Dark and menacing and pretty much opaque poured into the wide wine glass. Modest foam but spritzy and tangy on the tongue. Massive nose of vanilla and booze.

Big Bourbon flavor is totally on target. The dark caramel, dark roast malt, and sweet liqueur flavor go well with the whiskey. This stuff is definitely high octane. This batch was listed at 10.1% and I believe it. It tastes hot with alcohol and the second sip will let you know there's a fire somewhere in your cerebellum. Big flavor but a mellow finish.

It's hard to find fault with this, though others might have more elegant Bourbon flavors, and it's very sippable and pleasing. Happy to support the local guys, who seem to be doing very well with the expanded tasting room and outdoor patio. This was $22 for a 64 oz (gulp!) growler, so a much better deal than the usual 22 oz liquor store oferings.

The bar I had this at only listed it as "Imperial Porter", turns out it's also Bourbon Barrel Aged. If this turns out to be a BA version of Succellus, please change the name on this listing. The breweries website was of no help.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a solid black, not the somewhat translucent dark brown expected of a Porter. The beer had just over 1/4 inch of light brown head that had very good retention and lacing.

The bourbon was upfront in the nose, but not overpoweringly so. The expected light roast and solid grains were present and provided a good base for the booze. On the tongue, the story was a wee bit different, the bourbon was a bit stronger of a presence, hiding some of the basic "beerness". There was also a notable alcohol taste and burn that detracted somewhat from the flavors.

The body was very good indeed, only that alky burn on the finish kept this from a higher score. The beer was full without being heavy or sludgy. Drinkability was excellent, especially for such a big beer. I don't know that I'd have more than 2 in a row, but I'd certainly have 1 a day until the keg kicks. Overall, a very good, bordering on excellent, beer. A must try if you see it and probably worth a bit of a road trip to Mt. Vernon if the brewery has it on tap.
