Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We always love a good experimental brew here at Terrapin, but the salty-sweet combo of peanuts and chocolate has us all salivating a little more than usual. This brew, while smooth and mellow, still manages to challenge your tastebuds. The porter base is dark and smooth, with enough backbone to support the richer chocolate and peanut butter additions. It’s even dry “peanuted” with brewery-boiled green peanuts! Here’s to the candy-loving kid in all of us!

“Natural and artificial flavors”, hmmph. Not a great beginning to this, another attempt at a “chocolate peanut butter porter”. I’m ever hopeful some brewery is going to adequately capture the palate joy that is a Reese’s, but I know it’s also a tall task.

Appearance: Pretty much pours black, with only a hint of ruddy ruby. No lace to speak of, either.

Aroma: Some bittersweet cocoa, and a touch of saltiness. Not bad.

Taste: Odd and off, with some of the bittersweet cocoa and the peanut butter saltiness, but the overall palate sensation isn’t all there. It’s drinkable, but doesn’t contain the right balance and feel of the chocolate and peanut butter melding as I’d hoped for. I expect pretty solid beers from the dependable Terrapin, but this one doesn’t quite make it.

Picked up in the variety pack. Best before 12.3.15. Poured into New Belgium snifter. Pitch black with tan frothy 2 inch head that has think bubbly surface. Fades slowly not leaving lace but as I drink lace is retained against the glass. Smell is reeses. Despite the strong scent of chocolate and peanut butter the taste is not as forward. Very mild and drinkable. Not as creamy as expected either. Good beer, would love to try aged a year or two. Cheers!

Poured on draft into a 16oz pint.

A: Pours a dark chocolate brown with a thin khaki head that quickly dissipates with little lacing.

S: Smell is a delicious peanut butter and chocolate with a touch of toast. Intoxicating.

T: Taste is moderate coffee and chocolate with a peanut butter aftertaste that settles nicely on the palate. Not straight Reese's, but nice.

M: Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and body, a typical porter weight.

O: Though not very heady, a great tasting porter that's worth every sip. Love this beer!

Poured quickly from a bottle, with dated expiration in early December.

Look: solid black (in a dimly lit setting, mind you) with practically no head. Would-be lacing moves down with the glass very quickly. Interesting.
Smell: Oh, the peanut butter! I wasn't sure what I expected coming into this. The smooth chocolate is there, but I'm gushing over how strongly the peanut butter is coming through
Taste: Considering what this felt like on the nose, surprised to not get more peanut butter up front, but it is quite present in the aftertaste. Chocolate like I've witnessed in many brown ales before. This is for desert, but it's drinkably sweet. I quite like it.
Feel: There's a thickness to this that's appropriate on account of the chocolate peanut butter. Carbonation is solid; any more would be a mistake.
Overall: If you enjoy delicious porters and the occasional desert beer, this is for you. It's sweet, peanut buttery, chocolate-y like a bowl of Reese's Puffs--but, it's a pretty damn elegant brew. I want to try this on tap.

Looked great in the glass, very dark brown with a caramel colored head that dissipated over a few minutes. Smell of chocolate and slight smell of peanut. Taste was nearly the same, dark malt, chocolate, and the peanut was most noticeable in the finish. Very nice to drink after dinner as more of a dessert substitute, might not pair well with food. Also not overly sweet for a beer of this variety

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar, but when held up to the light the corners of the glass are clear and dark red in color. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that quickly died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of peanut butter are present in the nose along with notes of of chocolate. It kind of smells like a Snickers bar.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has little in the way of sweetness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that a chocolate peanut butter Porter might be heavy, but this does a pretty good job at having a mouthfeel that is true to the style and isn't heavy.

Had this on tap

Pours a nice black with a tan head which looks exactly like you would hope a chocolate peanut butter stout to look like. Smell is very faint, smells nutty and sweet chocolate. Taste's great! A very nice milk chocolate taste, with a slight bitterness that leads into a sweet nutty flavor. Peanut butter is tough to incorporate and make it's presence felt, but Terrapin does a great job with this bubbly, smooth treat.

Dark beer with very little light coming through. Very small dark caramel color head that goes away quick. I got a strong scent of peanut butter. Can taste malts mixed with chocolate. A very delicious porter.
