Very Good
Velvet GloveVelvet Glove
Notes: You know the expression, "A Velvet Glove and an Iron Fist"? It was coined to refer to a regime that used a soft exterior to hide its punishingly unforgiving nature. This seems an apt description for our Velvet Glove. Its placid appearance and unparalleled smoothness hide the truth; this is one fiendishly strong stout. Rich, chocolaty espresso dominates the flavor profile, with a velvety smooth texture that will haunt your senses.

October 3rd, 2015 - Finally, a winner from Iron Fist. The Velvet Glove is a real rebound after the other tasters today, but this wine dark brew has a lovely smell with smoke, dripping with a subtle sweetness and completely compelling even coming from a taster glass. The flavor is also quite toothsome, with just the perfect level of stickiness and a fantastic blend of sweet and smoky tastes.

Pours an effervescent chestnut/mahogany with 2 fingers of tan head. Great lacing & head retention

S: Iron, raisin, carob

T: Follows the nose, some dryness, slight smokeyness up front. A littl smokeyness, vanilla, a touch of char & a kiss of booze warmth. Finishes smokey, charry , dry with a little roastyness

MF: Medium body/thick, very creamy,

One of the best of this style with an Oatmeal slant I have had in a long time. Well done Iron Fist!

Very chewy, sweet, hoppy undertone, not complex, high alcohol content is barely noticeable. Bought 22 oz bottle at an international supermarket which sells overstock beers for $1.99. WILL go back tomorrow and pick up a few more, maybe more than a few ;D

12.68 oz bottle served at 43 degrees. later warmed to ~55-60 degrees fahrenheit.

Look: Pours Jet Black with a Dense 1" caramel head. The Head retention was phenomenal as it never went away during my session of 30 minutes +. At its smallest 1/4". Creamy and dense Lacing.

Smell: Sweet aromas, roasty, toasty, and followed by dark chocolate and toffee scents. Smells of Dank, heavy, bitter dark chocolate. When warmed the scent of alcohol was present, but still subtle.

Taste: Nose is sweet and chocolaty, palates into a toffee and dark chocolate taste, followed by the bitter raw cocoa flavor. The Finish of raw cocoa is more present as the beer warms and opens up to you. Its a shy stout that needs to warm up for the best of all its flavors. Chocolate Dominates the flavor, but has an even and welcoming toffee and roast texture and flavor. Thick viscosity stout, and creamy. The Head adds tremendously to its overall flavor. I can't help but add that i felt it was somewhat chalky in the after taste as it warmed. Very Rich flavors.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation, Smooth on the palate, very drinkable at 9%. Alcohol presents itself as the stout warms. Thick viscosity as previously mentioned, but not overpowering. Warm, inviting, creamy, gorgeous stout poured into a goblet.

Round 1-Value

Iron Fist @ $11.99 with 9.0% ABV

Round 2-Aroma

Iron Fist: Unsweetened chocolate and espresso notes

Round 3-Flavor

Iron Fist: Dark chocolate covered espresso beans

Round 4-Finish

Iron Fist : 1:30-2:00 minutes

Round 5-Packaging

Iron Fist: Champagne bottle (25.4 ounces) with nice Communist-esque artwork

Results

Iron Fist came in at $11.99 with a 9% ABV, which is a little pricey for 25.4 ounces of beer. With that being said, the beer is so rich, complex, and memorable that the price becomes an after thought. I treated this craft beer like a bottle of wine and sipped it all night. Velvet Glove is a quality Imperial Stout.

I was highly impressed--from the thick, generous head to the trailing warm alochol aftertaste, through the smooth-drinking middle.

L - Tan head, opaque brown to black.
S - There was lots more in the taste and feel than the smell of this one for me, but I certainly smelled coffee and chocolate.
T - Alcoholic Hershey's syrup was my first impression--in a good way: for its luscious chocolate and its smoothness backed by booze. Definitely coffee taste in there. maybe raisin or licorice for me.
F - It's not usually the mouthfeel that stands out for me, but this time it did. Noticeably smooth, especially out of a bottle--not to the level of nitro, but very close. A little more syrupy than creamy, but in a good way. A very good way.
O - The name is very apt. It is smooth and also packs a punch. I was impressed.
