My wife and I recently took our honeymoon to Austin and New Braunfels. I was stoked to check out the beer scene in New Braunfels since it has a rep as a happenin' German kinda town. AJ's had the best reviews, so we hit it up a couple times.

The first night we went, I tried to strike up some beer convo with the bartender since we were the only bodies in there. He really didn't know anything about the beer styles or the breweries from which all the beers came, but he was really friendly and at least kept us entertained on a Sunday night. Their selection was large, but only for sheer quantity's sake.

We came back to sample some more local beers, grub on some pretty good apps, and play trivia on Wednesday night. Fun place, but if you want to geek out on beer, this is not your place.

Visited here on a Wednesday night, and was greeted by the bartender, mike, with the good news that a large selection of drafts are $2.75 on Wednesday's. Didn't include everything, but all of the local micros and several craft macros were included in the special. Place was fairly busy, maybe 15 other customers. No obvious theme to the place, several tv's with sports, but didn't really have the sportsbar vibe. Only one bartender, who was very good, but a little swamped. Nice tap selection, lots of locals, which is what I was after, being from out of town. Also some German beers, spaten, Paulaner, etc. I had the independence brown and a live oak hefe. Wife had the (512) pecan porter. All for $2.75 each. Chips and queso were also good.

Only complaint, all beers are served in a frozen pint glass. Had to let them warm considerably to be able to taste them. Even saw him serve another customer a Stella in a frozen pint glass.

I have become quite the frequent flyer at this establishment. For New Braunfels this place has a pretty darn good selection of beer. They have variety for any kind of beer drinker, IPA's, Stouts, Lagers, etc. They even have some of that pale, yellow, fizzy beverage that some people call "light beer" but I guess you have to have something that will please everyone.

Fun place to go, triva night on tuesday night is always a good time and you can go try to compete with the dominating Asstastic Buffalo's. I hear they are pretty tough. Always have good specials on food and beer including micro brewed beers from the wonderful state of Texas. Great place to go watch the game or just to go sit down and relax with nice tasty pint or two of brew. I also highly recomend the getting an order of waffle fries, they are pretty amazing.

This is a standard kind of sports bar. Some booths and tables up front as you walk in. The bar is towards the back. Tons of TV's everywhere, and very loud music. The feel of the place is just a typical sports bar.

The beer is pretty extensive. I did not count, but there are a lot of taps. More than that, there are a lot of good beers. Tons of Texas locals. A couple of Saint Arnold, at least three each of 512, Live Oak, and Independence. Other big micro offerings like Deschutes, Stone, and Dogfish Head. Some German imports as well, as would be expected in this town. The bottles selection follows the taps. Lots of US micros, German, Belgian, and British imports. Quality is good. No problems with what I had.

The service is something to be desired though. I showed up, the bartender looked at me, and then walked into another room without a word. I finally got served, with no character, and then they walked away again. I finished my beer and walked out.

I did not eat, but it seems like it is just typical pub grub. Burgers, wings, etc. Overall, they might have the best local beer selection in town, but almost everything else is below par. No service, no atmosphere, and there are better places to go for a good beer in town. Check it out for the beer selection, but don't expect anything else.
