Terrapin All American Imperial Pilsner - Terrapin Beer Company.. One of my all time favorite breweries. These guys keep pumping out winners and when this one hit the streets, it did not disappoint. I had a bomber from 2012. Vintage to say the least ! A very nice orange color with a nice citrusy flavor . The citrus is there , but definitely not over powering. Starts with a bready malt backbone and then really kicks in with the hoppy bitterness.

"Back from a long congressional recess, the All American Imperial Pilsner makes its return. Brewed with ALL American malts, hops, water and yeast, this beer is clearly the front runner for this election year." Brewed in the style of an American Double / Imperial Pilsner. Originally brewed in 4 packs of 12 oz. bottles annually for a summer seasonal release in the Terrapin Monster Beer Tour, this beer was discontinued until it was resurrected in the Summer of 2012 in light of the upcoming presidential election.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to a Terrapin Pilsner glass. Served north of 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a medium-thick frothy off white creamy head over a medium hazy amber-yellow body with moderate carbonation. Retention is above average and lacing is light and spotty. A lack of clarity makes for an interesting deviation from what is expected from a pilsner, imperial or not. 3.75

(Smell) Aromas of cracker pilsner malts, a touch of biscuity caramel malt body with a dash of clove honey for sweetness and a pinch of rye for body builds a light but charismatic malt profile. Hop notes are faded grassy, floral and herbal, very mild by comparison. Yeast and water characteristics are very diverse, expect mild mineral water notes, mellow esters, a moderate diacetyl note with the malt bill, some may add complexity, others may be unpleasantries to the style. Balance is slightly sweet over bitter with an expected amplified body. Potency is mild/medium. 3.25

(Taste) The flavor showcases a cleaner, better rounded out drinking experience. Malt profile is consists of hints of pilsner malt, a mild pale malt, a touch of wheat for texture and thickness, and a very mild biscuit and rye character. The hop profile is strikingly bitter, notes of grassy, floral and resinous varieties provide a substantial bitterness to pair with the malt body and yet keeps a low profile on bold hop flavor. There's a density of characters that remain accessible and highly drinkable without the expected lightness that most Pilsner Beers carry, expect some alcohol in tow. Altogether, the beer is much better balanced and less alarmingly sweet than the aroma predicted. A potent bitter resin drags out the dry finish. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is mildly chewy, slick, very lightly syrupy yet clean. Carbonation keeps a low profile and adds a touch of muted creaminess, perhaps underwhelming the potential that this beer could have with a more decided texture in mind. Body is medium+ for an Imperial Pilsner, and medium overall. Alcohol presence is medium, perhaps too out-in-the-open by a very light specialty malt profile. Finishes dry with a touch of esters and sharp hop resins. 3.25

(Overall) Terrapin pieces together an Imperial Pilsner that doesn't bring too much new to the table, and some conflicts with the aroma and mouthfeel of this beer may hamper the enjoyability of this beer overall. It's a bolder alternative to it's light-bodied younger brother but manages to keep a decent drinkability, even though it might not be the ideal thirst quencher you were looking for. Enjoy this beer as fresh as possible for the best results. 3.5
