Pours a clear beep red or mahogany, tan 1/2 inch head, frothy, nice lacing. Smell is an all-out assault of big citrusy hops! Grapefruit, tangerine and mandarin orange all swirling around in the nose.

Taste is bitter grapefruit, strong bitter hops but with a nice fruity malt profile big enough to not be overpowered. Some tinges here and there of alcohol. The alpha acids stick to your cheeks, tongue and lips. It's lightly sticky in the mouth but just a bit. The biggest difference I detect from this beer and the draft only version I tried last year is that this one is drier. Really tasty (and I stress tasty)stuff. Bravo again!

I heard so much about this brew through the fellows at free the hops, i had to check this one out. glad i did...

it pours a very brownish-amber. the head on this was very, very thin.

the smell: pine, hops, and some cintrus (orange and tangerine and grapefruit)...and more hops and pine. i could sit here and smell this brew for a while.

taste- the hops slams you pretty good on this one. alcohol is pretty evident on this, which may turn some away, but doesn't really bother me. the pine and oranges and grapefruit come back for appearance on the taste as well.

mouthfeel: i love love the way this is kind of oily and creamy in the mouth. it coats the mouth, leaving you tasting the hops on this for awhile after you sip this.

drinkability: i could drink this beer all night. this is by far one of the best double ipas i have had in long time. i am glad atlanta's so close to birmingham because i will be making several trips over to have this one frequently. a definite must have for ipa/hop lovers.

12oz bottle with 2005 on the neck, a different label too.. this one shows a turtle behind the wheel of a convertible truck cab. a hippopatomus shaped cloud looms over his shoulder. i digress.

orgasmically phenomenal.

deep red and thick despite its translucense, BHM settles with sticky, pastry-like foam and attached lace arms. nose creates a spicy balance between citrusy hops, molasses, and the charred wood smell of a fireplace burning real wood. perfectly carbonated with just the right hop blend to leave the right amount of green film on my teeth.. no chalkiness. drinkable in its lightness but heavy enough to feel substantial. first sting is the green botanical leaf of a hop.. resinous, with alcohol intertwined in the kick. settles into a fizzy malt that leaves unripe fruits behind.. starchy green banana and crabapple. overall best described as a fruit salad medley of citrus and sweeter fruits.. layered coyly with sadism and a wink of the eye. boy this is a terrific brew.. one that i will not see the likes of again anytime soon. kicks the pants off lagunitas' imperial red ale by leaps and bounds.

gotta get me down to terrapin country!

I received this in a trade from blitz134.

The pour is deep crimson with a thin, spotty head. The nose is loaded with pine along with grapefruit and caramel malts. The hops don't slap you in the face, but this beer has plenty of grapefruit and pine to go around and the caramel malts help give this a sticky, resin taste. This has a lot of what I like in double IPA's. It's too bad this didn't make it out to LA, but hey, I've got one more delicious bottle left! Thanks Chris.

Single 12 oz. Bottle -- $2.75

The Big Hoppy Monster poured a translucent dark amber with a robust cream-colored head. The scent of this beer is dominated by powerful hops and bitter citrus. Upon tasting this beer, this hop aroma delivers with a powerful bittersweet explosion complimented with sugary malts.

The brewers refer to this concoction as an “Imperial Red Ale,” but I have no idea what that actually means…a double ___ red ale? Whatever it is, the taste is reminiscent of a sweeter Rogue Dead Guy.

Good beer although not as complex as the label (and local beer sellers) promised; too bad Terrapin retired it.

Imperial Red Ale. Pours out red and all delicious-looking.
Smells all sweet and hoppy - floral. Time. To. Drink.
Yum... Goes down smooth with a nice malty base, with generous amounts of hops piled on top. Smooth and a bit sticky. I need to find some more of this. A bit like an IPA, but a bit maltier. Hides the 8% quite well. Very nice.

Thanks to 1HopMonster for grabbing me this one right after its release, I'm a big fan of freshness.
A beautiful clear, reddish beer with very nice carbonation and loads of lacing. Mostly what I smell is hops. The taste is very well balanced for something with such a strong hop aroma, pleasant surprise. It's a very sweet and citrusy flavor and the body is full but not over the top. There is a nice mellow bitterness on the tongue in the finish as well as a light bitter-sweet flavor that lingers, not at all cloying however. This just seems too light for something listed at 8%. I mean with no hint of alcohol in the aroma or taste this becomes a very dangerously drinkable beer.
OK... although I didn't score this all 5's, I should add that I find it to be an exceptionally well crafted beer and without any sensory flaws, freshness is the key to this.

Had this on tap and in bottle. I really preferred it in a bottle!! The aroma is slightly malty (but wait) a huge, heavy hop smell: flowers, pine resin, grapefruit, and pineapple. Smells very similar to Middle Ages 10th annniversary. Head is creamy, off-white, that fully diminished. Body is clear reddish-brown. Intitial flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. The initial taste is hoppy, but wait, the malt really comes through later. Carbonation is soft/flat with a light alcoholic finish. This is really an outstanding brew, as are all Terrapin beers. Unfortunatley, this may be a one-time bottling. This is most definitely NOT the 5 Seasons version of Big Hoppy Monster.

Clear crimson hue, solid slab of creamy off-whitish foam above, slim but staying...

Aroma: wide-open, huge flowering of piney hop aromatics, just the kind I love! Grapefruit, and other citrus are at play, but pine needles are largest in the overall profile...sweet, and slightly bitter, stuff here! Very nice! I could just smell
his and smell this all day long! Rich, resiny, resonant.

Taste, already...bitter, but extra-sweet and fruity, a huge expansion in the mouth, a blast on the senses...a fierce delivery of flavor...huge, immense...big and beautiful...humbling...delicious...wonderful play on the tongue, bitterness, fruit, and more, keeping the senses busy with all the flavors at the ready.

Full-bodied, incredibly flavored, assuredly pleasurable for hopheads like me...dang it, but this is great stuff!
Let all hopheads know that they must bow to the direction of Athens once in awhile,too...and genuflect to the folks at Terrapin. This is amazing stuff!

"truly unique in taste in complexity", says the label. Well, I've had other beers like this, but they're so few and far between that it's useful to recognize each one that comes cross our path.

A humdinger from the Peach State! Cheers!

Pours a ruby red hue with a good inch of creamy, off-white head that sticks around a bit. Aroma of spicy fresh hops, pine, very light sweet malt, and some astringency. Palate is again dominated by the huge presence of spicy hops, caramel malt, pine, a hint of citrus (grapefruit), some astringency, and a warming alcohol finish. Body is nice, thick (but not syrupy), and very creamy for the style. I'm a fan, and wish I could get my hands on more.

Thanks to hopdog for this...
Appears a reddish tone with spotty lacing being left behind.
Smell is of pine and citrus and sweet malt.
Taste is of caramel and sugary dough with nice hops coming through.
Mouthfeel is sticky with hop resin and sugary standing out.
Drinkability...very nice brew.

12oz bottle of new fall 2005 release. Sampled 11/07/2005.

Poured transparent and still-looking nut-brown with a big creamy off-white head and excellent lace. Smells fragrantly hoppy; nose-tickling grapefruit and pine on a sticky-sweet malt base. Juicy and malty up front, with a big and fruity developing interplay of wood, pine and grapefruit that doesn't let up throughout. Medium-sweet sticky finish. Almost still, syrupy, and creamy body with a touch of carbonation.

Very nice for an American-style hop-forward IPA.

I volunteered at the 3rd Annual Georigia Craft Brew Challenge, and my primary task over the course of the evening was to serve this baby up to festival attendees. Of course i got to enjoy a fair bit of it myself. I'm a lucky man.

This is a beautiful "Imperial Red Ale." Dark ruby red. Thick malty backbone supporting a huge hoppiness. In spite of high ABV and intense hopping, i thought it was quite smooth and drinkable. I picked up quite a few bottles of this at Green's and i'm glad i'll be able to enjoy it for a while to come.

First bottle review of this beer. I actually had this about about a year and a half ago and wasn't overly impressed...but the aroma on this is already much stronger than I ever remembered.

Pour is a dark crimson red, perfectly transparent. Poured with a white head that reduced to a thin layer. Aroma is pretty amazing. A strong floral and citrus aroma packs the nose on this one. Orange and tangerine predominate with some hints of lemon.

Taste is a little milder than the aroma hints at. Comes across with a good dose of bitterness, mainly resin with some floral and citrus touches. Nicely balanced with a good hit of sweet caramel malts. There is a bit of alcohol noticable in the finish. True to style and reminicent of other flavors typical of the Terrapin ale lineup.

Mouthfeel is medium to full and is almost oily on the tongue. Not much carbonation. Good mouthfeel for the style, nothing exceptional.

Drinkability is good as well. The touch of alcohol is what keeps this from being higher. But overall a good flavor and a delicious aroma is going to make this beer a hit.

This was one of my favorites at the Classic City Brewfest, I enjoyed many samples. It is a mahogany colored brew yielding a thick, frothy puff of oatmeal hued head. lacing is adequate and hangs on the glass like moss.

Aroma is big and powerful, brimming with juicey citrus and pine-drenched florals. There's an underlying caramel-sweetness to it backing up the hops. A very impressive nose on this one.

Oh yeah, it's all good in the flavor dept! Lots of sticky orange and tangerine, delicate florals, and sappy pinecones. It is expertly balanced with a semi-sweet, caramel and honey malt overload. This is a perfect example of the style here, and so balanced!

The mouthfeel is full, creamy, and absolutely mouth-coating. Flavors continue to roll around on you tongue long after you've taken your last sip. I sure do hope that I'll run into this one again some day!

On tap at Taco Mac near Ellard.

Pours medium brownish with very little head.

Aroma seems dead on for style. Flowery and bitter hop aromas combine along with a caramel-like malt sweetness. Some piney aromas as well.

Rich mouthfeel, reasonably smooth. Tons of bitterness, floral flavors and potent pineyness. Solid malt backbone with some caramel flavors. Finishes with a dry, chalky bitter aftertaste. Delicious!

Very well made double IPA. I would consider this a sessionable version of the style. Well done.

This is definitely a bigger beer than the old 5 Seasons recipe. Amber brown body with a nice thick head. The aroma is a nice thick caramel malt with a nice spine of citrus peel hops. Malt dominates the flavor as well, but the hops provide a good bitterness to balance out the sweetness of the malt. Nice silky mouthfeel. Very good.
