Notes: This Baltic Porter gives off a roasty aroma with hints of vanilla and chicory. Notes of dark fruits on the tongue give way to a dry smokey finish that lingers with each sip.

Look: Beautiful beer. Opaque pitch black with a single finger tan head.

Smell: Savory, smoky, a slight hint of fruit. Strong malts.

Taste: Similar to smell. Slightly bitter coffee aftertaste

Feel: Very smooth. Perfect amount of carbonation.

Overall this is a great beer. Fantastic dark beer from a brewing company that usually specializes in hoppy beers

Terrapin Beer Co. "Smoke On The Porter - Side Project 28"
12 fl. oz. can, "Vintage 2016"
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, this is really dark. The head is a very dark tan, brown even, over a completely opaque black body. Ahhh, the nose is smokey, and roasty with some dark bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is more complex, bringing in some apple-like fruitiness, some raisin and fig, a bit of soft French roast coffee, a straightforward graininess, and some almost-burnt sugar. It's less chocolatey, and certainly less roasty than I thought it would be given the aroma - perhaps I've imagined roastiness based on the charred character of the smoke. I can't figure out what they've used for that either. I get some Beechwood, but also what could be peat - it could really be anything though, a blend, well, not Hickory, but you get the idea. Ahh, I could even see some hickory in there as well if it is a blend, although that's probably the fruitiness throwing me off. Mostly I get Beechwood. Unfortunately the head has not held, and it's not left any lacing behind. Oh well. The flavor also delivers some oak, and mild vanilla as it warms a bit. Ahh, and some black licorice as well. It's not that bitter, but it still finishes dry. Medium-full in body with a velvety smooth moderate carbonation that at least partially explains the limited head retention. Mmmmm! As a fan of smoked beers I have to say I'm liking this a lot. And I think as a Baltic porter it's right on as well. Is it really 8.5%? I don't find the alcohol at all. All in all, very nice. It's nicely balanced, nicely rounded, and the smoke and oak deliver without going too far over the edge.

Pours pretty darn black not light sneaking around the edges when held to my light. A big dense foamy head that is a touch darker then tan falls slow and laces well.

Aroma is malty, with good smoke notes, vanilla and oak underneath. Some light chocolate and earth notes mingled into the mix under the malt kind of dry smelling maybe the oak if that makes sense.

Taste is like the nose good malty base, good chocolate notes with good smokiness without being over done. Finishes out with vanilla and oak hints along with some earthy tones almost peat like but may just be the smoke. Finish is dry also lingering earthy notes and coffee bitterness.

Mouthfeel seems a touch light for the style but its smooth and easy to drink so hard to knock it for that.

Overall I found this one to be enjoyable and would buy it again. Seems like a several people aren't digging it just means more for the rest of us I guess.

A - Dark brown/borderline black colored pour with thick, creamy head sitting on top.

S - Dark roasted cocoa, creme, and light smokiness.

T - Smoke, char, cocoa creme, roasted malt, delicate vanilla, wood plank (yes, I actually said that, it actually does resemble Beechwood), and peat.

M - Full body and dry on the back of the tongue with a little bit of thinness at the very, very end.

O - This aged quite well. No alcohol presence whatsoever. Enjoying.

Black in color with no penetration to light. There's a fingernail of brown on top. The aroma is a heavenly blend of smoked malt and oak. I'm tasting a very subtle blend of oak and dark malt. The mouth is thick and viscous.

Except for Alaskan Smoked Porter, this is the best smoked beer I have had. Pours a very dense brown color from a 12 oz can with no light coming through. Big frothy khaki head with better than average retention and thin bands of lacing. Aroma and flavor are smoked malt, coffee, chocolate and a little oak bitterness. The flavor is outstanding. Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. The 8.5 abv is hardly noticeable. An excellent smoked beer.

A thanks to the bad ass of baltic porters, woodychandler, for this beer. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts, chocolate. Taste is smokey, roasted malts, chocolate, hops are present, some licorice. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

On the bottom of the can, written in very light yellow writing on a silver can: "16455-459.4 VINTAGE 2016 1723"

Appearance: A massive rocky brown head forms on the pour. It stays up there too. The body is an oily black. Normally this much head would be praise-worthy but it it way too much for a porter. Still it looks great in a glass.

Aroma: Smoked bacon aroma. It accomplished what it set out to smell like but it didn't bring anyone to the party.

Taste: It has this incredibly strong burnt rubber...taste...if the scent of burnt rubber was turned into a flavor. It has this plastic flavor and a strong lingering acrid bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It gets harder to drink the more I sip.

Overall: This beer doesn't hold a candle to any other smoked beer you can find on the market. If you enjoy porters or stouts in general then do yourself a favor and stay away. If you enjoy Rauchbier then don't poison your palate with this beer. Normally I would highly recommend against drinking this beer but this is the kind of beer I would post caution tape around. The can says it is made "with beechwood smoked malt and aged on French Oak." It is not only completely devoid of nuance but it conjures flavors of rubber and plastic. I would never chance drinking this again.

Not a bad base Porter, but they must have used rubber tires for the smoke source. A very off tasting stringent flavor to the smokiness. Whatever wood they used for smoking, I would suggest an alternative wood for next brewing.

12oz can poured into a snifter

A- pours a deep black with a think foamy khaki colored head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- smoky peat, rubber tires, campfire, ash, light coffee, charred wood

T- plenty of smoke up front with notes of smoked peat, rubber, ash, campfire & chocolate. Mid-palate gives more chocolate and a hint of coffee. The finish is more smoke and rubber tire

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel and finish

O- nice smoked notes throughout, tends to get a little rubbery at times though

A 12oz can with vintage 2016 dated, but not other date that I can tell. Regardless it just came out

L - Pitch black, with 1 finger of head and lots of lacing left on top of the brew

S - Smoke, coal, yet sweet chocolate also prevalent.

T - Chocolate, oak, smoked malts. Balanced well together. Smooth

F - Medium body and lighter carbonation

O - A good barrel aged smoked porter. Moderately sweet, but not overly. Moderately smoky and oaky, but not over done. Definitely worth grabbing another

Smoke, ash, and chocolate dominate this one with a nice bitterness in there as well. Very dark color with a body on the heavy side of medium. Goes down smoothly
