Appearance: Wimpy fizzy yellow with outstanding carbonation. Thin white head that recedes quickly leaving some lacing.

Smell: Too spicy. Clove? Corriander? Pepper? Whatever, it sucks.

Taste: Like a homeade brew with a bad infection. Really bad.

Mouthfeel: Mostly water but I can feel a tiny hop bite. Very very tiny. And I want to spit it out because swallowing may not be an option.

Drinkability: Possibly if I'm absolutely desperate.

bottle marked best by 3rd week of december. so it should be pretty fresh.
bright straw colored, and fairly clear for a wheat beer. little head. smells of wheat bread, honey, and some citrus. taste includes the typical bannana flavor and herbal spices, but overall the flavor is off putting. mouthfeel is thin, with higher carbonation.

wheat beers are not my favorite style, but even so, this seems below average for the style.

The color was pretty hazy like most Hefeweizen brews. This could have been a little bit better aon most levels I thought. Strong flavors of banana in the brew. it's ok if thats what you like. The mouthfeel wasn't too bad had the smoothness of a beer this style should have.

Received as an extra from AdamBear, thanks!! Drank 2 months prior to the "enjoy by" date on the bottle.

A: hazy opaque, and very full orange/yellow honey color. wild head that fizzes like crazy, then immediately dissipates leaving the beer looking flat and lifeless in the glass. (retains a slight ring around the edge and leaves a limp lace that quickly slides back down into the beer)

S: A lot of citrus, wheat, and sweet honey. Smells pretty rich and summery. Honestly I probably wouldn't have mentioned honey if the bottle didn't mention it. (It's very subtle)

T: Someone else mentioned bubblegum and bananas. That's perfect. Plus of course the same smells mentioned above. The problem is that the taste is not as rich or strong as the smell would suggest. Tastes almost watered down to me. It does leave a pleasant "banana bread" aftertaste that lingers for quite a while.

M: As it looks, it feels flat in the mouth.

O: Not a bad beer, but not a standout either. I probably wouldn't recommend this or drink it again as there are many better summer wheat beers out there. And what's supposed to be unique about this ("brewed with honey") doesn't really add much complexity or even stand out as being very noticeable in this beer. I would drink this ice cold on a hot summer day before I'd touch a BMC hands down though!!

I can’t really tell what the color is. Strange. Not yellow. It’s yellowish. And cloudy. Alas, zero head. I’m not happy with the color and I’m really unhappy that there’s no head.
Smells of bananas, cloves and bubblegum.
Somewhat light, somewhat refreshing. A lot like a macro-lager, really. A sweet corn syrupy thing going on. Some cloves. A little citrus spice.
Kind of weird and I can’t say that I really like it. Too much like a macro lager. A little cloying in the mouth.

Terrapin SunRay Wheat Beer
Terrapin Beer Company
Style: Hefeweizen

bottle>pint glass

Looked more like a macro lager than a hefe. Semi clear golden honey/light caramel in color.
1 finger head that does not last long, with a nominal lace ring if any.

Smells of sweet malts, minor citrus and spice notes. Possibly some banana.

Tastes as it smells. Wheat/honey/spice/a dash of hop... in that order. Overall I would describe the taste as a "watered down sweet hefe with a generous dose of honey".

Mouthfeel is thin and high carbonation.

This is not a good rep of the Hefe style in my opinion. It's more of a spicy American Wheat (forgive the irony). Calling it a hefe is a stretch, and it's definelty not the best offering from Terrapin. If you like a sweet wheta beer this is for you, if not try something else if you have the option. I will not buy this one again.

I did not like Gamma Ray. I dont like Sunray. I do like wheat beers... but Terrapin has not impressed me yet. I will keep trying as they are semi local with a good rep, but I dont think they have the wheat stlye down from what I have experienced to date....

Bought this on my recent trip to Atlanta, poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a goldenish yellow, cloudy, active carbonation, and a half a finger of white foam.

S - Get a slight wheat smell, some orange and surprisingly some banana.

T - I mostly get banana and cloves flavors like in a wit pretty weird, anyway I also get some orange and wheat.

M - Pretty oily and slick, light to medium bodied.

D - I don't think this beer knows what it is, it is wheat but tastes and smells like a wit, it is ok, but glad I only bought a single.

Poured from a bottle into a Chimay goblet.

A- pours a pale, slightly cloudy yellow with a paper thin white head...fades quickly. Lots of bubbles. Looks almost like ginger ale. THAT is not appetizing when I'm looking to have some tasty alcohol

S- hardly anything. Hints of...maybe lemon. Thats all. VERY disappointing

T- hey look, we've got something. Mild banana flavor. Some hints of lemon in there. Tastes like a hefeweizen...just a watered down one.

M- thin. Carbonated as hell.

D- its drinkable...just because its so light. It tastes like...I dunno, soda that has alcohol in it? Just because its drinkable doesn't mean I'd buy it again...this COULD be decent on a hot summer day chilling by the pool, but thats all really.

A so so wheat ale. Everything about this beer was average. The aroma was stale malt with some grass, a hint of skunk and beer. Pour was a medium gold with a thin off white ring for a head with no bubbles. Taste was too malty for a wheat ale. Stale light malt with a wheaty bite and just slight carbonation

Served from a freshly tapped keg about 1 hour from brewery.

For the most part, I don't care for the hefeweizen style, and this beer is no exception. To a good extent, I've tried to allow for that in this review, largely comparing this beer against other hefeweizens.

A: Typical for style: clear golden with a short-lived white head that leaves a dash of lace.

S: Rather floral and fruity (banana), but primarily wheat.

T: Again, typical for style, but with a bit more sweetness and fruitiness.

M: light body, as expected

O: not enjoyable, although I am sure I'd be happy to have another if I was very thirsty on a hot summer day.

12oz bottle into stange-like water glass (not at my house).

Cloudy golden orange hue with a two finger white head with a little bit of tan color where the yeast went through.

Tart wheat aromas set a base for the string citrusyness with a little bit of clove.

A little bit of banana is in there, but the flavor seems to have a lot of spice and clove. A little bit of mild orange (the fruit, not the color) flavors are in there. Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Certainly not close to a true hefe weizen, but closer to an American Pale Wheat Ale. Either way it's not the best I've had. The creamy banana was on the low end and there was a little too much spiciness.

Thin white head, quickly disapated
cloudy straw gold hue.

Light candied banana aromas, similar to circus peanuts

Fairly thin watery body. Off dry with low hop bittering, but a fair bite on the back palate. Mild flavors of banana.

Fairly boring, but maybe a nice summer quaffer.

Got in a variety pack with 4 different Terrapin brews. Drank from a 12 oz bottle in a pint glass. Swirled the sediment into beer. Head was not very thick and did not last. Very pale yellow, cloudy.

The smell was typical wheat. Citrus, maybe specifically lemon.

The taste was quite muted. A little watered down in comparison to other wheats. It wasn't anything new. Citrusy. Very light on the hops. Medium bodied. Wouldn't choose this over very many wheats.

Vigorous pour into a weizen glass yields a pure-white three-finger fading head over a cloudy pale-amber body. Pretty, with a lot of lacing. Surprising.

Smell is mild on all points. In fact, hardly any smell at all. Hints of grass, hay, and a tiny bit of citrus. Hmm. Disappointing. It looks so nice.

Taste follows the smell. Not much here. Certainly nothing unpleasant, just nothing. Like Alka-Seltzer or plain carbonated water. I don't know how to rate it, 'cuz it's pretty taste-less: inoffensive.

Mouthfeel is, in a word, thin. Indeed, pretty watery. Very surprising in view of the ample lacing.

Drinkability is like seltzer-water: very easy. But the question is, why?

I can't rate this TOO low, because it's not BAD. The problem is that it's just not much of anything.

Poured into a pint glass on 10/2/10

Best if enjoyed by the 2nd week of November

Straw & golden pineapple in color with a modest haziness. Though initially slow to rise, over one finger of foam was manifest. Head retention is pretty thin. Basically no lace.

Aromas of wheat, honey, floral hops, earthy grassiness & a very faint yeasty undertone.

SunRay tastes very similar to how it smells. Honey is only slightly more apparent than the wheat, though the two are reasonably balanced. Not particularly sweet. Grassy flavors & earthy hops. Mild toastiness.

Though still fairly light in general, the feel is maybe a bit heavier than I'd expect (maybe the honey is the reason). There's a coating feeling after each drink. Carbonation seems on point for the style.

Drinkability is ok. It certainly seems like an average take on the style, though the honey adds something akin to intrigue, I suppose. Tastes decent enough, but that coating feel is weird.

Super light and super refreshing. Not very carbonated with subtle flavors of orange and honey. Perfect for a sweaty summer day when you need an alcoholic thirst quencher that wont weigh you down in the slightest.

Its definitely not anything fancy but in a world of heavy happy craft brews, this is a refreshing replacement for summer.

A: Bright lemon peel on the pour showcases a ton of effervesce both sticking on the glass walls and rising rapidly at a seltzer like pace. The head was a bit disappointing, micro-fizzy, turning washy then dissipating in a near blink of the eye. Really lacks incentive appearance wise.

S: Semi-dry oranges, light and tart, are combined with some dry wheat. A bit of starchy citrus follows up but is hardly impressionable. The strength is rather light and probably would of just hurt the rating had it had some more ummph.

T: Decent bite upfront of semi-tart oranges and wheat. Light tart grapefruit hops come in wet and of moderate strength. The oranges get a bit bright and bold on the finish along with some lemon and lime character on the swallow. Buttered wheat and honey, which is way over used, cheapens the overall effect here making this unbearably sweet and macro-like at times. To much honey takes away from the style.

M: A good deal of fizziness on the hold, light bodied with some edgy roughness as a result.

D: Not my first go to as a summer time wheat quencher, to macro-like and appears that was its intent. The honey truly is overplayed here, cheapens the wheat presence and makes this buttery sweet void of enjoyment. A six-pack is a waste. Average enjoyment and tweener beer.

12oz bottle to weizen glass.
Not a whole lot of visual appeal for a hefe. Cloudy straw color with a smallish head cap that dissapates quickly. Looks a little lifeless. With a little banana and clove, the smell is pleasant but doesn't pull you in. Taste is good but a little one dimensional. The yeast never really takes control of the palate like many hefeweizens. Light in body with a good refreshing element to it. Very mild version that would be great for a BBQ or baseball game.

Dark hazy golden colored wheat beer. A little bit more hazy than most wheat beers. Pretty weak head that goes away quickly. Carbonation is sort of a dribble going up. Not the most impressive looking but the bottle looks cool. Smell is mostly wheat with a little bit of citrus. Citrus is pretty faint thought. Taste is full of wheat with also jsut a little bit of citrus. Its an average wheat beer and no tastes are very strong. Light bodied and little carbonation. It's a light hefeweizen so that's good if you want to drink a lot but if you are having one with a meal then I'd go for one with more flavor.

looks good. cloudy golden-orange with a greenish neon tint. nice. laces and fluffs up then it all slides down. fast.

there are other wheat beers that just do all this yeasty/banana stuff. whatever this type is, i just don't like it. i like the 'banana' ester notes in the upper shelf jack daniels whiskies...but not here. don't care for much of anything about it. the only thing that makes me stomach these is IF i happen to have a big bar of dark chocolate on hand...

i am sure it's decent to most Hefe-fans, but i can't finish this. well, i'll hold my nose and extract the alcohol...what little is there.

A: clear pale yellow, trace head, no lacing

S: wheat, light floral, yeast

T: sweet wheat, floral, mild yeast, earthy dry finish

M: light/med, tongue prick crisp, dry mouth

O: Little disappointed. Loved my 1st Terrapin,
so was very excited to try more of their brews.
This hefeweizen is too light needs more work
on the flavor. A step above BMC beers.

Appearance - Served in a brown bottle. Love the logo (a turtle [terrapin] in a purple hat on a sunflower with a piece of straw hanging out of his mouth). Foggy orangey-gold. Slight sediment. 1/2 finger of head that most fades quickly.

Smell - Banana, fruity, clove

Taste - Very sweet up front. Gives way to a fruit flavor. Tart aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Crisp, cool, thin.

Drinkability - A good summer beer. Not the best, but refreshing and easy to drink.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a clear pint glass. Best by date notched on side of label. Single purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $1.70.

A: Barely hazy golden-range with disappointingly thin white head that left no lace.

S: Aromas are like a half-hefe -- banana, clove, and tart lemon but all weaker than average and more in line with a pale wheat ale.

T: Flavor is not bad in the early going with sweet honey, wheat tang, light banana esters, and clove that is pretty steely. However, in the middle and finish there is a mineral graininess that doesn't belong and that really hurts the flavor.

M: Too light for a hefeweizen as it doesn't provide the creaminess of the good German and American versions (see Paulaner, Weihenstephaner, Victory). The carbonation is too high and more in line with the pale wheat ale style as well.

D: As a hefeweizen, this brew is subpar and seems watered down and overcarbonated. As an American pale wheat ale, it would be very serviceable and above-average. Terrapin just needs to decide which one they are going for and commit.

Pours an almost opaque amber with thin fast fading white head, very little lace off of a vigorous pour. If I poured most hefes like this, I'd have a glass of foam. Smell: grainy, husky even, with a little banana and little more clove. Taste: a good amount of clove, a good does of sweetness, honey-like sugaryness kicks in towards the end of the sip and lasts through the finish. Mouthfeel: sharp carbonation upfront, almost seltzer like, and then it's gone halfway through the sip. Missing the creamy texture of a good hefe. Not a good hefe, but not bad for a summer beer.
