Appearance: Served up a very dark brown, near black body with nearly an inch of dark, dusty, tan foam.

Smell: Roasted, toasted grain with some ineffusive, uninspired chocolate. Scant dark fruitiness. Backdrop of basic peppermint.

Taste: Roasted malts, low-grade chocolate with very, very small hint of vanilla. A slight, tangy dark fruitiness. Provides for a moderate zing of peppermint. A drying, roasted graininess on the finish with some lasting mint in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Fluffy carbonation.

Overall: Nope, not digging it. I was open to the prospect of peppermint, but I wasn’t too taken by the underlying beer.

This beer is completely, utterly black. Its head is light brown, and leaves a nice lace. The aroma has roasted grain notes and a bit of malt, but also sweet peppermint. I didn't think that the mint was forward at first, but after several sips, you can't avoid it. Mint is present in the taste as well, constantly under the surface. It gives the beer a spice that is unusual and interesting. Different. Also present are chocolate notes, a little booze, and a serious spice finish. Good.

Ratings are correct below, but I changed some marks above to make the final rating as close as possible with Beer Advocate's "revamped" system. The 4.07 overall rating is accurate.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas pint glass
From: Bine & Vine in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $5.99
Purchased: Feb. 16, 2015
Consumed: March 24, 2015
Misc.: Bottled on Dec. 5, 2014

Poured almost a pitch black color with 2-to-3 fingers of tan, rocky head, which settled nicely on the top. Minimal spotty lacing. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled a nice whiff of mint chocolate chip right up front, rather potent. Also got chocolate, chocolate syrup, peppermint, caramel, toffee and spicy cocoa powder. Very nice. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted pretty close to the nose, although with less mint. Got cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, roasty nuts, mint chocolate chip and peppermint late, and some roasty, smoky fire. Grew on me as it went down. Not tasting the 8.00 pct. ABV. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Slick-to-sticky texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, slightly bitter finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Really liked this beer, although I’m a sucker for anything mint chocolate. Would have it again for sure and got a great deal for a sale price of $5.99. (Overall - 4.00)

The mint is really powerful. It's not something that you will have to question the flavor you can't quite pick up. This is not something I would drink more than one of. I feel like it would be great with some vanilla ice cream. To me, the smell is the best part of this beer. The rest aren't bad but it smells amazing!

Nothing but crazy, this beer. The mint is quite powerful, but clean and tasty. It does taste like chocolate and mint, seriously. I think you wouldn't drink a lot of it, but that zingy flavor gets to you. It's black all right, and a credible Stout. On tap at 57 Degrees in San Diego.
