From what I can remember from having this beer I liked it. It has been a long time since I had this beer, but I do remember that I liked it. So far every Terrapin beer that I have tried I have liked. I wish that they did not retire this beer, because I would go have another one if they did not retire it.

Terrapin Beer Company's Sunray Wheat Beer is a Hefeweizen style ale brewed with Tupelo Honey from the Savannah Bee Company. As of 2012, the beer is retired with no plans of a return in the future. I found a single six pack of this at a seedy gas station right down the road from the brewery for $7.99, which is an attractive price for Terrapin's beer nowadays. Despite this bottle being 2011 vintage and having a freshness date of Week 2, August 2011, my previous review of this beer warrants a follow up.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to my Terrapin Pint Glass. Served at º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp but thin fizzy head that dissolves almost immediately, indicative of age, leaving a largely clear surface save for some carbonation activity in the center of the glass. Body color is a golden yellow, very mildly hazy. Relaxed carbonation is sparse. Aside from the poor head quality, the rest of the beer looks decent. 2.5

(Smell) In comparison with other Hefeweizens I have had recently, the clove is nearly nonexistent in this beer and the banana yeast notes play the dominant role, bringing this a bit closer to the german style than others of its class. Banana bread muffins are paired with a bit of faded honey on a slightly musty wheat background, but not a bit of it is unpleasant smelling. It's a mild but enjoyable aroma overall. 3.5

(Taste) The front has a subtle hint of honey in the mouth with a slight banana pairing. The finish is where the clove, bitter orange and honey peeks in, the clove only in small doses and the honey with a much larger emphasis. In the end it's a mishmash of all flavors altogether, culminating a very tasty balanced session beer. The taste has remained surprisingly well-preserved for the past year, but I can imagine that this would be even better if consumed fresh. Overall, the beer is very approachable and drinkable with a decent balance of flavors and a limited spice finish, making this a easy-drinking Hefeweizen. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture segues from a very slick front to a tongue-tickling crisp texture on the finish. It would probably be better to boost the front carbonation a bit but the finish carbonation is at its limit for me, really accentuating the spices in the flavor. Body is light. Alcohol presence is low. Overall a good pairing. 4

(Overall) I'm finding it even more important to go back to beers previously dismissed and give them a second shot down the road. It's been nearly 2 years since I last had this beer and the first time I didn't enjoy it so much. Now I've found a penchant for enjoying Hefeweizens locally and from abroad, and this one certainly is a delicious and highly drinkable beer. The honey does little to interfere with the flavors and taste, instead accentuating an already enjoyable flavor while adding complexity. Good luck finding this beer around the south, but I'll have you know that it's still damn tasty. 3.5

Tasted last summer - reviewed from notes that were lost, but recently found.

Pours hazed straw yellow with a fluffy white head. Some strands of lacing stick.

The smell is of honey with a wheat tang.

The taste is of sweet honey with some wheat tang and bready dryness in the finish.

The feel, in my opinion is the best part of the brew. It is velvety smooth and yet crisp. Certainly "refreshing".

Not really a Hefeweizen in my opinion, but an American Pale Wheat with the characteristics of the former. Anyway, it's not a bad summer refreshing brew, though a bit too heavy on the honey sweetness for me to put into my summer regular lineup.

single finger frothy white head with some lacing on top of a cloudy golden body. Aroma is very fruity with lemon, banana and orange. A wheat mustiness of course as well. Flavor is more citrus with an earthy note but sadly is a bit watered down. Light bodied and highly carbonated. Not a bad wheat beer overall. Just a little too watery in the flavor otherwise it would be one of the better ones out there.

picked this up in NC a few days ago. poured into a weizen glass.

a - brew poured a cloudy murky golden orange with a thin white bubbly head. beer comes alive with some swirls and has slimey lacing that slowly slides down the glass.

s - burst of tropical fruit leading with banana, bubblegum, honey, vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and butter. very sweet smelling. a wheaty sweet, not a candy sweet.

t - flavor mimics the nose. banana, bubblegum and honey. lots of vanilla and biscuitiness to it. lots of orange peel as well.

m - a bit fizzy. cooling. cloying.

o - overall this is a style that i'm not wild about in general, but for a hefe, this one is pretty good. the sweetness is a bit overwhelming at first, but i did get used to it.

Pours a fairly clear dark straw with just a wisp of white head.

Smells of bubblegum with hints of banana and clove.

Heavy pink bubblegum flavor up front. Rounds into a little bit of spiciness and clove in the finish.

Fairly light with good carbonation.

I'm a fan of bubblegum/banana flavors that are light on the clove so this hefe is balanced well for me. Still not terribly great flavors. Good, but not outstanding.

[Edit] After posting this, realized reviews aren't great so want to add that ironically this is the first Terrapin beer that I've thought was better than I expected. Usually find their brews underwhelming.

A: clear pale yellow, trace head, no lacing

S: wheat, light floral, yeast

T: sweet wheat, floral, mild yeast, earthy dry finish

M: light/med, tongue prick crisp, dry mouth

O: Little disappointed. Loved my 1st Terrapin,
so was very excited to try more of their brews.
This hefeweizen is too light needs more work
on the flavor. A step above BMC beers.

Poured into a weizen glass.

A - Hazy pear colored brew that appears to be unfiltered. Thinner head than I like to see on a hefe, but some washy lace was apparent.

S - Bubble gum and bananas. Doesn't smell too artificial, which sometimes seems to happen with the bubble gum aromas.

T - Banana phenol, citrus, lemon peel, more bubble gum all make up the body. Somewhat like the German style, but a little heavy on the gum.

M - Thin bodied with a sharp carbonation level. Finishes slightly watery. The low point of the brew I must say.

D - Refreshing and overall pretty tasty. Serviceable for an American hefeweizen.

Poured into a pint glass.

Hazy dark gold with one finger head.

Smells of banana bread and a little clove.

Banana bread, a little citrus and just the right amount of bitterness in the finish.

Crisp and light in the mouth with medium carbonation. Finishes with a dry note.

Nice, light crisp beer for a hot afternoon.

Super light and super refreshing. Not very carbonated with subtle flavors of orange and honey. Perfect for a sweaty summer day when you need an alcoholic thirst quencher that wont weigh you down in the slightest.

Its definitely not anything fancy but in a world of heavy happy craft brews, this is a refreshing replacement for summer.

Poured into a stange glass, it's a hazy golden color with a finger so of bubbly white head. I like the haze this one has to it, but the head is weak.

The aroma is grassy with hints of banana and citrus. Pretty typical Hefeweizen aroma.

The taste is more of the same, with strong banana notes dominating the palate.

It's a solid hefe, nothing spectacular but an easy drinking summer beer.

I am a sucker for Terrapin beer. Poured a bottle into my trusty pint glass. Not any sort of amazing spectacle but looks like the typical wheat beer. No head clear yellow liquid but nice streams of carbonation rising to the occasion. Smells like a wheat field light summery scents coming from this one. Light crisp flavor wheat notes. This is a perfect summer beer flavor and ABV is light enough to session all night. Carbonation creates a refreshing mouthfeel. Pleasing for sure nice beer for spring/summer would buy this again for sure.

Poured from bottle into a glass, best before the third week of august (finally a company that actually notches their best by date!)

A- Beautiful honey gold beer! however no head tiny constant ring of carbonation is all no lace.

S- faint scent, mild banana clove yeasty scent some grain.

T- Very balanced starts on the usual hefeweizen yeasty clovey banana flavors cut through by a citric tang and some hop. sweetness balances from the honey without being a honey tasting beer.

M- Crisp from solid carbonation that becomes soft on the palate, also some tangy lemon gives a good finish to the sip aiding the lower alcohol.

O- Usually i find Hefeweizens heavier on the stomach but this is light and a perfect choice for their summer seasonal brew. 4.5% abv is also good for drinking outside in the summer heat. i would definitely get a 6 pack next summer when they brew it up again.

Poured a pale golden yellow color with quite a bit of head on it.

Smell was on the lighter side - some banana and citrus aroma.

Taste is pretty good. Typical hefeweizen flavor with more of the citurs coming through.

Mouthfeel is light and bubbley. This beer went down very smooth and easy.

Overall a pretty decent beer. I would drink it again but won't go out of my way to get it.

I haven't been into wheat beers, but this one is great!! Only downer to me is the low ABV of only 4% which practically makes it a "lite" beer.

A: Pale gold to yellow, pure white head which dies quickly, little to no lacing on the glass.

S: A sweet smell, strong with honey, cloves vanilla.

T: BANANA BREAD!!! Big on the bananas, honey, vanilla. Slight wheat flavor too. No alcohol taste at all. No bitterness, finishes with a combo of honey, vanilla and hemp rope.

Overall: I really like this very drinkable beer!! Price is low, but quality is very high. I highly recommend this for a cold, summer treat!!

A - Cloudy golden straw color with some bubbles and a head that disappears quick.

S - I get banana and bubble gum with some wheat and yeast in the background.

T - I get a lot of banana and bubble gum, pretty tasty, a little wheat taste in there as well.

M - Light body, could use a touch more carbonation or alcohol actually. Extremely easy to drink.

O - I'm not much of a wheat beer guy but this one is pretty good. Great for a summer day!

Honestly, this one keeps sneaking past me when I think of Wheat beers I like. And, I guess in fairness, that's not exactly my wheelhouse anyway.

Not that I don't like them, but rather I don't typically reach for them.

This one seems to be a fine enough example of the style and basically does what it's supposed to. Even if it doesn't exactly thrill me in any particular way.

I could use with a bit more brightness but it's an otherwise well made beer.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Bruery tulip glass.

A- Hazy gold with an orange hue. Poured aggressively that forms a two finger head that dissipates quickly and leaves a thin white cap. No sign of lacing.

S- Banana, clove, vanilla, honey, spice, wheat and a bit of nuttiness. Reminds me of banana bread.

T- Similar to the smell with banana, clove, vanilla, honey and some peppery spice.

M- Light to medium carbonation and body. This is probably the biggest letdown of the beer with a watered down mouthfeel that is a bit too light.

O- Another nice offering from Terrapin and could easily drink a few of these during the summer. A pleasant and refreshing brew, with the only big issue being the mouthfeel.

WOW!! This beer has taken me by surprise. This is probably only my third wheat beer ever but I think it happens to be one of the best beers I have ever tried. The appearance is dark in color with lots of carbonation. Smell is very sweet! The taste is beyond explanation you just have to try it!

A generally standard summer beer. Light, sweet and crip with citrus undertones. But where it stands apart is that it is a hefeweizen disguised as a summer season, which gives it a bit more of a weight to it going down. Makes summer ales look weak, but doesn't overwhelm and is very refreshing.

Had this on 2011-07-09 in Columbia, PA

A - Hazy straw with a 1/2-finger head into a pint glass and no lacing.

S - Big, bold banana and clove

T - Like the smell with lots of banana and clove with some apple and grass. There's a fair amount of sweetness and no bitterness.

M - Light-medium body and high carbonation. Pretty effervescent.

O - I enjoyed this brew. The flavors are bold. Reminded me of the Sierra Nevada's Beer Camp Weizenbock

A: The color is clody yellowish with medium-sized white head. Not very consistent lacing.

S: The aromas of clove, banana and citrus are present. Quite nice overall smell.

T: Wheat with hints of citrus and banana. Clove also comes in. Orange zest toward the end with some light candied sugars. Some grassy hops as well.

M: The feel in the mouth is light and refreshing. Medium-bodied and decent amount of carbonation.

O: One of the best offerings from Terrapin. It is a very good summer beer.

From my weekend notes: Pours a hazy gold with a nonexistent head. Smells appealing, though, with crisp grass and citrus notes, plus a solid hefe background. Doesn’t start out with a sugary blitz, letting the traditional bananas and cloves do their thing. But the finish is pure Tupelo honey, thick and ultrasweet and overpowering. This beer tries to pull off something cool and complex, yet ends up a sweet, syrupy mess. Feels too slack, meaning the sugary fade sticks around forever.

Bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Pours a hazy golden color with a fizzy head that is more or less reminiscent of traditional wheats.

S: Aroma is ridiculous: grains, oranges, graham cracker, and honey, it’s sweet and brisk. I could probably just smell this beer and be satisfied. I’d drink it through my nose if I could.

T/M: Has medium carbonation with a malty bitterness, crisp hay similar to a saison and a bit of lemon. The flavor is more subdued than the aroma and not a sweet as it makes you think, but it’s still a good all around beer and a great wheat beer.

This is my new go-to wheat beer. Too bad it’s not available in my area.

First had on draft at 909 in Fredericksburg, Virginia; appropriately enough, a partly Grateful Dead themed bar. Loved it there so I grabbed some bottles to drink and review.

Pours a very hazy, but bright golden yellow. Almost looks like honey in appearance. Not a lot of carbonation going on, but still yields about a finger's worth of white head. Poor retention and very little lacing, leaving only a faint ring as the foam quickly dissipates. Disappointingly, this one is lacking what is essential to a serious Hefe, a massive and voluptuously frothy head.

Nose is full of wheat, banana, clove, bubblegum, and faint honey. For a beer whose label proclaims honey as its differentiator, I was hoping it would be much more in my face. Still a decent aroma however.

Tastes as the preceding aromas would suggest. Lots of upfront Hefe flavors, particularly a incredibly strong banana presence. Honey is noticeable as well, contributing a bit more mild sweetness in the middle, before it finishes off nice and biscuity. Overall, it almost reminds me of a banana pancake. Pretty good stuff.

Mouthfeel is a bit of a let down. A little too light bodied for what I like to see in the style. Needs more carbonation and creaminess to accompany the taste.

Overall, this is a pretty decent offering. The flavors are right on and quite delicious, but some more carbonation and a creamier body would take this to the upper tier of Hefes.
