Much smoke and fairly one-dimensional, with thicker base than a smoked, from imperial stout base. Decent icelandish stout. Black without head. Thanks for the sample, Brian.

Borg Brugghus 'Surtur Nr 30' @ 9.0% , served from a 330 ml bottle purchased for $6 , also got a Borg snifter
A-pour is a cola brown from the bottle to an almost black in the glass with a thin tan head leaving a fine spotty lace along the snifter
S-smoke , caramel malt , hints of licorice
T-dark chocolate & coffee start , smokey leather swallow
MF-mild carbonation , full bodied , so smokey
Ov-ok beer

330ml Bottle. It serves a dark liquid with subtle red glints, with a beige/brown head, some lacing. Nose is smoky, acrid, earthy, roasted malt, ash. Taste is very roasted malt, smoky, residual sugar, dark chocolate, notes of ash, dark coffee. Very interesting beer!

330ml bottle - brewed with 'sheep manure smoked malts'. Wait, what? As if civet-poop coffee wasn't bad enough?

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with the scantest of red-cola basal edges, and four fingers of puffy, rocky, and chunky brown head (eep!), which leaves a few instances of cannonball splash aftermath lace around the glass as it quickly beats it outta there.

It smells of meaty smoked caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, charred brown sugar syrup, black licorice, and some plain earthy, weedy, and wet grassy green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser singed toffee thing, further free-range ashy notes, medium-dark chocolate wafers, treacle, Scandihoovian anise 'candies', and more earthy, floral, and dead grassy verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is rather understated in its perfunctory frothiness, the body a stoic medium weight, and generally smooth, with a creaminess that seems to be raring to be go, from the, er, get-go! It finishes off-dry, the smoke abating a fair bit, leaving the malt and bittering agents to contend with a slowly rising metallic heat.

Overall, I'm happy to report that no ovine droppings were detected at any point during my enjoyment of this brew - the smoke is indeed kind of earthy, but that's the extent of it. Otherwise, this is a heady and actually drinkable version of the Icelandic take on the style. Skál!
