Bottle into a snifter. Pitch black body topped with a dense lacing of mocha-colored foam. Chocolate, coffee, lactose, roasted malt, and vanilla on the nose. Weak aroma. Very interesting taste - different from anything I've had. Huge coffee and chocolate backed with lactose, oatmeal-raisin, vanilla, and caramel. Very chewy and dense. Really, really good. This beer tastes like oatmeal-raisin cookies and chocolate-infused expresso.

Pitch black thin layer of head with some retention and no real lacing. Nose is heavy coffee and chocolate. Flavors are much the same with loads of coffee and nice milk chocolate finish. Hints of earthy hops and a nice sweet cocoa finish. Medium bodied, smooth and a touch of dryness. Loving this stuff, definitely tip notch and we'll worth seeking out.

Pours pitch black with a bit of a dark, motor oil colored head. Not much fizz in the look. Large roasted malt and coffee notes form a wintery-stout aroma. A sip opens up flavors of roasted malts, and coffee first, with a bit of creamy, oatmeal towards the finish. The taste profile feels like you're eating breakfast and drinking coffee a bit. Mouth feel is robust and creamy. Overall, an excellent imperial stout in all aspects. The coffee forward flavor does it for me. It also feels good, which helps set it apart from other similar brews.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Poured at 50°F from a 12oz bottle (2015 vintage) into a Spiegelau Stout glass. Consumed on 24Jan16.
LOOK: Pour with a half fingers worth of cinnamon colored foam. At 30 seconds, the foam changes color to khaki, but the size of foam head remains unaffected. At 1 minute and 40 seconds, the foam head halves itself. Black in color with an orange tint. There is a moderate amount of very small rising bubbles. Lacing is moderate in quantity and thin.
SMELL: Very strong aromas of sweet coffee are backed by mild aromas of vanilla and oatmeal, subtle aromas of bitter roasted malts and sweet chocolate, and hints of alcohol.
TASTE: Very strong sweet coffee flavors enter initially and remain dominant for 3 seconds. Mild oatmeal and sweet chocolate flavors follow after those 3 seconds along with subtle vanilla flavors as coffee flavors grow stronger. Subtle bitter roasted malts enter lastly as all previous flavors persist, except for vanilla, which grow slightly stronger.
FEEL: Full-bodied with hints of carbonation. Goes down very smooth and creamy. Finishes with a mild dryness. There is a mild alcoholic warmth as the beer goes down the throat.
NOTE: One of the most coffee forward beera that I have had. I loved it. I also loved how the 9.4% alcohol couldn't be perceived in the taste.

A- jet black with a dark tanish brown head that's fairly small and creamy. no light showing through
S- dark roasted coffee bean smell, with some dark chocolate notes.
T- coffee or maybe even espresso up front with chocolate flavors present also. alcohol is there but not in a big way.
F- low carbonation full bodied with a chalky feel
O- great beer that I got in my growler that I would love to try next in the bottle. well worth it.

Look - beautiful jet black with light mocha head...circle ring througout

Smell - sweet coffee...I don't smell the normal chocolate of a stout and I won't pretend to be able to smell hints of oats

Taste - coffee and a light presence of bitter cocoa...it doesn't have the bitterness of some imperials...while it isn't complex, it is delicious. Not much in the roasted malt flavor I normally enjoy in a stout.

Feel - very smooth...medium to heavy carbonation...body is medium to heavy...I am not getting the alcohol here and at 9+ ABV that's impressive

Overall - I find this to be very different from my top Oatmeal (Smith) and Imperials (Yeti, Founders). It is very much a coffee stout...and for an avid coffee, beer and bourbon (figure I'd through all my vices in there)...I find it to be quite good.

Look: an austere silken, opaque black with minimal light brown head, resembling oatmeal.
Smell: Sweet coffee and oatmeal notes, as one might imagine. Smells like breakfast. Not very strong, but pleasant, nonetheless.
Taste: Oaty stout flavor dominates as it rests on the tongue, with a slight coffee and booze finish/aftertaste.
Feel: This is an extremely smooth beer with almost nothing in the way of a carbonated feeling. Unlike certain milk stouts (Nitro, e.g.), this beer fails to give the impression of flatness. It's just breakfast, after all. When is there carbonation in a breakfast?
Overall: A fantastic beer to be savored at any time of day. The oat and coffee notes mingle harmoniously, rather than in dissonance.

Look: Dark black. Not much head. Glass soapiness apparent.

Smell: Tabasco, coffee, soy sauce.

Taste: Upfront taste is roasty-smoky coffee, which transitions into momentary
malty sweetness and alcohol, then concludes with semi sweet choco espresso bitterness.
Huge flavors;Very intense. Lingers on the palate.

Feel: Some booze burn and prickliness. A little syrupy.

Overall: A big beer with very intense flavors. Enjoyed, but truth be told, I was
almost running out of gas with respect to flavor-intensity overload. Don't
think I could have drunk much more than 12 oz. Surprisingly very little fogginess
given the nearly 10% ABV.

Ok, I do not know how I missed the 2014 vintage on the label but I am sure this will affect the experience. Pours pitch black with just a thin film of a peanut butter colored head. Moderate lacing. Aroma is nothing more than a mild mustiness. Stale coffee, chocolate and some malt flavors. Somewhat sweet on the tongue. Light carbonation. Oily. I have to believe that the vintage has an effect on my rating. I will try this again with a more current vintage.

Solid stout. Pours thick with little head and some lacing. Great body. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate aromas. Taste and texture are very pleasant, almost like a great, freshly roasted coffee, some sweetness and finishes with an undercurrent of fruit aromas. Again, a solid brew.

2015 vintage 12 oz bottle, enjoyed fresh and poured into a tulip.

L: Pours a thick opaque black displaying a ruddy brown tint when swirled, with a thin tan head that rapidly recedes to a ring leaving fairly decent lacing.

S: Massive coffee. The nose is almost entirely coffee, with a hint of chocolate malt and some alcohol. Smells like a freshly brewed cup of joe. Very inviting.

T: Big coffee flavors hit the tongue first, with alcohol heat building rapidly to an almost overpowering intensity, made even more intense by a kick of prickly carbonation. Chocolate notes mingle into the mix as the coffee flavors slowly fade to eventually uncover an almost molasses-like caramel sweetness that lingers on the tongue long after the sip, alongside a faint background note of coffee grounds.

F: Medium-full in texture, this is a sturdy brew and feels quite good rolled across the tongue.

O: The nose is phenomenal and the flavor follows, but the 9.4% alcohol is not at all well-hidden and spoils the fun a little. I have had several imperial stouts with as much or higher ABV than this that were much smoother. A tasty beer, but I feel it would be better if the alcohol could be mellowed out more than a bit. Perhaps some age will improve this beer.

Really old coffee oatmeal stout. The coffee and chocolate are extremely well balanced and more importantly, at least for my purposes, this stout is sweet, but not overly so like some stouts are. Really delicious.

12 oz bottle. Jet black with thin mocha head, little lace. Bitter chocolate, espresso aroma. All coffee flavor, bitter with some burnt sugar. Medium oily mouthfeel. Tasty brew but was hoping for a little creamier feel and less bitterness.

pours jet black with a solid dark cream colored head.

smells like coffee, nice aroma. some chocolate to this as well.

taste starts sweet like chocolate then finishes with a coffee bitterness. thin body as well, i'm sure it will even out as it warms.

pretty good beer BUT my only complaint would be it is too bland.

Uncapped the beer and was immediately blasted with a strong black coffee aroma. Pours black as hell, soft red/brown head. Deep coffee and slight hazelnut flavor. Absolutely fantastic flavor, but a slightly thin mouthfeel, honestly want more from a stout, but for 10.1% I'm very satisfied. The aroma and flavor of this beer are what makes this so amazing. It'd be much more delectable and fit for a rich breakfast/desert beer if it had more body IMO. I'm eating cornbread with it and it's a pretty solid combo.

Poured into a pint glass, with a fat girl on a Harley feel in the glass. Oh this might be good!!

Used oils black, a very thin khaki and pillowy head. Smells of rich coffee, toasty burnt marshmallow and breakfast at the Waffle House on a cold ass morning. First taste of toasty, malt, rich velvety breakfast, or dessert. Smooth, so smooth- thank you flaked oats! You have hit every chord of an oatmeal stout. Warming, medium body with a tempting to keep sipping. Can't tell it's a 10% beer with the mouthfeel at all. Well done, so glad I picked this up!!! Too bad it's 70 degrees in NC tonight. I would love to age a year or two out. Hands down marvelous beer!

Enjoyed a pint of this at my company's annual holiday party.

Pours black and opaque with a creamy, dark tan head. Right off the bat you get plenty of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt in the aroma. You get exactly what is advertised in the flavor; coffee and oatmeal. There's a nutty and burnt aspect to it as well. Finishes bitter with a kiss of alcohol at the end. This is a full-bodied, well-crafted brew, but I could probably do without the oatmeal being so prominent. A nice variation on an imperial stout.

12 oz bottle poured into a Stella chalice. Vintage 2015.

Pours pitch black with a thin ring of mocha foam that struggles to the surface. Aroma immediately smacks you with a strong, stale coffee. Smells great. First sip is full of coffee flavor. The beer is sweet but the bitterness from the roasted malt and coffee cut through the sweetness like a knife, making it extremely easy drinking for the ABV. Thick, viscous mouthfeel and roasted bitter finish.

As the beer warms, more of the boozy/alcohol flavors become prevalant, but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of this beer. This is a very good Imperial Stout, and (as a coffee lover) the coffee makes this a home run. I'll be buying another 4 pack.

Pours like a thick coffee. And it smells like you are in a diner at 430 am after a night out. I can almost smell bacon in the background. It's very smooth and goes down easier than it should. So much flavor packed into a single brew. I love this stuff.

Every time I have waked n' baked, be it through booze or weed, I have been very regretful. Three hours into the session reality becomes an abstraction. Five hours in, I understand how opiate addicts operate. Being wasted constantly is in many ways more pleasant than being sober constantly. But it's also horrifying, the same as constant sobriety. The key to living without despondency is a balance between mental states, and that simply cannot be achieved if you start getting fucked up as soon as you become conscious. Also, our society really super duper heavily incentivizes us not to be drunk constantly.

All that I just wrote was a basic realization. I came to it when I was 15. But still, sometimes, here and there, I'll get super excited about a wake and bake event: a weekend starting with brunch, a football game, long bike ride, etc. I always regret the drinking part, and I remember that regret, yet I still look forward to these events the way I used to look forward to Christmas.

I think part of the reason why the Southern US has relatively larger problems with substance abuse is that their culture idolizes the kind of "HEE YAW" recklessness embodied by this beer but also very harshly punishes anyone who deviates from their very narrow standards of acceptable comportment. A Southern Man is wild and free, riding his motorcycle while listening to the nu-metal station, but, gull darnitt, ain't no one gonna break the law in this here town.

The kids get mixed messages, is what I'm saying.

This does not mean to confuse Athens, GA--one of the most culturally accepting areas of the country--with "the south." Athens is in the south but not of the south. The do not hate the south. They are not ashamed of it. But there's things about the south Athens might not be pleased with. I'm that way with midwestern white trash.

So what the hell is this? What's their whole ethos? Why does the beer name bother me?

Because the names matter and the packaging matters and the price matters. We cannot decouple our sensory responses to a beer from the rest of it, which is why blind tastings engender such anger. But I don't think we should. I also don't know where this is going.

I love Terrapin? How about that? They're good and I love where the come from culturally even though the guys who run the place would probably hate me.

This pours dark and squishy. It smells like a goddamn coffee oatmeal stout, which is about my favorite thing.

Tastes... pretty amazing. Barley up front, equal parts burnt and sweet, with some wonderful oatmeal complication rushing in, followed by oatmeal complication and coffee, ending wonderfully rough--again, like an oatmeal.

I cannot tie my thoughts together right now. I wish my thoughts would die. This beer is wonderful.

Look - Pitch black with a dark tan head. Leaves some lacing.

Smell - A fresh brewed cup of coffee is the overwhelmingly strongest smell... just that and a hint of chocolate.

Taste - Just what you would expect from the smell... Strong coffee flavor that is smoothed out by the oatmeal. Just a hint of sweetness on the front and a bitter coffee taste on the end. Great flavor.

Feel - Bubbly, yet smooth. Thin body for a stout, especially one at almost 10% abv.

Overall - Terrapin's best beer.

Poured jet black. Smell immediately of coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate. Taste was similar but I felt the coffee overwhelmed many of the other flavors. Coffee bitterness lingers in the mouth. I could probably give convince someone that this wasn't beer at all, but just an ice coffee. Mouth feel is medium to full bodied. Overall an very solid coffee stout though a step or two below elite.

The label was cool and the name sounded promising. Overall, a good, simple stout. It did not meet my expectations mainly because the title sounded much tastier than the actual beer.
