Terrapin Beer Co. "Rye Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. can, coded "170782 8.24.17" and sampled on 9.03.17
$2 @ Weis, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Great graphics on the can with a turtle playing the banjo in a field of grain. The label lists it at 5.5% ABV. It's poured a mostly clear deep gold/amber body beneath a short head of off-white foam but the head has run off before I even got to this point. It's malty and some rye is clear in the nose. Floral as well. But where are these promised Amarillo hops though? Ahh, I spoke too soon, there's some orange and light grapefruit in there. They're not bold, but the blend is nice. I like that you can smell the rye, and I'd rather have that than citrusy hops - citrusy hops you can get anywhere these days! On to the flavor, it's similar with more of the orange flavor stepping forward. The rye is clear from start to finish, but mainly in the finish. It's lightly spicy and it helps to balance the lightly sweetish and grainy malt all the way across the palate. A median bitterness balances it, and it finishes with a touch of residual malt that fades to allow the orange and spice to show, and then reappears lingering gently. It's definitely a rye beer, but it's not overly spicy or biting. Nicely done! Really nicely balanced. Medium bodied and gently crisp. An interesting twist on an American pale ale. Unfortunately the lack of head retention and lacing hurt it. Is that perhaps because of the rye? If that's the case maybe I should give it some leniency.

This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice somewhat light transparent to somewhat hazy pale brown color leading to light tinges of orange coloring along the sides of the glass. There was a decent light lacing sliding right on into the beer. The smell had a faded sort of rye note to it along with a light floral yet somewhat spiciness. The taste was a combination of the previously mentioned flavors. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body and had a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed fairly good for the style and for me as it was harsh but not overly done. Overall, in my opinion, this was a good Rye Beer I’d have again.

Can poured into pint glass; deep Amber color, nice head that falls away. Malts and hops are nice. Easy on the palate, light hops, well balanced. Light bodied - an enjoyable beer.

Bottle to pint glass.

AROMA: Bready, grassy and some light hops whiffs.
LOOK: Cloudy Dark Yellowish Color, Small head.
TASTE: Rye is apparent and balanced well with the hops.
FEEL: Light bodied, medium carbonation.

Really enjoying this, very tasty for a pale ale. Packs a punch of flavor.
