Location is one of the old chain restaurants that are all owned by the same parent company located across from the mall in Reno. Would have given a straight average to the atmosphere, but the neat little famous painting but with beer bumped it up a notch. TVs in good locations.

15 beers on tap, none of them over 6.6% abv (and that is the wild lemon wheat!). Came in, just after a long day skiing. Ask the server, whaddya got. A: Everything. I say "I'll try the stout." A: We don't have a stout right now. OK, so you lied about having everything, but even worse, its ski season (cold weather) and you don't have a stout? It gets worse. I read the wild lemon wheat is described as a "authentic berlin style wheat beer." I ask "is this a berlinerweisse?" Waitress gives me a confused and partly dirty look and says "I don't even know what you are talking about." The beer is like biting a lemon. I'm thinking, ok, cool, its tart, but at 6.6% how 'authentic' of a Berlin style wheat beer could this be?

So obviously this place does not cater to the geek crowd. I order a porter instead, old lady gets the aforementioned beer. Porter is weak, thin, not bitter, but decent enough that I finish it.

Having to listen to the non beer crowd critique beer was rough on the ears. Overheard: this (the authentic berlin wheat) beer is too bitter and tart. I like what you have, that's how beer is supposed to taste, like beer, not all bitter and lemony (other guy had bland pilsner).

I do like that they have 4oz tasters for $1, but really, would like to see a little more adventurous brewing spirit out of this place, cookie cutter stuff unfortunately.

This place was great. It was nice and relaxing. We were able to talk and hear ourselves. The waiters are very knowledgeable, courteous and prompt. The food was excellent. I had a platter of various sausages, all quite tasty. The menu featured plenty of appetizing choices. I had a flight of their key beers and a full glass of their milk stout. I paired it with their Wisconsin beer cheese soup. To this day, it is one of my favorite pairings ever. I would gladly go again.

I have been begging my wife to eat here for the last 3 years. We live a couple of hours away from Reno, and aren't in the city very often. She always wants to eat Italian or seafood, but recently she acquiesced. She couldn't believe what she'd been missing. The beer is , of course, great. I have purchased 6 -packs from this brewery in my home town. Their Outlaw Milk Stout is top notch. They have several home brews to choose from, and a sampler for those like me who want to try a bunch.

The food, however, is what sold my wife. We ended up with 5 in our group. Everyone had something different, and everyone was pleased. The sausage platter appetizer (Italian, Kielbasa and Bratwurst) really complimented the beers nicely, but the highlight of the menu was the Wisconsin-Style Beer Cheese Soup. Paired with the Milk Stout, it was a heavenly duo. I love this place !!

Reminds me of Rock Bottom, The Ram and the like. Not that it's a bad thing, but I was expecting more of a craft brewery feel than a 'commercialized' developed establishment that it was.

Food was the high point. Solid better than bar food fare. Beers- mostly average. This caters to the beer novice and not much for the typical BA.

This place was awesome!!!! We went there to try it out and it was great. I had a Buster #4 and an "Icky" IPA(named for the state fossil). Both were very good. Great IPA's! We shared a patty melt which was very good. When I went to go buy my tshirt and six pack, I noticed that they had free bumper stickers and magnets. How cool is that? I got some and got a cool tshirt. I was drinking Icky's for the rest of the time I was in Reno. It is nothing like BJ's or anything like that. They brew awesome beer!

Reno isn't a huge beer town but this brewpub is awesome. A real blessing to have in the middle of the high desert.

My first impression was a faux brewery with the same feel as some nationwide breweries like BJ's and Rock Bottom (not really a fan). This is more of a restaurant than a brewery that just happens to brew below average beers. I got the IPA and was not pleased, my friend didn't even finish his. Talked to a local and they said that IPA was their flagship, I feel sorry for the people of Reno.

Much larger than the original, kind of looks blah like a chain restaurant though.

Quality is good. I had the always solid Ichy, and a decent bitter.

Service was ok. Our server was slow, and kind of all of the place, but she was fairly pleasant.

Selection was very good. 17 beers on tap, with a nice wide variety of styles too. Would have liked to have seen a few more higher ABV beers though.

Food was good, standard brewery grub.

Prices were fair, about what you expect to pay at a place like this.

All in all? Certainly worth a stop, I just prefer the original.

This micro is located on S. Virginia St. behind Romano's Macaroni Grill. When the owner of Great Basin started doing this building over, once a chain Mexican restaurant I had a lot of respect for him. He invested a lot of money in this in a bad economy. I was so so wrong, they opened with a soft opening, meaning no advertising, nothing, and it was full and has been full ever since.
The decor is OK think Applebee's or Chili's and everything is the same as the other location except this one has a pizza oven.
The beer is the same, the food is above average and the service is terrible. And if you go during a busy time, its always a busy time, and get a seat at the bar you feel like you have won a mini lottery.

NOTE: This Great Basin location brews the same beers as the original location in Sparks, NV (found here: It has a brewing capacity nearly four times that of the original location, and will soon begin bottling Great Basin's flagship beer, Ichthyosaur IPA. Please DO NOT add new beers to this location's beer list; they will be duplicate listings. I'm waiting for BeerAdvocate to sort out this ordeal.

I wrote the following review on Tuesday, September 7th, but this location hadn't yet been added to the BA database, which explains the delay.

Stopped in here twice over Labor Day weekend; once on Thursday night and once on Monday afternoon. Only stayed for one round each time, and I didn't order any food (though it looked delicious).

The new brewpub looks a lot like a BJ's Restaurant from the outside: clean, boxy physique with a branded grain silo and modern flare. (This used to be an upscale Mexican-American restaurant called On The Border.) The interior sort of feels the same, though the shiny brewing vessels remind you that, unlike BJ's, they actually DO brew beer here. Clever and/or corny (your pick) Great Basin signs and pictures dot the walls and ceilings of the restaurant. All in all, it's actually a pretty comfortable setting. It definitely feels familiar.

The servers were very nice each time I was there, although occasionally absent-minded. That was ok though. I was on vacation, and I was very happy with their relaxed and conversational demeanor.

The selection and pricing at Great Basin (referring to both locations) are my top reasons for going there. The tap selection is ever-changing, and they've always got a few rare and interesting styles available (e.g. chile beers, rye beers, RISs). Not to mention, they're one helluva microbrewery! I've yet to find a beer of theirs I didn't like. And about the pricing: they charge $4 for a pint, $1 for a 4oz. taster, and only $9 for most growler fills. The $1 samplers are awesome! Instead of ordering 16oz. of the same beer, you can split the 16oz. up however you like for the same price.

While I would suggest visiting the original brewpub in Sparks first - it's got a lot more character - this is a great place to hang out, watch the game, and enjoy some delicious craft brew!
