not sure where i got this...pretty sure i picked it up in NC a while back...but when my personal glass whale showed up today...i needed a terrapin beer stat and "a beer for hope" sounded perfect. enjoyed from a 22 oz terrapin oversized snifter.

a - brew filled the massive glass and poured a ruby purple with a finger of bubbly cream colored head that bubbled away leaving a thin patchy skin of bubbles on the surface. spotty and streaky lacing clung to the glass.

s - fairly malty with some nuttiness and grape. subtle but to style.

t - as the nose suggested, classic scotch ale flavorings of nuts and grapes. malt dominated with no sign of any hops. there is definitely a glazing of oxidation and the flavor carries a bit of a tin vibe, but i quickly became adjusted to it. big caramel.

m - medium bodied, but chewy. almost winter warmer feeling.

o - overall, nice scotch ale. nothing mind blowing, but very true to style and enjoyable. the bottle i have is beginning to show some age (though i never had this fresh), it feels like it is still holding well and should be fine for a while.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains dark fruits, bourbon, vanilla, caramelized malts, Belgian yeast and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel dark fruit, bourbon and vanilla. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty malt character and Belgian yeast. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: A little crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, good kick, decent variation of style, it’s a decent beer to drink if you want something slightly different.

I got this in a trade quite a while ago. Can't remember who from, but thanks whomever. Review is from notes taken on 12/3/2011 and poured from the bottle to a snifter.

Appearance: Pour is the standard dark coppery color and has a really solid ruby hue to it; starts with a very scant and short light tan head that fades to nothing other than a faint wisp in the center and a thin ring around the surface; body is dark, but has solid clarity; can't see much carbonation in this one;

Smell: Smell is solid -- a bit sweeter than a lot of other Scotch Ales, despite their tendency to be sweeter anyway, and there is definitely a banana-like scent to it as well; bit of a chewy and yeasty breadiness underneath it all; for being close to 9%, the alcohol is invisible in the nose.

Taste: I think this beer is quite solid, and I'm a little disappointed to see that it's only averaged a B at the time of this review; a lot of caramel and a slight touch of bittersweet chocolate to it as well; maltiness to it, and there's that underlying peaty/smokey aspect that comes with the style; the Belgian style yeast adds a nice new dimension though and brings a nice smooth, mellow banana aspect to it and I feel that there is also just a touch of Candi to it as well.

Mouthfeel: Body is of medium weight, and it's a bit chewy and sticky; carbonation is still present, and I'm pleasantly surprised by that as I really can't see any, but it makes its appearance and keeps it lively - I was a little worried it may come across flat and watery because of it, but nope, came through just fine; a thick coating is left all over the roof of the mouth; belly is left a little warm -- the only place where the alcohol has made an appearance.

Overall: I wish this was something that was available as at least a seasonal offering, it would make a great late fall/early winter beer as it has a nice sweetness, depth and warmth.

Pours a clear deep ruby red with a light cream head that lingers as a thin film.

Slightly sweet aroma with some alcohol presence. Light candied dark fruit and toffee.

Upfront taste is sweet candied dark fruits and caramel. Toasted bready malt and sweet caramel middle. Finish is less sweet; lots of bready malts, some light fruity esters, a little alcohol. Lingering light sweetness.

Medium body, syrupy with medium to low carbonation.

Not understanding the "Belgian style" about this beer. Just seems like a heavier scotch ale. Decent, but nothing special.

22 oz bottle. $8.99. I think I bought it at Beer Run. Another unintentionally aged beers.

Appearance: Not too pretty really. Hazy brownish red. Clears some with warming. Very thin head with almost no retention. A spot or two of lace.

Smell: Toast and caramel. Spicy yeast including a bit of clove. There is a bit of leafy hops in the background.

Taste: Quite prominent Belgian yeast spiciness and a bit too much on the clove. Caramel sweetness with a slightly steely flavor. Little bite of ethanol and a slight hops bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is much better than the head suggests. Its just about right. Feels pretty big and slightly sticky.

Overall: This is OK. I don't like it when Belgian yeasts start spitting out loads of clove, and that's what happened here. Nice caramel maltiness though.

22oz bottle poured into a Snifter.

Pours a hazy mahogany with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly, leaving perhaps just a spot or two of haze. Sweet, malty aromas of brown sugar, molasses, and raisin dominate the nose, and the taste follows through similarly, but with a good amount of Belgian character from the yeast, Sweet and more then a bit boozy, but surprisingly easy drinking. Mouthfeel is a touch thinner then I'd like, and lacking that "stickiness" that I like in my Scotch Ales. Probably about medium-bodied overall, with a decent amount of carbonation. Overall a solid beer, but an amazing cause!

22oz bottle into 25oz snifter.

A: Pours a very dark cedar red with a thin, greasy tan head that faded into a thick collar that left a ton of tiny spotty of lacing down the glass.
S: Strong notes of sweet malt and dark fruits with a good dose of alcohol vapor.
T: Lightly roasted and sweet flavors of toffee, caramel, molasses, raisin, marshmallow-esque vanilla, and honey. There is also a touch of earthy hops, flavors of plums and other dark fruits, as well as a mild spiciness. The Belgian yeast is noticeable and gives a distinct bready spicy character. Finish is lightly bitter/sour, and the aftertaste is drying.
M: Slick oily mouthfeel with a touch of warming alcohol. Body has a medium thickness to it and the carbonation is tingly and even.
O: Interesting flavor, sweet and a spicy. It became a bit tedious half way through the bottle, but overall it was pretty enjoyable.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a snifter.

The Terrapin Reunion Belgian Scotch Ale pours a coffee-colored, slightly transluscent brown into the glass forming a very thin edge of white head that stays only on the edge of the glass. There are only tiny whisps of lacing appear after drinking which eventually disappear.

The beer smells of brown sugar and cinnamon and Belgian yeasty funk. Lots and lots of malt. It's quite nice.

The beer tastes of malty goodness surrounded by hints of that cinnamon and spice as well as brown sugar. Mingled into it all is that Belgian funk, present but not overpowering?

This beer has a light-medium, medium body, overall lighter than I expected. The carbonation is good and the Belgian finish is long, I just wish the beer were a little heavier.

Overall I like the beer. A great malty goodness of a scotch ale. It has it's faults, but I would drink this beer again. My girlfriend likes it too. Support the institute for Myeloma Bone and Cancer Research by trying it for yourself.

Poured from a 650.6 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

S - Malty caramel sweetness and fruitiness of pears,raisins and dark cherries.

A - Deep, clear brown with a half inch off white head and lacing that doesn't persist long. Streams of effervescence.

T - Sweet, sugary malts upfront. Dark fruits (predominantly raisins) and a slightly roasty, burnt caramel flavor in the middle. Lingering boozy, sweet finish. Favorable presence of alcohol but well hidden.

M - Moderate bodied but surprisingly light, given the style and the ABV. A little too light for my taste, but interesting.

O - A very interesting brew. The strong dark fruit character, presumably the result of the Trappist Belgian yeast strain provides a unique complexity to the Scotch Ale style. While I wouldn't enjoy much of this beer at a session, it is certainly a well-crafted product. Another quality brew from Terrapin.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Out of the bottle the body forms an apparent dark brown chestnut/caramel like body, but when shone to light it becomes a gorgeous ruby red. Head doesn't stick around much of it's foamy nature, kind of light in appearance and a simple light tan.

Bouquet is a good strong thick malt typical of a Scotch Ale but, mixes an airy whisp of Belgian like yeast. At first it's seems kind of odd, but after sometime I seem to enjoy it more. There's a little hint of banana and fruity esters too.

On taste though it comes off as a cross between several different styles. Malty banana palate like a Marzen/Doppelbock, spicy yeast like a Hefeweizen, and then finishes like a Scotch Ale with steely like caramel. Body though is incredibly wet and finish doesn't last. Tongue gets numb after awhile

Overall I am kind of not thrilled with this, it tastes like a complete mess. The cause is great though.

Pours a medium dark hazy brown with ruby highlights, small 1/2 finger off white head that fades quickly , spotty lacing.

Aroma of caramel, yeast and dark fruit and a hint of alcohol.

Taste was slightly sweet of caramel, brown sugar, malt and a slight bitter end.

Mouthfeel was medium body light carbonation, a sweet smooth beginning and a slightly dry end.

Overall a nice beer, easy drinking, needs a little more thickness for a scotch ale.

another one i am finally getting around to typing up.

Poured a hazel brown with a nice 1 inch head that slowly faded lacing up the sides. Much visible carbonation and a noticeable hissing sound. Smell was very nutty, and I mean that literally. Smell was of nuts and caramel with a hint of hops and just a touch of alcohol, smells like its gonna warm you up. The taste was very very sweet, syrupy and lots of dark fruit flavors. Very sugary sweet, no real taste of alcohol, which at 8%abv is a nice touch.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass, the beer is a hazy, opaque, deeply dark ruby-brown coloring with no head. Heavy sweet malt aromas, with some dark fruit characteristics of dates and figs. Almost has a port wine scent at times. The beer is surprisingly crisp and sharp in mouth...I was absolutely expecting a slick, heavier feel to it. The flavors are heavy and dark, with a prune and fig sweetness that is centered in the palate, and some slight peppery bitter characteristics around the edges. Smokey notes towards the end of the flavors helps to tie everything up, and a hint of booze that every Scotch should have, in my opinion. The finish is sharp and crisp, with a slight drying. The aftertaste is almost syrupy with the bevy of dark sweet flavors and overall heaviness to the body. Decent brew, and for a good cause!

Pours with a very faint head over a 'thin' (for the style) looking orange/brown body, with noticeable carbonation flowing up.

Aromas are full of caramel, with bready/yeasty quality coming through secondarily. Not bad.

Rich on the palate, with the typical flavors of toffee, caramel, and roasted malt, but also incorporates plenty of navel oranges and citrus-like bitterness in the finish. More carbonation than a typical scotch ale - the Belgian yeast influence, maybe?

Overall, it's not bad for the style, and I give them credit for trying something I've never experienced before.

This Reunion 2010 brew was a nod to Virginia MacLean. She died of cancer in 2007 and was of Scottish heritage, hench... this Scotch/Wee Heavy brew. Rest in peace Virginia...

A: Dark brown, with ever the slightest ruby color when held up to a light source. Very little head overall.

S: Brown sugar, with tons of dark fruit... and with no hop presence (which is appropriate for this style).

T: Meh... Belgian stuff cut through, but not too much. I actually kinda dug the candy quality. This was a tad more fruity than most Wee Heavys that I've tried.

M: Sugar content aplenty... but with malt, malt, and even more malt! The carbonation was low to moderate.

O: I really wanted to like this beer due to it's worth cause, but it was another halfway attempt from a normally great brewery.

A: extremely, deep, dark copper color, clear, nice head when poured but it quickly dissipated
S: medium nose, nice roasted malt, somewhat cloying, faint hint of Belgium character
T: nice beer, definitely hits the mark for what it is described as (Scottish ale with Belgian influence), sweeter roasted malt up front with good Belgian yeasty finish, hops are there in finish but malt dominates, good job without being too Scottish or too Belgium, doesn't taste like an 8.5% ABV beer - much less
M: rounded, sweet, cloying like a scotch ale
O: decent beer, and hits the mark, good job, this would be good on a winter's night

650ml bottle. "An American Belgian Styled Scotch ale" Pretty convoluted if you ask me. Just call it an ale.

It pours a dark, deep purpleish/red/brown with a foamy off-white head that leaves a few spots of lacing.

The smell is perfumey and alcoholic with notes of nail polish remover and vodka. I can't really get past the burning smell. It also smells pretty caramally.

The flavor isn't necessarily hot and boozy but I feel the alcohol accounts for the taste. It is fruity like wine, very vinous with a weird green vegetable taste. There is also a cloying sweetness that is too much. There is a hint of scotch ale in here, but only a hint.

This is an epic failure, what a horrible beer.

A: Pours a hazy, medium-brown body. The head is about one finger in height, off-white in color. Retention is decent.

S: Fruity esters of plum, prunes. Possibly a touch of clove, but that could be the power of suggestion. I definitely smell the caramel, which is brash and dominant. I don't pick up much else in the way of malt characteristics. Pretty simplistic. I was hoping for more from a Belgian yeast strain.

T: About the same as the nose. It's not all that complex. The caramel dominates; there are no secondary malt characteristics to pick up. The yeast doesn't do much for the flavor.

M: Might be a little dry for a scotch ale, but that's not a criticism. Actually, the yeast could stand to do more work and express itself; the beer could afford to be drier and still be tasty.

O: No one cared to finish the bomber; it wound up getting poured in favor of a number of other beers on the table.

I found this on the shelf of a Boudry's liquor store in Mandarin, FL. It's very similar to a rochefort trappistes 10 in every respect. I'm not sure if this was the effect they were looking for in an Abbey Strong Dark, but terrapin has achieved it.

A: Pours a deep molasses based soda color without a lot of head due to the alcohol content. Lacing is slight and not very clingy.

S: Smells of alcohol and wood chips.

T: Tastes biscuity with roasted caramel notes up front, alcohol and dry oak with a edam cheese flavor finish. No hops bitterness, well balanced.

M: Chewy and rich, full bodied. Some alcohol is noticeable although not overpowering. Plenty of soda sized carbonation but drinkable.

D: A nice solid traditional style Abby/Trappist strong dark style. A very good achievement for Terrapin.

A - A dark cloudy cola color. Small head.

S - Sweet and alcohol. Mahogany and honey. Anyways, I want to taste it.

T - Sweet malts up front, then smooth, and then bitter and dry at the end. Very tasty.

M - A little bit of carbonation, but very smooth.

D -A good beer, but not a multiple drink in a night.

Pours a dark reddish, copper color with a small non-descript head. Leaves some nice oily legs on the glass. The smell is straight up sweet malts. This is the perfect example of what a Wee Heavy should smell like. Sweet malts, a little smokey peat and a little booze. The taste is much of the same. There is a slight booze taste but the sweetness mixes well with it. It is a little watery as well. The mouthfeel is velvety smooth but could be a little heavier given the style. I want my Scotch ales to have a lot of body. Overall this is a very drinkable beer for being as sweet as it is and also being 8.5%.

Reddish brown color with a nonexistent head.

A bit on the thin side.
Decent beer. Would drink it again if someone bought it for me.

Fizzy beige head vanishes quickly above a deep reddish, dark amber body.

Orange rind and light pine aroma, with a caramelized sugar backbone. Some toffee notes.

Darker caramel malt flavor with floral perfumy notes and a fruity finish.

Peppery alcohol mouthfeel with some sweetness rounding out the edges. Nice balance of soft and prickly.

Pretty drinkable, alcohol not all that noticeable. Reminds me of a holiday winter warmer, a style that doesn't normally excite me. The Belgian yeast provides a nice intricacy of mouthfeel and some fruitiness but detracts from the best part of a scotch ale, the robust malt character.

Pleasing and tasty take on a Belgian Scoth Ale.

Presentation: 22 oz brown capped bottle with a foiled top. Label with quite the tacky illustration of a bright red bird picking up hops over a saturated blue sky and a rural landscape. Side narrative explains the charity memorial effort celebrated by the brew, and offers a brief description. Notes vintage as Reunion '10. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Brown pour with a fair head, moderate retention, fair surface memory with minimal touches of lacing.

S - Malty nose, caramel with a fruity hint in the backbone.

T - Taste flows expanding the nose with a long malt ride, plenty of caramel, and a sense of dark fruits in the back with a faint hint of hops as they are woven with a soft Belgian yeasty sense.

M - Medium/ body and carbonation, with a rounded boozy touch in the finish that is well integrated.

D - Rather well rounded and direct. Nice drink.

Notes: Not sure how it compares to any standards for the style, but next to other Belgian Scoth Ales I've tried this sits comfortably at the top tier. Not that it is a favorite style of mine but this is rather pleasing. Nice charity collaboration from Terrapin, and while I'd love to have some of their brews nearby on a regular basis, this was a welcome sighting in my region.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a coca-cola reddish brown color with a quickly diminishing, light-brown fizzy head. Aroma is dark malts, caramel, a hint of peat, a bit of banana, chocolate, and wood. Flavor is caramel, roasted malts, banana, raisins, and spicy hops. Mouthfeel is medium, active, dry, sweet finished balanced with a hop bitterness. Good beer.
