Lavery Imperial Red AleLavery Imperial Red Ale

Brewed by:
Lavery Brewing Company
Pennsylvania, United States

Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
BIG. HOPPY. RED. Irish beer gone incognito! Our IRA has a beautiful burnt orange/red color with the unmistakable aroma and flavor of American hops. This beer is brewed to be dry with full flavor of Nugget, Apollo & Cascade dry hopping. With over two pounds of hops per barrel (that's a lot) its like no beer ever brewed in Erie.

Appearance: Dark red and hazy like a wheat beer. Average head with lots of lacing.

Smell: Not much of anything but dryness.

Taste: A very very dry Irish red.

Mouthfeel: Again dryness is the dominant feature of this beer.

Overall: I waited a long time to finally try a beer from this brewery and I was slightly dissapointed. I might have to drive to Erie and try this at the source.

Nabbed a bottle of this for 5 bucks at the local House of 1,000 beers.

A - Looks like a deeper, darker, hazier version of your typical amber (nice) with a rocky 1/2 inch of mocha colored head.

S - From the bottle I could tell it has a decent amount of citrus hops. In the glass confirmed with a nice bit of caramel and biscuit malts.

T - Quite good and very bittering yet balanced. Again I get the citrus hops mid palate and some caramel like malts finishing the sip with some bread. Not bad.

M - Drinks like an IPA with a medium to light body.

Overall I guess I knocked some points off since I expected an imperial strength ABV as well. It's good for an almost IPA like amber.

First beer I've formally reviewed in quite some time. I feel like I should do something to help a start-up in the state.

Bomber into imp. pint.

Nice looking beer, good tall head that sticks around for the duration. Hazy amber red color.

Smell is a combo of piney hops and sweet caramel. Not really overwhelming aroma.

Taste brings it home. Hops tip the balance with the maltiness. Its an amber ale with just a bit more.

Mouthfeel is creamy and nicely drying on the finish.

I would definitely drink more of this beer. Put it in 12oz bottles (or even better cans!). Glad I took a chance on this new brewery, now to find it on tap.
