A - Pour medium dark honey, not much head, but tons of lace.

S - Dense, sweet, spicy pumpkin pie. It's almost like eating with your nose.

T - Big pumpkin, but even bigger spices. Personally, I would have like to get more of the pumpkin flavor and tone down the spices, just a little, but that is my preference. Pretty tasty.

M - Creamy, medium to heavy body, good carbonation, good balance and a nice clean finish.

D - Not a session, but no pumpkins really are. Very nice example of the style.

Taste is pumpkin pulp, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and toasted malt. Sweet for the style and it hits all the expected notes. Enough to keep me interested enough to try another offering from the brewery.

I pour this rather pricy bomber into a globe glass and share it with a friend. The pour is a hazy brown with some bright pumpkin highlights. Offers a decent cap which does linger fairly well. This year's offering, the Witches Hair, comes in at 8.8%, 2011 Edition on the bottle.

The nose is subdued in a sense and not the pumpkin pie they had last year. And that's a good thing I must say. Still offering notes of pumpkin though more yam and a full showing of fall spice and potpourri. Touch of earthy hops reveal themselves with a bit of agitation and alcohol is mildly evident.

Taste brings it back with a flash of sweetness and is followed by a lingering of spice. Still a bit thin in the delivery the beer offers an odd confluence of factors. Pumpkin, yam, alcohol, allspice and cinnamon, perhaps some nutmeg. Yet last years overwhelming spice is absent, tasting more like beer than pie. Hmmm. But then not so much really....

On tap at the brewery.

Pours a auburn color in the glass with a very thin head that fades quickly to just a lacing around the glass.

smell- pumpkin pie is evident, pumpkin mash cinnamon, nutmeg and other holiday spices.

Taste- carbonation hits up front but the taste settles in to follow the nose. Lots of pumpkin flavor, cinnamon and nutmeg. Very nicely done and my favorite brew from this brewery.

Overall- this brew is very well balanced the flavors ride together nicelyand remains on top 3 pumpkin of beers all time. Very drinkable at 9% abv.

I had this draft when visiting San Diego about 1 month ago at Barleymash and honestly didn't know it was a pumpkin ale (at the time)... now knowing the flavors make sense... one of better pumpkin beers, probably best one I've had... I'm not really a fan of pumpkin beers, but this one was drinkable and would get again. Tasted the cloves and vanilla mostly, which I like, so was overall pretty good.

You get a lot of pumpkin/ yam on the nose, with a touch of molasses. It goes down smooth. It's about as close to the flavor of good gourd as I've found

Thanksgiving will never be the same without this ... seriously, pumpkin? I've always been skeptical, but not with this!!!! Huge fan, stock up, and serve with turkey and pumpkin pie (I'm not kidding.)

On-tap at Strong Ale

A: The pour is a murky dark amber-orange color with a slightly off-white head.

S: An intensely sweet nose to this beer, almost like melted candy. All spice, clove, and cinnamon are here as well, but there's a bit of a "turned" nature to them. Almost like the spice container was left out in the Santee sun for about 10 years.

T: Mostly pie spices on the flavor, and they are a bit overwhelming. It's also somewhat chalky and bitter. There's only a mild malty sweetness, and not really any pumpkin flavor.

M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation and a pretty dry finish.

D: This recipe needs some work. Not a very good pumpkin or spiced or whatever you want to call it style beer.

I can't top my review last year of this stuff in the bottles, but I had to try it on tap at Sea Rocket in San Diego. Red-orange amber in the tulip glass. Head becomes a bathtub ring, but pleasantly carbonated on the tongue for a while.

Sweet and hugely flavored. Makes me think of those peculiar candy fruit things you see in the Mexican bakeries. Winey nose with ginger and cloves. Seriously candied sweet potato flavor. Then there's the pumpkin pie spices. But overall it tastes like your grandma's yams, though missing the marshmallows.

So sweet and spicy, I would normally hate this kind of stuff, but it's a terrific blast of flavors. Just think of it as dessert. Maybe this is the perfect beer float with vanilla ice cream.
