I was completely thrown off by the taste of this beer...I was expecting something much different, maybe something to do with rye...
A: Pours a nice golden color that leaves a small head with decent retention

S: Very nice aroma on this one, perhaps the best aspect of the beer. Hops are present, but malts dominate. Some light fruits greet the nose, definitely citrus too... Malts provide some light caramel and toffee flavors. Overall a very mellow flavor...the hops are kept in check by the malts, and there is an underlying breadiness throughout.

T: This is one of the most balanced pale ales I've tasted. Malts are sweet, with notes of caramel and toffee. Hops are floral, slightly bitter, and give a little twang. Strong bread notes underneath it all.

MF/D: Lighter in body than other examples, carbonation is pretty good. Nicely balanced, with a lingering bready finish

A: A hazy orange with a thin white head.

S: A rye grain aroma with some citrus notes.

T: A nice rye flavor with some citrus fruit hop. The finish is more rye grain with a lingering bitter citrus.

M: Lower carbonation and smooth feel. Very drinkable.

O: I'm a big fan of rye beers. This one is definitely near the top. Easy drinking and a nice refreshing citrus quality to it. Very solid. You can't go wrong ordering this beer.

A- golden honey amber with a chill haze and a decent off white head. ok retention and little spots of lace.

S- spicy rye and loads of grainy goodness, pineapple, grapefruit, and some pine.

T- more spicy rye and lightly toasted barley with a powdery spruce hop finish. a little fruity bitterness as well works nicely with the rye sourness. orange, pineapple, grapefruit, and earthy english hops.

MF-lightly grainy feel, slightly resinous and a quickly fading astringency that dries out the finish.

D- mellow yet tasty flavor and a real thirst quencher.

I first rated this one about a year and a half ago long before I developed my taste for hops. (Which began about 6 months ago). Since I have now become nearly chemically dependant on hops, I figured I'd give this another go, and boy am I glad I did. This poured wonderfully! A beautiful slightly hazy golden orange with a lovely 2 and a half finger white head which really hung around for a while. Heavy, sticky lacing dresses the sides of the glass. The smell is powerfully citrusy hoppy. To the same style of Hercules DIPA, but not nearly as strong, of course. Smells absolutely delicious! The taste is hops almost all the way through. Citrusy as it washes over your tongue, then turning pine like. The only malt that shows up does so in the after taste. Not exactly what I would call balanced, but for what it is, it's delicious and I like it. Mouthfeel is great. appropriately carbonated for the style, and a good weight for what it is. As for drinkability, this is extremely sessionable. I could drink this all night!! Funny how our tastes change over time, eh?
Blessed Be

Appears medium amber in the glass with an ample 2 finger head. The aroma is a balanced mix of citrusy hops and rye malts--and for some reason it seems very powdery to me. The flavor is also balanced, starting grainy and finishing bitter with some fruity notes. Medium body. Not the best rye pale ale out there but solid and easy to drink.

Thanks goes out to gford217 for sending me another great beer from Terrapin.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle with a freshness date of 5/17/09.
Drunk from a snifter. The pour produces a 1 finger white bubbly head, leaving a colar of assorted bubbles.
Lace is thin but sticky.
The color is a golden light orangish color, tansparent.

Aromas of mild woody tobacco, a touch of spicie rye, Grassy hay filled hops with a touch of pine. and a nice buscuity malt and yeast aroma.

Starts out well carbonated becoming more creamy and subdued into a thin mouthfeel at the swallow. Sweet at first, then hops bite and lay off a little then linger mildly after the swallow with pine and a touch of lemon zest.
Spicie rye and somthing peppery just before the swallow, as I allow the beer to wander my mouth for an extended period.
A touch of tanins long into the finish. But its mild and observed so far in that it doesnt matter.
Crisp clean finish with a nice hop bite and a a snap of rye....Deeelish.

Best by 11/23/10.

A-Pours a light golden orange color with a two finger white head.

S-Pine and flower notes with some orange and grapefruit.

T-Slightly bitter pine and orange upfront with a bit of rye bread character on the finish with some more bitterness.

M-Light bodied with low, prickly carbonation and a pretty smooth, drying mouthfeel.

D-A pretty nice beer that's easy drinking but still interesting. The rye is pretty perceivable, but I think I'd like it to have just a little more hop flavor.

pours a cloudy orange amber with a large head that hangs for a bit.  nose; fresh tangerine pulp (amarillo hops), grassy & citrus hops, & yeasty bread (perhaps the rye).  almost a belgian tripel take on the nose.  taste; grainy malted rye, orange pulp & zest, lemongrass, mango bitters, amarillo hops, biscuit, & light peppercorn.  taste, again, is slightly reminiscent of belgian brews.  medium carbonation & mouthfeel.  about as robust and flavorful as a straight pale ale is going to get.  if you're a rye fan, double score for this one.  lots of grain, fruit & leaf for an abv sessionable pale!

Pours a clear amber producing 1 1/2 fingers of off-white, frothy, somewhat lasting head that leaves some patchy streaks, strings & motes of lace. Aroma is grainy, toasty & floral with bitter & spicy notes of rye, piney hops & a faint hint of grapefruit. Taste is earthy grain, toast & rye mixed with earthy citrus & pine. Produces a low-moderate bitter across the tongue, front to back, with a floral, grapefruit, piney resin & light pepper mixing with spicy rye & pale/lightly toasted malt background producing a nicely bitter, dry finish. Unusually the bitter does not linger in the predominantly but shortlived malty aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, dry, drawing & peppery. Pairs exceptionally with spicy boiled crawfish.

Fills my Terrapin pint glass with a clear autumn amber brew with a small white head. A fair amount of bubbles rise to the top.

Smells delicious from the get-go. Tons of citrus hops and sweet malt notes flow from the glass. Really nice aroma on this one, bold and delightful. Perhaps a hint of rye in the smell, but mostly I smell hops.

Taste doesn’t disappoint either; I get a lot of fine citrus hops on top of a real smooth malt backbone. Grapefruit notes are quite strong. There’s also a definite rye sourness which adds a lot to the finished product and gives it a rather unique taste. Rye Pale Ale is slightly sweet, but mostly hoppy – the bottle says they used 5 kinds of hops and I’m not complaining at all.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with a lingering bitter crispness thanks to the hops. Malt flavor is hidden by the hoppy assault, but still balances out the bitterness with some sneaky sweetness.

Bottom Line: Terrapin Rye is Real Tasty™ and awfully drinkable. Really hits the spot on a hot day like this one. I may have found a new session beer…

Into a DFH tapered pint, pours a dark copper with a nice inch white head with decent retention, moderate lacing. The aroma has nice rye and caramel malt, nice round hop bill. The taste is rather the same, hops have a good citrus juice to it, and rides through the whole lenght of tasting, with a solid malt backbone and the rye ducking in for a show of hands. The mouth is medium, nice carbonation, a little dry, but a good quaffer. Not very complex or really that 'interesting,' but a solid beer. Could easily sit down to a case of this.

A: I gotta give credit where credit is due. This is truly a picturesque beer. Amazingly clear amber body filled with tons of quickly rising bubbles that form a thick rocky head on the top of the beer. I give this a 6 on appearance.

S: Spicy notes, possibly from both hops and rye.

T: Good bitterness and rye right up front. The rye dies a bit but the bitterness lasts.

M: Fairly thick but strangely creamy. The creaminess seems to defy the spice and hops.

D: I'm not sure how many of these I could drink before my tongue waves the white flag, but I'd be willing to find out.
