Delayed hours on the BA Bus Tour waiting next to the diesel pumps at the Ludlow rest stop watch the worst thunder head drop inches of rain thing look pretty dismal to say the least. I guess you’d want the bad luck to happen first, well it did on the BA Bus tour, of course the bus breaking down did not break the Bas spirit. Northampton Brewery was our first stop ... seen to me as a savior and sanctuary from such a crappy beginning of the day. The 30+ BAs descended on that bar like it was last call and the staff worked quickly to get us our first pints. I opted for a pint of Daniel Shay’s Best Bitter and a pint of Hoover’s Porter to warm up on the side. The bitter was played very well and taste as close to style as I could tell, very drinkable. After the porter warmed up at tad it dispersed waves of chocolate and malt sweetness, very delicious. All of the beers tasted fresh and were cheaply price @ around $3.50 a pint ... cheap compared to Boston. I could see spending several hours at the bar going through the well rounded list of beer, they also showcased several guest brews.

First stop on the 2004 BA Bus Tour, the Northampton Brewery resides on the flipside of the Thorne’s Market. Though it’s been opened since 1987, the interior remains somewhat modern while being inviting though the exterior is an odd shaped cement building painted yellow with hop vines crawling about. Inside, the bar hugs the room, providing a view of the glassed brewhouse, while there’s plenty of drinking and dining space both on the ground floor, upstairs, new sunroom and outside deck that sits atop the building. They offer up to 8 rotating house beers on-tap, with 4 guest taps, some of which hail from its sister breweries (Portsmouth Brewery and Smuttynose in New Hampshire). Standouts were the Decadent Ale (a 10 plus percent Old Ale), Nonotuck India Pale Ale (a mild and floral IPA, and highly drinkable one at that) and Hoover’s Porter (with its smooth chocolate, coffee and smoky notes). The beers won’t knock beer geeks over with excitement, but all the offerings are solid, very appealing and highly drinkable. They also offer half- and full-pints and insanely cheap prices, with an average of $3.50 for a pint. Food-wise you’ll find a selection of standard brewpub fare, decent and fairly priced. Beer-battered Shrimp were delicious and the burgers and pilled sandwiches looked very appetizing. Service is friendly and prompt. The bar staff made eye contact and were on top of low pints. Definitely worth a visit, and ask one of the brewers for a tour, if they aren’t busy brewing.

Vibe- The indoor area is nice, but the outdoor deck is definitely the biggest draw. Staggered deck setup with three levels and it has a treefort fort feel being covered by a few trees.

Service- Service was solid.

Selection- Offerings limited to what the brewery produces, but considering the quality of the beer thats more than enough.

Food- The food is definitely high quality. The green mountain burger stands up there with the best burgers I've ever had.

Quality- The food was high quality, the vibe was great, and the beer was a big surprise. Was expecting the beers to be good, but a few were excellent including blue boots, mean grean, esb, and the pils. Also, its awesome that they had to these to go in cans or bombers. Definitely going back here.

Every time we head to Thorne's Marketplace we stop at Northampton Brewery. It's always hopping, and often they have live music on the weekend. We've had Celtic music serenade us at times.

The staff is friendly, they seat you fast, and the waitstaff is very helpful. The selection of beers is very good, both brewed there and guest beers on tap. The food is awesome, and there are even a few selections for vegetarians. Not quite as easy for vegans. They do some local sourcing.

If you're ever in the area, it's well worth a few hours to park, go to the brewery, then walk off the beers in the marketplace.

I was working in the area, and decided to stop by. The brewery is adjacent to downtown Northampton, and has a municipal parking garage literally across the street, where the first hour is free, and it's only .50 an hour after that.

It was early afternoon on a Friday in January, and there was a decent crowd at the bar, and in the booths downstairs when I arrived. When the hostess finally got to me (a sign said 'wait to be seated', but there was no one at the hostess station for at least 5 minutes, which was kind of awkward) I asked if I could sit upstairs, as it was a bit dim for my taste in the bar area. She was very accommodating, and led me upstairs to a comfortable booth with much better light.

My waitress was right there for my order, and I decided to try a flight of IPAs - they had 4 IPAs on the beer selection menu, which had at least 10 of Northampton's beers on tap available that day. A fight was four 6 ounce servings for $10, which is good price. When they arrived, the waitress give me a written chart listing all the beers ordered - a really nice touch for a beer geek! I enjoyed them all, but the 'Mean Green' DIPA was exceptional. I ordered a second flight to have while I ate, and once again I was not disappointed, with the Red Ale and 'Deckbier' standing out.

As for the meal, I had the chili, which was reasonably priced and tasty. I would have appreciated a few more chunks of beef, which was quite tender, in the chili, but overall I was satisfied. For dessert I had an apple crisp which was delicious, and went well with 'Pomona', the one lambic style beer I ordered in my second flight.

This brewery has lots of interesting events going on, including a beer & cheese night, movie nights, and even a painting class that includes beer. There is a deck that must be a fun hangout when the weather permits. If I lived in the area I would definitely be a regular here, and will certainly drop by the next time I am in the Northampton region.

Decent food, fresh brewed beers that usually aren't much to write home about. But the vibe is awesome. Great place to hang out and try some local beer. Definitely recommended for a quick lunch
