Im sampling a 2006 bottle poured into a pint glass at room temp. The beer pours a clear amber color, although I do get some dredges at the bottom of the bottle. I tried to decant and miss this for the beginning of the drinking, but some yeasties got in the glass.
Minimal surface layer of off white head foams up and becomes scattered islands.
The aroma is rich with hop scents, I get a bit of citrus, some pine sap and a bit of grassy notes as well. Also some caramel and hints of boozy alcohol too.
The first sip reveals an average body, with fine tingly carbonation. The texture is a little thin for a bigger beer.
Flavor is sweet caramel and berries up front but rolls to a bit of citrusy rindy hops in the middle but finishes with some warm booze. Doesnt make it undrinkable, but certainly creates more of a sipper. A decent tasting and smelling beer, but I wish the body was a little beefier. The booze is a little daunting on the finish, but it is a strong ale. Could be an okay beer to have 1-2 of them.
2011 vintage: poured into a snifter at cellar temp. The beer pours a clear coppery orange hue with creamy beige head of about 1 cm foaming up and fading to a clingy edge layer and some wispy islands.
Aroma is hops with grapefruit and pine sap dominant, but I do get a little bit of toffee in the background.
First sip reveals a smooth and light textured brew with very minimal carbonation. Body is lighter than anticipated but very soft and smooth on the palate. Makes for a very easy drinking beer even with the higher octane rating.
Flavor is sweet toffee momentarily but moves to some pine sap and grapefruit rind hops with a bit of general astringency and very dry finish. I do get some malt notes on the finish too with some roasted grain at the very end of the beer.
The alcohol is very well hidden and I am finishing this glass much faster than anticipated. A well crafted bigger beer, I would definitely buy again even with a light body.

Poured up dark amber with fairly thick white head, nice aroma rising immediately from glass, dark fruits, citrus, mostly rye and malts. Good mouthfeel medium carbonation. Warming but alcohol hidden well. First tried years ago, pleasantly surprised being my first rye. Used to buy regularly, sad it's bitten the dust now, why... ? was a nice beer, good change from norm!

This beer is a relic, was one of my first IP beer trades back in the day.
The color is almost morphing, I've seen it dark orange, light brown, all over the place, not really, but it really is subjective especially depending on the lighting. Full inch of off white head. Aroma for having double hops and rye was rather muted.
Taste wise it is just as much rye and malt forward as it is hoppy. There's too much other stuff to compete with, dark fruit, woodiness. The alcohol is pretty big on this one too.
I can see why they don't make it anymore. It wasn't bad, there just isn't really a big selling malty double rye ipa, and this wasn't gonna be the first.

Pours a clear amber producing 1.75 fingers of somewhat lived, beige, finely bubbled head that leaves a wash & spidery strings of lacing. Aroma is dark malt, caramel, brown sugar, pumpernickel bread, spicy rye, alcohol & a faint hint of leafy floral hops. Taste is dark malt, brown sugar & caramel, nuts & rye spice, fresh cut pumpernickel, raisin & alcohol booziness with a faint hint of leafy floral hops. Sweet but with an alcohol bitter finish & spice which linger in the aftertaste & become increasingly drier. The finish & for a short duration in the aftertaste are the only truly bitter portions of the sip. Alcohol prominence is heavy even considering the ABV. Mouthfeel is heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, lightly prickly, creamy, moderately chewy but also a little syrupy & slick.
