Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We always love a good experimental brew here at Terrapin, but the salty-sweet combo of peanuts and chocolate has us all salivating a little more than usual. This brew, while smooth and mellow, still manages to challenge your tastebuds. The porter base is dark and smooth, with enough backbone to support the richer chocolate and peanut butter additions. It’s even dry “peanuted” with brewery-boiled green peanuts! Here’s to the candy-loving kid in all of us!

Poured into a nonic pint glass. The liquid is almost completely black, with some dark brown hints at the edges. The pour kicks up a two-finger tan head that leaves a nice amount of lace. Definitely what I would hope a peanut butter porter would look like!

The aroma definitely has peanut butter! I was worried that there wouldn't be enough, but it's the dominant note here, even before the beer has warmed up at all. I also get some wheat bread, and hints of citrusy hops that suggest jelly... but maybe I'm just getting carried away with peanut butter associations. Either way, this is a great aroma, even if not particularly complex.

The flavor starts off with some milk chocolate, before the peanut butter comes in along with the citrusy hops. The swallow finishes clean, and then the aftertaste is mostly peanut butter, with a little bit of chocolate. The light hop presence is a really nice surprise here, and does a good job balancing the chocolate and peanut butter both bitterness- and flavor-wise.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, with a moderate amount of carbonation. I feel like it would have been better with a thicker body, but maybe that would have made it too sticky.

Overall, very good, even if it mostly focuses on one note. It feels like kind of a novelty, but of course novelties have their place, and I would definitely recommend this one.

12ozB, Best by 04/17/16, Enjoyed 12/03/15

A: dark brown with foamy khaki head

S: sweet smell of chocolate, fresh roasted peanuts,

T: roasted malts, hint of bitter chocolate then slight nuttyness,

M: medium, doesn't lay it thick on the tongue

O: The initial aroma is amazing sweet smell of peanuts and chocolate. Like a favorite peanut butter cup. After tasting I get roasted malts, hints of chocolate with a slight bit of nuttyness, back to roasted. Unfortunately the taste dissipates quickly. Its good for the brewery because you want to keep tasting it, but bad as the drinker because you don't get to dwell on the peanut or chocolate flavors for long. Good roasted porter base.

My GF w/celiac review:
"Smells nice. I don't smell peanuts. Smells like your coffee ones. The foam is sparkly though. Like really glittery. Its a very pretty beer."

12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clear, very dark brown body with a few glimmers of ruby when it catches the light. Modestly-sized, light beige head.

Smell: Dark maltiness, hints of sweetish chocolate, caramel and gentle roast mingled with the butter whats made of peanuts. Thin sliver of dark fruitiness.

Taste: Chocolate laced dark malts with the growing peanut butter flavor surrounding it like a German death squad. Hints of black olive, dark fruit. Rise of blonde caramel. Minimal hop character and bitterness. Semi-dry finish, soft in feel, with lingering flavors of peanuts.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Agreeably sleek mouthfeel.

Overall: Better than anticipated! Admittedly, while I don't have any particular beef with p-butter, I've never really reveled in it. As a kid, I ducked PBJ sandwiches and would readily trade away Reese's Peanut Butter Cups come Halloween.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass.
Aroma- Has a unique aroma of cocoa, peanut butter and malts, nice.
Appearance- Damn near black in color and has a small tannish head.
Taste- A taste of malt with a chocolate backdrop. This is surprisingly good.
Palate- A medium bodied beer with a moderate of carbonation. Slightly oily texture.
Overall- Definitely one of the better chocolate/peanut butter porters/stouts that I have tried, I have had a couple of other beers similar in style but this is one of the more successful - a nice combination of flavors without a lot of associated sweetness. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one.

A great flavored Porter. Color os extremely dark and head is nice and foamy off-white. Aroma is of malt and a cocoa-coffee blend. Taste is amazing with hints of toasted chocolate, penut butter, sweet malt, etc. The balance is great, as is the carbonation. The peanut butter flavor is just enough to add to the flavor without overpowering. Awesome !!

Pours out dark brown, almost black, with a thin frothed off-white head. Smells of Reese's peanut butter cups, peanut butter M&Ms and Butterfinger. Tastes more beer-like than the smell lead me to believe. Nice lightly toasted and roasted malt base highlighted by big nuttiness and complimentary chocolate. I get some tahini as well. Medium body with subdued carbonation. This is a perfect beer for someone who loves chocolate and peanut butter. Delicious.

A: Pours an opaque yet clear extremely dark brown in color (almost black) with light amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some moderate amounts of coal brown + amber highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy tan head that reduces to medium to large sized patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of roasted malts, dark malts, cocoa, and a light aroma of peanut butter (more like a chocolate peanut version of Nutella).

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of dark malts with a lighter flavor of roasted malts. That is followed by a slightly sweet chocolate/cocoa peanut butter (similar to Nutella). Light amounts of bitterness in the finish which fades quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly slick.

O: Definitely one of the better chocolate/peanut butter porters/stouts that I have tried, I have had a couple of other beers similar in style but this is one of the more successful - a nice combination of flavors without a lot of associated sweetness. First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Dark brown-black pour with a small mocha head that receded to a ringlet; minimal lacing. I wasn't aware that this was a peanut butter beer, but one sniff, and it was pretty obvious; otherwise, chocolate malts, and not much else. Dark malts in the taste, pretty sweet and not a lot of roastiness, toasted grains, again, the peanut butter comes through, not so much that it's right in your face. Body was just barely on the fuller side of medium, with a slightly chewy texture, lower carbonation. Quite good overall.

On tap at Sticks and Stones in Greensboro.Poured into a standard pint glass nearly pitch black with a minimal head.Aromas of roasted nuts and chocolate,to me almost like nutella with the chocolate and roasted nuts.Starts out semi sweet with chocolate standing out over top of molasses, the roasty nuttiness is a nice finish to the sweetness.Iam not normally really into these kinds of beers but I gotta say this wasn't to bad.

22oz brown bomber, sample from the brewery.

Mmmm ... artificial flavors.

Good lacing on this dark brew, some processed jelly and powdered peanuts in the nose and on the tastebuds. Roasted malts and a hint of cocao nibs balance out any sweetness that tries to go to far. This is simply a flavored beer, I get that you want to be all wacky but cheating with so many flavorings ... artificial flavorings at that. One and done, there are better PB&J beers out there.

12 oz bottle, with best enjoyed before dating notched onto the side of the label

Pours very dark brown, dark khaki cap, leaves some moderate lacing

Sniff notes here are chocolate and I def get some peanut butter as well, nice complex nose.

Complex porter with more of the nose on the palate, will not be for everybody, but it's a quality brew with the flavor somehow focused and working together, likely would be great with certain chocolate n PB influenced desserts.

Pours opaque, dark brown, with 1/4 inch head. Taste is English brown ale, toffee, light chocolate, and a decent peanut kick. Nice creaminess at the end. Really good dessert beer. I prefer DuClaw's peanut butter beer better, but this one is very good. I would certainly pick this one up again.
