Pours a brownish red with a finger of off-white head that did not enjoy much retention. Hop qualities are certainly present in the nose. The flavor profile starts with malty sweetness (the sweetness could also be attributed to the mild vanilla notes) and then gives way to the hop bitterness. There is certainly a slight alcohol burn on the finish, but it is not terribly unpleasant. The oak aging appears to have smoothed out the alcohol bite, but it may also have muted the hop profile.

2013 Vintage.

A- Double pint glass pours from the 12oz bottle with a murky brown appearance. Creamy, off-white head forms to about two fingers with nice retention. Supremely thick lace ring at the top followed by webs drizzling down below that.

S- Like a Barleywine off the top with big, semi-aged caramel and notes of oak beyond that. Hops come into play a bit with some citrus and pine. A touch of tropical fruit.

T- Oak essence extract bonanza. Somehow this takes oak chip flavors to a new level. The wood overshadows other good elements. Caramel malts, toasted nutty hints and spicy yeast raisin notes. Hops try to counter the oak but are kind of contrasted too much by it. Hops bring citrus rind, pine and slight tropical.

MF- Low-moderate carbonation level in a medium bodied brew. Some nice creaminess with the carbonation and it finishes with oak and hop bitterness lingering on the palate.

Too much oak. It seems to waver off with some sips but overshadows the rest of the beer a ton. Decent hop flavors but oak oak oak.

2013 bottle

pours a dark amber with a a nice head. the smell is hoppy but the oak is there too..hmm, interesting. the taste is extremely smooth. starts out with a good amount of sweetness but not overwhelmingly so.. the hops come in a bit on the back but arent too big either. the oak is very apparent but not dominating. the sweetness doesnt linger and its just smooth all around. a well crafted beer. medium bodied with mild carbonation.

overall im impressed. quite good.

A - Dark orange brown color. Poured an awesome creamy 2 finger head. Dissipated to thin layer of cream on top. Great lacing.

S- Wow. Tropical fruit, caramel, chocolate, BIG Oak, vanilla, and a touch of pine. Subtle Scotch. Very inviting.

T- Super sweet intro that morphs into flavors mentioned above. Complex and very well balanced. Booze isn't hidden, but adds a rich caramel meets licorice flavor.

M- Thick body. Crisp carbonation. Oily finish.

O- I am impressed. And a bit buzzed. 10.3% sneaks up on you. This is a wonderful beer. Super complex and incredibly balanced. Flavors all over the map. A hoppy, malty, Imperial Red Ale spiked with the luscious tastes, smells, and feel of a good Scotch. I really can't say enough. I will definitely have again.
