12oz bottle poured into a Stone Imperial Russian Stout tulip.

Funny thing about this beer, I've been dying to try it forever, and have actually bought it three times before, but shortly after each time, I always would throw it in as an extra for a trade since a lot of people have it on their 'Wants'. Well I read a few threads about how great this beer is and that it goes Founders Breakfast Stout a run for its money, so I bought one today and am drinking it tonight before I lose another one.

A - This beer is very formidable looking. The beer itself pours an obsidian black, and it seems that there won't be much head on it, but it slowly rumbles to life and a few moments later a huge, 3-fingered head rises from the muck. This head is incredibly impressive, looking more like frothed milk by how creamy and smooth it looks, and is a DARK mocha color. Retention is great and leaves behind excellent lacing.

S - Smell is... different. A strong coffee aroma is the first noticeable characteristic, then dark bittersweet chocolate. However, I'm also getting some astringency that I would assume is from the alcohol. It's subtle, but definitely noticeable. Otherwise it's sweet smelling and my eyes open wider just smelling the coffee in this.

T - Thankfully, the astringency in the nose is much less distinct in the taste. The first notes in the taste are a delicious combination between an almost fudge-like chocolate with nice bitterness and the freshly roasted coffee. An abundance of malts help provide a sweet counter to this double-hit of bitterness while offering a silky smooth mouthfeel. There is some alcohol in the back-end of this beer, but its more warming than astringent. The finish is very long and filled with chocolate bitterness.

M - Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with low carbonation. Very smooth, easily backing up the Imperial Oatmeal moniker given by Terrapin itself. Leaves a nice coating on the palate while drinking.

D - Drinkability is high. Althought some alcohol is discernible, it's masked well for the most part under the intense creaminess, bold flavors, and palate-covering viscosity. An excellent beer and I will surely be keeping my eye out for more of these.

Appearance: Wake 'n Bake pours out close to pitch black and is opaque in the glass. A dark mocha head forms, which has pretty nice retention. Lacing is good as well.

Smell: Lots of roasted malt and coffee come out first on the nose. I get more slightly sweet chocolate than I was anticipating, as well as a light dose of floral hops that really rounds this beer out well. On the nose I definitely prefer this beer over FBS.

Taste: Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate all come out in great waves. The sweetness of the chocolate really balances out the bitterness of the coffee nicely. I definitely get some hops on the back end that again adds to the balance.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: This beer is right on medium bodied, and drinks extremely smoothly due to just about perfect carbonation levels. It is a bit light for my taste. I find this beer very drinkable. Very nice flavors. Overall I probably like it just a bit better than FBS, actually.

Pours dark with a dark brown head.

Aroma is of coffee and dark malts.

Taste is of COFFEE, dark malts, chocolate and some bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, dry at the end and somewhat flat.

Overall, a decent brew. Coffee is the dominant force in this one. Not as balanced as others, but good for the style.

Pours with just a faint wisp of deep tan head, reasonable lacing and retention considering the soft carbonation.

Big roast coffee notes and tobacco with hint of dark chocolate and underlying plum.

On the palate this has a bit of a rough, bitter finish, but a velvety texture that highlights some mid-palate sweetness (that lingers unexpectedly). Coffee rules the day, though.

The texture on this is sublime, but it stays around fairly sweet, and until it nears room temperature there's a bit of a ragged edge on the finish. Very close to being great, this will have to settled for damned good.

Pours a completely opaque black with a thick cocoa colored head that retains impressively. The aroma is an intense blend of espresso, chocolate, cream, and a hint of rum and dark fruits. The flavor is similar to the aroma, with a massive coffee presence, along with some milk chocolate, dark fruits, and a slightly off-dry finish. The mouthfeel is a bit lighter than expected but doesnt detract, and drinkability is excellent for the abv.

P: Pitch black body with a finger of frothy dark mocha cream on top. A nice creamy ring that clings the edges of the glass.

S: Super sweet nose, chocolate covered espresso beans, sweet coffee creamer, dry rolled oats.

T/M: Heavy fresh roasted espresso beans, sweet oats, pancake batter, non-dairy coffee creamer, vanilla bean, maple syrup, cinnamon baked apples, black pepper corns, touch of smoke and cereal grains. Chocolate covered cherries in the dry finish. Thick oily mouthfeel that coats the mouth and throat. Carbonation is low and almost flat. Lingering chocolate chip pancakes.

O: Where has this been my whole life? Sweet chocolate goodness. The dairy sweetness is almost too much but it's still a fantastic stout. So far this has been one of my top stout choices. Well rounded and delicious. Cheers!

Poured into a HF snifter. Thanks ghost, I haven't had this in a while and enjoy this beer. 2011 bottle.

A - Pours black with a very nice, creamy and light-tan head. Eventually gets down to some thicker lacing with good retention. Falls off the side of the glass quite easily. Probably higher than a 4, but I'm rounding down.

S - Sweet, slightly strong coffee aroma. Some chocolate coming through.

T - Light yet burnt coffee, sweetness, flavors coming together in the finish. The flavors fall off in the middle and pick back up in the finish, possibly due to the body. The coffee finish is enjoyable, yet slightly burnt. I don't mind it, but that's just me.

M - On the lighter side of medium. A little more body would do the trick.

O - I could probably drink this quite often, especially if it were available to me. It is all around a very solid seasonal. I probably shouldn't have reviewed this after Birth of Tragedy.
