Best place to get a pint and an excellent meal. Staff is amazing and Sunday brunch is best in town. The Sausage and Biscuits is second to none. Highly Recommend.

What can be said about Mikro that hasn't already been said. Basically nothing. Owner Mike has done a fantastic job; the staff, in general has been the same group of individuals for a few years (which I suspect means it is a good place to work), and the craft brew selection is amazing. Sometimes I wish they had a bit more of a regular beer menu, i.e. a few staples that would always be on the menu; but on the other hand, I love just walking in and being surprised. As for the food, it is simple, relatively refined and tasty.

While searching for some dinner a friend and I stumbled onto this gem! We were in Connecticut for work and found this place to be super packed and brimming with customers. Happens they were having an Allagash tap take-over with nearly 15 taps of Allagash and a few more with variuos others from the area. People were very friendly and bartenders and staff knew their beers. Most of the time they have a local Berkshire Brewing Co. Coffee House Porter on nitro tap but aparantly they had just run out so had an Old Rasputin nitro. Very nice establishment and hope to return to the area for work to re-visit this place . Great Time.

Read about this place on Beer Advocate and had to try it. Nice looking joint that oozes fresh beer. Walked in, not crowded and found a seat at the bar. They were running a special event, the 8 beers of Hanaukah. I'm not Jewish, but, when in Tel aviv...selected the very non-kosher Bahn Mi sandwich. Delicious. Asked the bar keep for a recommend draft and he suggested the He'brew Hop Manna. Perfect foil to the Bahn Mi. Would have loved to have sampled more but had to have a clear head. Wish that I had a bar like this near where I live. I would be there all the time. Great little spot in need of multiple revisits. Try it, you'll like it.

always packed and for good reason. food is fantastic.
its a treat for us to go here. we go a few times a year. coast 100 bucks every time we go. which is why its a nice treat.
my only negative is community seating. its your option to or not to. but as a service industry worker myself i feel that it greatly takes away from the romanticism of going out. but again if they did not offer it packed would be an understatement. Don't get me wrong, if you have never been you need to go! in fact you need to go a lot till you try every last bit of food on the menu!

Mikro has an impressive craft beer selection for a place that is in a strip mall. Approximately 20 taps that constantly rotate and are featured on a large chalkboard. Price range was on par with most other craft beer pours ($5 and up depending on what you order). Went for Sunday brunch. The food was absolutely delicious and paired well with the beers on tap. This establishment is small and filled up quickly (folks were waiting for a table within 30 minutes of opening). Overall, I would recommend giving Mikro a try. I plan to return.

I went here for my 21st birthday yesterday and I couldn't be more glad that I did so because this is just a great place to hang out and drink some quality beer with some friends and maybe something fried to nosh on once you're a few beers deep. Its not the type of place where drunks congregate which i liked a lot; its a small place but its a very nice little hideaway from the hustle and bustle of Whitney Ave. outside which one would forget was there from the atmosphere of the place.

I love that they change the beer on "the board" everyday even if its only by 1 or 2 beers. The board is a giant chalk board on the back wall and it lists the 2 dozen microbrews that they have on draft that night and usually one is a cask.

I certainly will be dubbing this place my watering hole especially since its only a 15 minute drive for me :)

I live a couple miles from this place and only discovered it a few months ago. This place and The Cask Republic in New Haven are my favorite places to go for excellent beer and atmosphere. Great beer selection. All microbrews. They rotate new beers in all of the time so it is a treat to see what they have each time I go in. Plenty on tap and in the bottle. The food is also excellent. Beers are reasonably priced. The food is a bit expensive, but well worth it. I recommend starting out with a flight and move on from there.

We have eaten a few times here now. I must say I am impressed with the food here. You get some interesting twists on the food here. Deviled eggs are made with chipotle to give them just a bit of a bite. Last time there I had the pork chops that among the other items on it were shaved brussel sprouts. My wife liked the cornmeal waffle that was served with her chicken. Unusual, but it all works. And the beer selection is just superb. I believe they have 18 taps of constantly rotating beers. This place’s only drawback is that it is tiny. Get there early if you want dinner.

A - Cool atmosphere of the place, far from a dive and it almost seems more bistro like than bar like. Weekday nights at the table are intimate, but weekend nights are crowded and busy. Cool people all around, though.

Q - Yup, excellent quality everywhere, no real complaints.

Serv. - Exceptional service every time I've been there (twice now). Sit at the bar, get service; stand waiting for a table, get service; sit at a table, get exceptional, friendly, and knowledgeable service. Great team. Helped me to get the beer on cask which was amazing.

Sel. - Pretty darn good selection for Hamden, probably rivals that of New Haven, too. Strong bottle list of the usual suspects and a great tap list, plus the night I was there, there was a beer on cask. Had a Clipper City Loose Cannon (Cask) and a BBC Imperial Stout on Nitro.

F - Food was very "artisanal", typically an interesting twist on a classic food item. Everything perfectly done, though. The cheese platter was dinky but tasty. Reuben was exceptional. Sometimes I wish I could have fries instead of potato chips, though.

Price - Yeah, it gets a little pricey, but mostly for food. Beer is pretty normal valued, though.

My first visit to Mikro and it seemed pretty true to the previous reviews. Overall a good experience. First note, parking on a Friday afternoon/evening is a bit of a bitch. It's a small shopping plaza with a very few spaces for a number of small businesses. We found our way around the back of the building. Then, arriving at 5:20 PM, we still had to put our name on the waiting list for one of the dozen or so small tables in this one-room tiny establishment. It does make for a "happening" sort of crowd-feel but obviously it can be a detraction. There was a little room at the bar and service was friendly and prompt for such a busy place. We were seated about as promised and the menu is limited but decent with fish n' chips, a venison sausage dish, some sort of vegetable pot pie, and a few other interesting choices as well as a featured special of a rib eye steak. The venison I had was very good, I'd have it again and I recommend a little mustard on the side. The fish n' chips got a very good review and the steak was less exciting with perhaps a bit too much extra flavoring pumped into it. But all was good and portions weren't ridiculously small, just not large. Enough I'd say. We had the special Beer-amisu desert which was good but not "beery" in any way. Our server was a young lady who claimed to know all the beers on the extensive tap list and she convinced me that was no lie. She was helpful and knowledgeable. Very impressive, and friendly too. All the beers I had seemed plenty fresh and tasty. They were out of a couple from the beer board but nothing unusual. I enjoyed a Great Divide Titan, a Southern Tier 2XIPA, a Clipper City Black IPA and an Ommegang Witte. No complaints. The atmosphere is obviously close quarters which with less of a crowd should be fine, but at crunch time is a little bit of a put off. They handled things pretty well though. They do have a 2-hour policy on the tables which ultimately is probably a good policy but it can also be a little awkward as they roust you from your seats at the appointed time to make room, even if nobody else is necessarily waiting for your table. We got up and stood at the bar "rail" for another beer while we watched our table sit empty for at least 5+ minutes, though another group eventually came along. Decor is simple, clean cut, a combo of rough cut wood and new age moderne with simple beer items on the walls (framed advertisements and banners, etc.). As a beer geek, I liked it fine but I probably would avoid another weekend dinner engagement there. Prices weren't horrible, just differentiating themselves from your corner bar. Good to see it thriving.

Been to this one a couple times, definetly has been improving since opening. I was a little disappointed the first couple times I went in....mainly because of a mediocre (for a craft beer bar) tap list, the relatively high cost of the food, and the lack of a happy hour specials....

I've gotten over most of that (though I would def. frequent the place more often if they had a Prime 16 like happy hour) and learned to love the craft beer bar that's 5 minutes from Quinnipiac

A: really nice, laid back feel, the curtains shield the door opening upon entry makes a lot of difference, very homey- barn like feel as others have mentioned, one room that's a little small, but doesn't usually fill beyond capacity....

Q: this has improved significantly over the last couple months (props to Jonathan, who I believe used to man the beer helm at Prime 16) and is consistently solid and usually provides me with at least one nice surprise...not quite up to Prime 16's consistency yet, but getting there... (one small quibble-- almost always have 1-2 selections from Calvary-- whose beer is only average at best?)

S: most of the staff is fairly well versed and friendly with a couple truly outstanding staff members...owner, Mike, can almost always be spotted chatting with customers as well

F: really good, but a bit on the pricey side considering the size of the servings

V: with no real happy hour (maybe a $1 off on their $5 beers from 4-6?) and food that leans pricey, this is the principal reason I only frequent here a time or two a month

Prime 16 is still my favorite beer bar in the area (though Cask Republic is often tempting as well), Mikro is a great addition to the area's scene and the Hamden location is super convenient for all us Quinnipiac Grad students

This place opened up 10 minutes down the road from my childhood house. Figured any place that could get my Dad excited about "some dark beer called Imperial Stout Trooper" was worth checking out.

Pretty sure it used to be a non-descript bar called Jackrabbit Slims mostly catering to a Quinnipiac crowd, but Mikro is anything but unmemorable. The first thing that comes to mind upon entering is a friendly ski lodge, albeit one with fantastic beer taps. 18 on tap, usually a few from New England Brewing Co. down the road, with mostly a Northeast focus (Allagash, BBC, Weyerbacher, Smuttynose, etc.), but also a few West Coast stalwarts for good measure. Pretty extensive bottle list too, all reasonably priced, and flights of four, 4oz pours are nine bucks. They seem to go through kegs pretty quickly, unsurprising because the place is usually packed.

Food consists of a variety of higher end small plates, poutine, mussels & fries, salads, etc., as well as larger entrees and flatbreads. The flatbread with yukon gold potatoes, mozz, and various herbs was completely delicious, as was the chipotle chicken flatbread, and our chopped salad. It's higher end bar food, but reasonably priced, and not obnoxiously fancified.

But maybe most impressive was the knowledge of the servers on the topic of suds. Our waiter was familiar with every brew on the menu, more than willing to talk shop, and was able to recommend brews based upon the food being ordered and the diners' past experiences with beers they liked. Every one of the servers seemed to have similar knowledge, and patience.

Warm environment, great food, excellent taps and service. I'd return in a heartbeat.

Mikro is a small room, with the bar area taking one half the space, with tables fitting in behind the bar. It was a little cramped on a Friday night, but I was able to find a spot at the bar.

The draft list was on a board in front of me, with a wide range of styles covered. Mostly local, New England brews were on tap when I went, with a couple offerings each from Berkshire and Sebago. Price and ABV were listed for all the beers. I decided to go with a Blue Point Oatmeal Stout.

The food menu was small, with a good selection of small and medium sized plates. I ordered a cheese plate that included a cheddar with onions and chives, a smoked blue cheese and a smoked Gouda. All were tasty, but I wish the plate include more of the cranberry-walnut bread. I also had a small plate of mussels steamed in white ale, with an orange in the broth as well as some pepper-spice. The portion for the "small" mussels plate was very generous.

Service was very impressive. Even though it was a busy night, my bartender was attentive, talkative, and even brought me an extra plate of toast for my mussels! The quality of the food was excellent, especially for the price. I think my two plates totaled $16. The beer list was great, and the tap list changes frequently (two or three taps were changed while I was there.) This might be the best beer bar in CT!

Atmosphere: Mikro is a bit larger than it first looks. They have the place packed with as many chairs as they can manage, much to the chagrin of whoever has to sit near the door. It's a tall room, too, so the sound doesn't bounce off the ceiling and make it insanely loud. You don't have to yell across the table to talk to anyone. There is a big board of their beer offerings with ABV and how much they cost a glass, which is a huge +.

Food: The food is very good, their regular offerings are pretty much perfected and their specials usually have some flair to draw you in. The beer is good as well; their lines aren't frozen to say the least. The selection of food is a bit limited, but enough to have a few options in mind.

Service: Very personable, we were greeted as soon as we walked in, and we hung out at the bar while we waited for a table. The table we were going to have still had previous diners on it, and it seemed the staff was hesitant to usher them off the table despite the fact they had paid for their check some time back. The waiter was knowledgeable on food and he knew what "kicked" beers were being replaced with and their cost per glass even though it wasn't written on the board yet.

Selection: Their beer selection on this particular night was very seasonal, but with some options. A lot of darker beers and IPAs. They have an interesting bottles selection too, and their 22 oz. offerings aren't overpriced at all. With 18 beers on tap, you will find something you like. I didn't notice how many taps were taken up by national companies. They also offer flyers - dark and light -if you want a little of everything.

Value: The food is nicely priced, but watch out for the higher ABV beers. The night I wet they had a Yeti on tap, which weighed in at 8+ ABV. It was also $8. The beer came in a very small glass, smaller than the short glasses you would get at a place like Prime 16. It looked the sized for 4 shot glasses.

I went here for the first time a few weeks ago. Its nice to see anything sprout up around here and compete with the few mainstays of the CT beer scene. This "anything", however, has the potential to become one of my favorite joints around here!

Great beer-centric atmosphere. Dim lighting, tall ceiling, "bier hall-ish" community table in the center. My server was on point, friendly, and beer-smart to boot.

The beer selection is good, with an impressive bottle list. The taps weren't anything much apart from other comparable CT locations. Id like to see more special/unique stuff come through. I was happy to see Oxford CT's own Calvary brewing on tap! Beer prices appear to sporadically range from reasonable to high. Like another reviewer stated... $7 for a Rastafar-rye? Nah, no thanks. Yet on the same bill, my DFH Pala Santo was WAY cheaper than I expected!

The food is excellent and far exceeds pub standards. The menu consists of varying sizes of plates along with full entrées. Sort of like a tapas place with less pork and plantains. The items I had were fresh and tasty as hell. The food is a good value at Mikro, you will surely enjoy.

I will return!

Went to Mikro on Friday, November 19th with my wife. We were very pleased. The beer selection is very good, and the beers we had were all fresh. The food was exceptional for bar food. In fact, it was very good even if this were not a bar. My wife had a half a chicken (it is a small bird so it is actually a reasonably sized portion - not too big) with white beans. I had the wild salmon and pearl barley with mushrooms. The salmon had a glazed top which had almost turned to shellac - very different and not overcooked. The pearl barley and mushrooms was very savory. My wife loved her chicken and the white beans were cooked to perfection - again not overcooked.

It was a cold and gusty evening, and we were seated right next to the door. I now understand the function of those heavy curtains over the doorway. They prevented us feeling the chill as people came and went. My wife, who is normally quite sensitive to cold, had no problem sitting there.

The place was full but not over crowded when we were there. The noise level was moderately high, but we were still able to hold a conversation. The service was attentive but not overbearing. Given that the place was hopping, I has pleasantly surprised.

Thanks to the memorable food and beer I am sure we will be back.

Stopped in for some food and beer 11/20/10. Upon walking in through the door, there's an interesting cloth curtain that keeps the cold breeze down for the patrons near the door. It is dimly lit to promote an intimate atmosphere and is actually quite inviting. The music is a good mix of stuff that isn't the same stuff you hear at every bar and it is at a lower level so you can have a conversation with the person without having to scream into their ear. It is a small bar with about 8 tables or so and another bar in the middle that separates the seating area from the rest of the bar. It is a good use of the space. Also excellent was the ring on a string game, I can't wait to play that when the bar isn't so crowded...

The beer selection was excellent - they had some local stuff by Cavalry Brewing, some stuff by Captain Lawrence, Southampton, Berkshire Beer Co. (on nitro tap), Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti, Delirium Tremens, and much more, there's about 20 taps and an even more extensive bottle list. The service at the bar was great and the bartenders all knew about their beer, along with the waitresses, and especially the owner, Mike. The wait staff was friendly, fast, and knowledgeable.

The food was outstanding, I can't say enough about it so I'll just say this: Anything on that menu is going to be a good choice; you can't go wrong with any of it. The best part is it is reasonably priced food too, stuff that costs less than $20 a plate here would be close to $35+ at most other restaurants around the area. The beer was also priced fairly.

Overall a great friendly atmosphere that is a great place to stop and have a beer (or a few).

Stopped in Mikro with my girlfriend and another couple on Tuesday night 11/16/10. We've been wanting to go since the place was doing their soft opening. My buddy is working on the website for Mikro, Mike, the owner, was talking the place up to me at the Salisbury Brew Ski Fest in October, and since I'm a big fan of what Prime 16 does, I figured this place had to be fried gold.

Mikro has a very cool, beercentric bar vibe to it. You walk into through thick, velvet curtains into a small space with a beautiful, vaulted wood ceiling, 7 bar top dining tables, a central, wooden bar table with stools on either side, and a bar long enough to seat 12-15 people comfortably. A TV is angled towards the door, making viewing a little tough if you're up against the wall closest to the kitchen, but I'm not coming here to watch the game anyway. The focus is on the beer, as evidenced by the massive chalk board against the wall perpendicular to the bar displaying all draft and cask options. It is a little tough to see the board if you're seated far away or especially if people are sitting at the table directly in front of the board, which we were. It would be better served as a mounted displayed above the bar between the two A/C vents, but there are probably logistics to this scenario that don;t make it ideal. A more reasonable spot might be in the corner by the bay window facing the small, strip mall parking lot.

The quality and selection of beers on tap were pretty damn good the night we went; about 18 in all plus a cask of NEB Gandhi Bot and featuring the likes of Ommegang, Avery, Cpt. Lawrence, Old Burnside, Blue Point, Weyerbacher and even Oxford's very own Cavalry Brewing Co. Food was good as well; we shared the roasted, mixed nuts, a potato flatbread and a pulled chicken and mushroom flatbread, the steak, a burger, which I thought was great, as were the accompanying fries, and even the brownie sundae for dessert, sporting a unique caramel popcorn garnish. Service was excellent, very chatty, knowledgeable, friendly and attentive staff. Mike greeted everyone who walked in the door, also circled the room often and was even clearing tables himself! The menu seems a bit limited, as does the space, but everything is done nicely and will probably expand as much as opportunity allows it. As a warning, prices on drafts vary from $5-10 and are served in glassware reflective of the ABV of your beer selection. That said, you can expect to pay for the good stuff and around $50-$80 per couple if you're taking advantage of the selection. However, all of this information is clearly marked on the beer board and in the menu, which is more than I can say for Delaney's draft prices; so it's buyer beware!

As a graduate of Quinnipiac, I know what a desolate area Hamden can be, particularly for good beer bars. Those of age need not go into New Haven any longer or feel compelled to go solely to Side Street. If you;re looking for a relatively upscale, unique and professional quality beer drinking experience, Mikro will be a welcome addition to your list. I wish Mike the best and look forward to stopping in as frequently as I can to take full advantage of the ever-changing, high-quality beer list. Flights for everyone!

I've been to Mikro three times now, including twice during the soft opening. I waited until they were officially open and I had more experiences there to write up a review for CT's newest craft beer bar.

The atmosphere for me is the winning detail of this place. From the outside, Mikro is a unassuming anchor to a mini strip mall in the hills of the Quinnipiac University area. Once you enter and pass through the heavy curtains (awesome idea to block extra light and those big breezes from the door opening) you are in another world of low soft lighting, exposed beams, and "family". It reminds me of a converted barn interior, lots of wood and wall sconces with a few clothe beer flags and framed pictures. There are around 7-8 tables for 4, the bar, and a middle "bar" that seats another 8-10 a la Armsby Abbey. The clientele so far has been late 20's-early 40's, more grad students than undergrads I would say given it's proximity to Quinnipiac.

Service has been top notch as well, from the servers and bartenders to the owner as well who so far is always there helping out and mingling.

The beer selection here has been above average, there is always at least one beer that I'm excited about drinking. The only downside I feel are some of the prices. A Rastafar Rye rings up for $7, but even worse is that it was not a full pint because it was "over 7%". I'm sorry, but that's not reasonable. Then again, some other beers from other breweries that one would expect to be higher and price were actually lower, between $5.50-6.50. Not sure if it is ABV driving the price or what, but to me the pricing just didn't seem on track with the selection.

From the menu we ordered the cheese curds, chop salad, another salad I don't recall, and the Mikro burger to share between 3 people. The cheese curds are not what I consider "cheese curds", but maybe I'm spoiled with my Wisconsin travels. It was more mozzarella tasting, 5 pieces the size of bonbons, and $8. The chop salad was delicious as well, but for a salad with no meat that comes in a bowl again $8. The burger was worth it though, for $11 it was mighty in size and came with really good fries.

Mikro is a welcomes addition to the desert that is CT's beer bar scene, but I fear that some will be deterred from frequenting this place, especially the younger college kids in the area, due to pricing. I'll be frequenting Mikro, but in my particular situation traveling from Hartford I may find myself saving gas and money by hitting Eli's.

Our first visit to Mikro last night was great.
Located in a small strip mall on rt 10 in Hamden, they did a great job designing the space. The entire place IS the bar; there is no restaurant side vs bar side. It's a very cool bistro style interior with open rafters above the bar and fabric panel walls, which I assume helped keep the volume down even with a good sized crowd. Very conducive for enjoying beer, food and conversation. The music was kept at a reasonable volume.
We were met by the owner, Mike who is a really nice guy. His entire staff reflects his commitment to offering friendly, knowledgeble, service along with really good food. Our waitress was very cool.
Beer selection was very good. We had BBC Lost Sailor, Southampton Alt, NEB Wet Willy !!, DFH 90, North Coast IPA, Weihenstephan Korbinian ,Stone Smoked porter....there were lots of other good choices.
Food was very good. The Poutine was awesome !..best we've ever had. Roasted, spiced nuts were very tasty...and hot. I had the mushroom and carmelized onion flatbread and my girlfriend had pulled chicken ( free range ?) apple, aged cheddar, pesto flatbread....both were outstanding.Our friends had the Mikro burgers with belgian style fries...which they shared...very good.
So, cool atmosphere, great service ,food and beer. What's not to love ? Goes without saying that we will frequent this place for sure. A great addition to the CT craft beer scene.

I have been back a few more times and have been eating my way through the menu. The bistro steak is awesome ! and a pretty good deal for $14. I'm addicted to the hot spiced nuts. Beer selection rotates often..always good. Supports local breweries: NEBCO, Cavalry,BBC, Capt Lawrence. Gandhi Bot on cask last week !

just stopped by for my first beer at mikro bar.

Upon arrival I was impressed with the design and bar. Impressive and rustic with large natural railroad ties framing it. Bar tables on left. Stool bar in middle and nice long bar to admire the tap selection on the right.

The tap selection was really great. DFH, BBC, North Coast, Stone, Rogue, Captain Lawrence just to name a few. 20 different taps to choose from. Real nice bottle selection and all the appropriate glassware for the different styles adorn the bar. The have a mug club available as well.

Menu looked great from what I could see but didn't eat. The smells coming from the kitchen were very enticing though.
EDIT: went back and ate and food was great, had two of the flat bread pizzas, cheese board and fire roasted nuts, all very tasty.

I met mike the owner who was a real nice guy and from the looks of it knows how to run an proper beer/food establishment.

It is great to have a bar like this in hamden and 5 minutes from my house with a parking lot. Gets a bit tiring pumping quarters in the meters in new haven at prime when you are now getting 10 minutes per. (love prime though)

Wish this place the best of luck but fully confident after first visit it will be a staple in hamden offering a unique beer drinking experience for years to come.
