Sample at Max's on 7/23/14 (from notes)

A: Pitch black with mocha head and collar.

S: Mostly coffee with a nice roast and slightly sweet malts.

T: Delicious. Just enough bourbon. More on the back end. Pretty sweet. Coffee on the front, but more in the smell.

M: Smooth with light carbonation.

O: Quite well balanced with just enough bourbon in it. The coffee helps to cut the bourbon a bit, which I like because I'm not a huge bourbon guy.

eyes...
super dark cocoa head on this, massive foam cap rumbling to about 3 fingers, lacing is sub par probably due to the higher ABV, there are legs apparent from the alcohol. this thing is pitch black, even chuck norris admits this is dark, the head settles in in short order not completely collapsing like my hopes and dreams but it does melt away fast, a nice enough looking brew

nose...
chocolatey, burnt molasses, dry roasted coffee beans, the booze reveals itself in a sort of bourbon-ish character, I am alos getting an almost nutty aroma as well, over all the coffee is pretty damn dominant, it is almost the same as stickin' your schnozz in a freshly
ground bag of dark roast, damn awesome, I get little different notes on the fringes almost every time... licorice this time... super nice.

taste etc...
medium to heavy mouth feel, the carbonation (as pillowy as it looks on the pour) is kind of absent... I would have liked just a hair more here, kind of chalky cocoa notes with a good amount of sweetness, almost like a cup of dunkin made light and sweet, the ABV drop kicks you in the stomach but does not edge into the flavor at all, it has coffee flavor to be sure but less than you would think, it has a nice balance of flavors all around but is a touch too sweet for my particular taste, I like coffee black and dark roast so this beer does not hit that note

verdict?
tasty and worth checking out, but not the type of coffee notes I particularly like, a solid beer and very smooth considering the strength.. the place that was serving this lists the ABV at 10.5

I stopped into Krugels Deli in Wilkes-Barre on 30JAN14 enroute to Ft Indiantown gap for some lunch and libations. They had a few stouts on, but this one sounded enticing. Had two 10-oz tulips, at $6.00 per.

It was an exceedingly dark brown color, topped by a creamy, mocha dollop of foam, with A-1 lacing left behind. The nose had a decent amount of coffee present, but it didn't come off as being bitter. It was medium in body, and smooth and creamy, with minimal prickle present.

Flavor began with some semi-sweet choco blended with coffee. The oatmeal made it soft and creamy, and there was little, if any, bitterness. Was like a nice mocha milk-shake, that is, until the floral hop finish kicked in! This was solid all the way, and went well with my buffalo chicken sub. Prosit!!
