Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Tempest is the first release from our seven barrel series. A smooth brown porter, Tempest features healthy portions of dark crystal, chocolate, and brown malts, coupled with the addition of coffee beans to the mash and cold-steeped coffee during conditioning for a rich smooth balance of malt and coffee.

We are pleased to have partnered with Bard Coffee to produce this beer. Bard provided the wonderful Nicaragua Don Rodolfo Dark coffee with hints of bittersweet coffee and smoke.

In my pint glass this beer was a very dark brown, almost black, color. There was a tiny tan head, and no lace.

A roasted malt aroma. Some coffee and chocolate.

The taste was more exciting than the aroma. Mostly coffee, some chocolate, more sweet than bitter. Burnt toast.

A lighter beer, very enjoyable.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass . Much thanks to Toasterchef.

A solid classic opaque walnut brown body, with a thick whipped top that hangs on, off white but a good single crown that hangs nicely. Lots of creamy retention sticking around, leaving a good solid puck while drinking.

Nose has a good milky coffee sense, and light roast characters with the malt backbone. Whispy airy simple drip coffee, with creamer. Good, solid, simple, delicious smelling.

Palate hits with classic creamed coffee morning crispness. Light roast with a spicy quality to the finish, with a minor carbon quality. Slightly milky with a bit of depth to it. Good whipped milk top feeling in the palate also.

Overall simple solid and good, could have again.

Poured into a tulip. This one pours a cola brown with a small cap of beige head.

Nice aroma with some bready malts and nuts in the aroma. Nice mellow coffee aroma. Balanced roasted coffee on the pallet with hazelnut tones and some German bread malts.

The body is a bit light with good carbonation. Overall this one is enjoyable. Easy to drink with good flavors.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic, the beer is a dark, vibrant, ruby-highlighted, dark brown color with a healthy amount of carbonation bubbling along the glass and a thin, filmy, off-white surface coating of head. Aromas of bitter and dark roasted coffee beans, with a hint of dark, bitter chocolate. Seriously smells like a fresh, slow roast. Flavors of roast fill your tastebuds initially, followed by a bitterness that is smooth and strong. There are hints of bitter baker's chocolate in the undertones, and a touch of creaminess that brings some levity to the dark, robust flavors. Coffee grinds and roast in the aftertaste, riding a thin, clean body. Clean, smooth finish, with a slight roasty linger. Solid brew, very heavy on the coffee throughout.

22 oz. bottle poured into a .4L Weizen/Pilsner glass.

Appearance: Light to medium brown in color with little initial head, about 1/4”, which quickly recedes to a cap, nice lacing.

Smell: Big roasted malt with coffee, nice on the nose.

Taste: Roasted malt as advertised and as expected. Nice coffee flavors and overall “lightness” to style, meaning as a porter I expect less depth and richness than I would from a stout. Really not much beyond the roasted malt and coffee flavors, no real chocolate flavors to speak of.

Mouthfeel: Smooth but somehow thinner than expected even for a porter, not much depth of body.

Overall: I really like what this brewery has offered to-date, I thought Polaris was exceptional and I think Ursa Minor is excellent; however, this offering does nothing to stand out. It’s a fairly run of the mill porter that lacks both depth of flavor and body. Not a bad beerby any means, highly drinkable, just an average to slightly above average beer.

22oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Pours a clear, deep ruby red with shades of dark purple. Creamy, sandy head diminishes quickly. Delicate strands of lacing form broken rings.

S: Malt aromas of cola, brown molasses, and toffee. Freshly roasted coffee beans and freshly brewed coffee with cream and sugar. Mild acidity. Fleeting cocoa powder. Fruity esters are vague and only barely apparent. Slight smoke and a very light floral note probably comes from the coffee.

T: Clod, stale, day old coffee opens. Roasted coffee beans come through with a better coffee experience mid-palate. Freshly roasted coffee beans with light floral notes, mild smoke, and a nice earthiness. Very acidic in the coffee way. Thin malt backbone of cola and molasses underneath. Ghost-like cocoa. Drying finish of cold, stale, acidic coffee.

M: On the thinner side of medium bodied. Creamy. Mild prickling carbonation doesn't lift the body as much as it should, but it serves its purpose.

O: A very average coffee porter. Interesting decision to go with a brown porter as the base beer. It really isn't big enough to handle the coffee addition thrown at it, and the beer suffers. Old, stale coffee tastes and too much acidity run amok on top of a very nondescript base beer.
