This beer poured golden brown, with almost a three fingered head, average carbonation, and no lacings to observed. It had a fruit and malt aroma that dissapeared faster than the United States World Cup hops. It had a swirl of taste, like a mouthful of circus, it had bananas, wheat, orchard fruit, metal, and rice....it was heavy, no edge, and left a pleasent after taste.

500 ml bottle (1 pint 0.9 fl oz.) with date 09.09.2012 printed on the front label, so this beer is over a year old. I got this on sale at the local Binny's. My first encounter with this beer and this brewery. A Bavarian hefeweizen from Germany, not my favorite style to begin with, but I'm going in unbiased.

Poured into a Shock Top weizen glass.

A - Pours a coppery orange body with tons of bubbles floating topside. Head is about three fingers of huge fizzy off-white bubbles, audibly sizzling away into nothing.

S - Smell is nice: crisp, sweet, bready malts. Some yeasty funk. Bubblegum malt is in there, but it seems to have faded some, and that is fine by me. Some apple juice.

T - Taste is clearly past it's prime, but still good. Again, the malty bubblegum / cloves & spices have toned down a bit, which is fine by me, but they are still in there. Crisp carbonation. Sweet juicy apples. Champagne like yeast qualities. Some grapey wine like characteristics, which is interesting to note that this is imported by Magellan Wine Imports, Inc. Some coppery metallics on the finish.

M - Feel is crisp, coarse, and carbonated. Bready sweetness and juicy apples lingering on the palate.

Overall, I rather enjoyed it for a "Bavarian hefeweizen"; in a lot of ways it reminds me of some of the American adjunct lagers I've had that were imported from India, albeit with more bubblegum and clove spice. Easy drinking and worth a shot if you see it.

Found this bottle of interest at Hazel's in Boulder, CO. Who could walk by a bottle of German beer with pictures of pigs (one sporting a pearl necklace, nonetheless) on the label and not buy just one? German beers are always pretty spot on... predictable, yes, but always of good quality if nothing else.

Pours a murky caramel, amber-ish hue... Has a robust head with large bubbles that dissipates down to small unevenly spaced lacing bubbles through the beer. This is what I perceive as a very authentic hefe. If I am not mistaken, Ayinger's Brau-weisse and Pinkus' Ur-Hefe both are of a darker tone but at the same time not dunkel-weisse. Both are notably very true to style. Not a hazy gold. This gives me some faith and interest that this beer will be of good standard.

Smell is very delicate on this one. Getting an overlaying tone of very ripe banana, wet soil, maybe a little spicy yeast. Almost a delicate floral note but the smell is very fine. Wish there was a little more for the nose to enjoy.

Taste is pretty right on. It is very mellow and very controlled. There is a mineral presence to the beer which is pleasant. It comes it at the beginning with the gentle taste of toast wheat. It hangs through with the thresh of banana that churns into clove and cream and earthiness. All the tastes are very subtle and ride quickly but easily through the beer with non squashing the other. There is a great bread yeast that spikes the end and then a pleasant almost unnoticeable honey bread/floral sweetness that lingers on after the beer is down.

Mouthfeel is quite creamy. Pillowy. pretty right on. I would say this beer is... mildly refreshing with the body. A nice cool summer evening brew. But wouldn't do this on a scorcher of a day.

Overall, I would say this is a pretty authentic German hefe. It isn't the most outstanding I've had, but it is pretty good. It is just soooo subtle. Which is good and almost a bit bad. I think the creamy body and the subtleness are perfect together though. One almost needs to be with the other.

I would suggest this to someone who would want a true German hefe experience. Might even do it again someday. Also a good start up beer to bring someone who may you may want to get into German brews. Nothing crazy, nice and mellow.

Serving type: 500 ml bottle. “03 05 2013” is printed on the back label in barely readable print. I assume it is the best-by date.

Appearance: Poured into a weizen glass. The color is cloudy caramel. Two fingers of light, bubbly head settled very quickly for a hefe, leaving a bubbly lacing that is reminiscent of bath water. For whatever reason, the bottle immediately overflowed after I popped the cap. All I did was move it from the fridge to the counter. Weird.

Smell: Ripe banana, clove spice, apple, a little bit of bubblegum, customary wheat, and caramel.

Taste: The mouthfeel is just about spot on: full but delicate. The flavor mostly mirrors the smell, but the fruit flavors are more prominent than the spice. Banana, cloves, apple, a little pepper, wheat, and caramel. The spice does vie for prominence after the beer has warmed. Some toasted malt emerges late, too.

Drinkability: It is nothing spectacular, but it is a tasty, run-of-the-mill hefe.

This is a rather dark hefeweizen and it's too bad I have to mark points off for that...but I do. The hazel nut, copper poor (well, lighter than that) doesn't seem to 'summer' or Bavarian to me...oh well

Smells like one, though, for the most part. Banana, a bit ripe. Some esters and light biscuit.

The banana and clove are up front and duking it out. Just below that the sweet bread and caramel linger. A steady dose of lemon and orange zest permeate.

Not your typical hefeweizen, but this is a good beer. Nice feel and great drinkability to it. I think it was $4 at the store; good pick up

This was a surprise buy for me. Very simple, and very surprising.

The beer pours a deep, cloudy amber, darker than any Hefe I've seen, with a huge amount of carbonation and fluffy almond head. Great retention.

The smell isn't strong, but you get hints of cloves and wheat, as well as something fruitier I couldn't put my finger on. Schweinsbrau has a full and simple taste as well. If you get that head, it seriously feels like something pleasant floating down your throat on a fluffy cloud. There's a caramel, clove and banana sweetness that stays evenly from start to finish, with a subtle hop bitterness at the end. Nothing bitter lingers.

It's not a complex beer, but I feel like this is what a hefeweizen should taste like if it's brewed right. At 5.2% ABV, it's a great session beer as well. I may have rated it high, but I think you deserve points for knowing a beer's style and doing it right.

A- Dark, golden orange with a slight haze and a large, fluffy head. Gets much cloudier with the yeast pour. It's a little darker than your typical hefe, but it's very attractive.

S- Strong ripe banana notes are complemented by a touch of wheat. Also some light grassy and vegetal notes to add a little sharpness.

T- Light clove sweetness upfront with a nice caramel backing. Wheat comes through with a crisp twang. Finish is fairly dry with a cereal character and just a touch of grassy bitterness.

M- Smooth medium body with a decent level of carbonation (although it may actually be a little low for the style).

Overall a very good hefeweizen. It seems a little heavier and maltier than your typical hefe but by no means are these bad qualities; they're just a little different. Still has a great hefe flavor and is a good choice for a warm spring day. Recommended for fans of the style.

The liquid is a bit cloudy, the colour is pale brown. The low head is yellowish.

The smell got notes of banana candy, earth, wheat sourness and green bananas.

The taste got sweet notes of fruit candy. Some dry mineral flavours. Roasted hints (toffee?). The aftertaste is balanced with some yeasty flavours, hints of phenols (old-fashioned soap), and some bitterness. Green bananas in the finish.

The carbonation is strong, the large bubbles tickles the tongue. The liquid is mid-smooth.

I liked this one; more complex and rawer than the average hefeweizen.
