Smoke, Toast, Hay, Crisp

Lavery Brewing uses German beechwood smoked malt for authenticity, producing an even degree of smoke from the first sip through the long lingering finish. As crisp as you ever want a lager to be, plus subtle hopping to let the smoke dance around on the palate. In short, the brewers hit the right level of smokiness while keeping it quaffable. If I had to describe this beer in one word, I’d choose authentic.

Bottle purchased at AJ's Beer Warehouse in Henrietta, NY.

This one pours a light clear yellow, with a pretty big 1.5 inch head, and lots of lacing.

Smells like smoked sausage and bacon, honey, and grassiness.

This is very, very smokey- luckily the smokiness tastes nice, because it kind of buries the base beer (is it a Helles?). I do get some honey sweetness, and a little bit of grassiness, but it's just warm, sweet, and earthy smoke, like a nice sweet sausage. This would taste great around a campfire

This is light bodied, and very drinkable, with a good level of carbonation.

I'm becoming obsessed with smoked beers, and this is really nice one.

Paid the premium on this one $3.50 for the bottle. Into a standard pint.

A - Looks like any other lager bright yellow with a 1/4 inch of head which makes for a good attractive lace ring.
S - So good meaty like smoke emanating from my glass. Repeated sniffs find no skunked malt smells so its all good here.
T - A nice bit of meaty smoke followed by smooth lager taste and no skunky body. Tasty.
M - Light to medium body easy to quaff back.

A good smoked beer nothing too extreme or skunky. I would get it again!

Bottle > Mason Pint

A - Mostly clear yellow with a finger of fizzy bubbly white head, thick lacing
S - Lighter smoke, some lager yeast, bread
T - There's smoke here, but its not as major as I had hoped, basic kind of tasting later in almost every other aspect though.
M - Clean and smooth, medium light feel
O - Its not bad, but a far cry from excellent smoked beers out there.

Bottle at 48 degrees into shaker (Bottle recommends 45 – 50 degrees)
Aroma of very light smoke initially which is quickly replaced by the basic lager smell.
Head average (Four cm, aggressive pour), white, frothy, diminishing to three mm ring and layer
Lacing fair – broken rings of tiny to medium bubbles
Body straw, clear, sediment in bottle
Flavor starts with some light smoke which quickly disappears. From then on it’s just another mediocre lager, but at least it’s not an AAL. It uses imported smoked malt from Bamberg but it doesn’t really help. No alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate light, watery, lively carbonation
