750ml, caged and corked bottle (@9.6% ABV), 2015 edition. A blend of sour blond and 'triple' ales in three different oak vessels, hence the name 'Blood of the Oak'.

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium copper amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and rather fizzy off-white head, which leaves some random blotchy lace around the glass as it quickly sinks out of sight.

It smells of tart red berries, musty wood, dry vanilla beans, further acidic grape fruity notes, white wine vinegar, and a very minor earthy and grassy green hop bitterness. The taste is almost bracingly tart mixed fruit (apple, lemon, and generic berries), a semi-sweet vanillan woody essence, gritty and grainy pale malt, a subtle caramel thing, white wine lees, more plain vinegar, a hint of funky yeastiness, and more understated leafy, weedy, and grassy 'verdant' hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite low-key in its put-upon frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and sort of smooth, once I gave the ol' cognitive dissonance generator a gentle whack to get 'er firing on all cylinders. It finishes off-dry, the blended vino fruitiness, hovering tartness, and oaken orgy all lingering like they got no better place to go.

Overall - I do appreciate how this offering morphed over its lifespan, in that the initial heady tartness is eventually balanced by sugary fruit, malt, and wood alike. More complicated than complex, but that's all right, they did a bang-up job in integrating the near ten points of wowee sauce, and for that, we should all be grateful.

Hazy amber, lightening towards the bottom of the glass, topped by a soft bubbly blanket.

Smell is oak, mature vinegar, grape, and grass.

Taste is aged dark cherry, grape, peach, and grapefruit with a nice showcase of various oak notes.

Acidic, might as well call it acetic sour, and semi-dry.

not quite as compelling as some of the other sang series beers, and almost seemingly a different base, a lighter golden sour rather than the more heavy and red winey sangs we have seen more commonly until now. this is bright and strong and sharp and sweet, with flavors of honey and frosted flakes on the front end with champagne tartness and chardonnay acidity, winey, but more oak than wine for me, as much s the element weasels its way to the fore. its pretty sour, bacterial first and funky things next, way clean though, and sort of over the top oak tannins that make this seem insanely mature but almost to a fault. peach and pear and apricot in the yeasts, but this tastes unfruited, and even the oak ha a wine taste, but i swear this is all neutral wood. subtle citrus, fluttery sourness, delicacy around, but a beer that i think pales in comparison overall to the other sang series beers, its just a little less intricate and unique, but its right tasty, and i am glad to see it flowing freely from the tap at goed zuur, the best new beer spot in denver...
