Terrapin Moo-Hoo

Reviewed from notes from the Spring. Poured from a 12 oz into a standard pint.

Appearance: Mostly black stout with a short lived brown head. 3.75/5

Smell: Mostly milk chocolate and not much else. 3.5/5

Taste: Mostly one dimensional with milk chocolate being that dimension. Some nice roast malts too. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: Kinda a thin stout, but kind of thick. 3.5/5

This is interesting and it did what it said it would but not much else. 3.5/5

12 oz. can, BBD 3/28/22

Great appearance, opaque mahogany, three fingers fine tan head. Full lacing curtains and cap.

Cocoa, milk, toffee aromas

Smooth cocoa and lactose flavors, very light roast malt flavors.

Smooth and sweet up front, full bodied, light hop aftertaste. Stubborn carbonation.
This can was past its best by, but did not suffer in flavor or head. Old reliable.

En World of the Seas (Playmaker's Bar), en Barcelona. Agradable perfil chocolatoso en una milk stout sin florituras pero muy bien equilibrada

I think I overestimated the chocolate in this one because it's definitely more milk oriented than chocolate oriented. Beautifully black with a dark caramel head that built up and dissipated with minimal lace. The aroma has a little bit of chocolate but honestly it smells just like milk. Nice full bodied texture, well carbonated but not thick or syrupy in consistency with the roasted malts carrying the body well. Slight bitterness that melts with the lactose sweetness. The chocolate becomes more pronounced when you look for it. Overall it's a decent stout to sip on, but nothing life changing. Best by date of 3/14/2022, tasted on 4/14/2022. A little late to the party but it's doubtful if it would have tasted much different.

Picked up a sixer for i think 1/2 off on 12-26-21 for $5.28. No canning date; reviewed 4-11-22.

Beer poured dark brown with a very nice tan head with the original pour.

Nose has hints of lactose and medium roasted malts.

Taste is really well balanced with a light medium roasted malt base that gets some bittering from cacao nibs and light hopping to offset the lactose.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and sort of smooth.

Overall a pleasurable light beer to drink if you are in the mood for a good milk stout!

This is a 12oz. can poured into the Terrapin pint glass. This brew poured very dark, with a thin cap of dark tan foam with no lacing left behind. This beer is way to dark to notice any carbonation.
The aroma is a light sweet roasted malt that is not very noticeable while cold. There is a light coffee note that the sniffer is picking up.
Sweet milk chocolate up front giving way to the dry roasted coffee finish.
This brew is milky, creamy smooth, carbonation is not a factor.
This stout is enjoyable and pretty much what I expect from a milk stout.

Appearance:
Dark brown, so lightless and impermeable it appears black. Low retention, forgettable, off-white head. Lace? Hah. Nope.

Bouquet:
Crisp, cool chocolate malts with a half-imagined blip of whole vanilla bean.

Feel:
A thick yet aqueous medium—just like milk. Quietly hums with carbonation, which resuscitates its malt profile. Sweet but in a mild way, like reduced-sugar candy.

Taste:
Ice cold milk chocolate, awkwardly swollen with pilsner malts. A sliver of metallic acidity—the curse of some beers brewed with lactose—sporadically taints the aftertaste; airtime eventually eliminates it.

Overall:
Just ok... but since most chocolate milk stouts are trash (e.g., Samuel Smiths Organic) being ok is actually an accomplishment here. It does have one glaring flaw though. Every so often, it'll taste or smell like olives. Now, you may be asking yourself, "why should a chocolate stout taste like olives?"

The answer is: IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULDN'T. A milk chocolate beer should never have anything to do with olives. That'd be like pairing vanilla mousse with a glass of vinegar. So if you see this stout on the shelf of your local liquor store, I recommend you leave it there.
