Notes / Commercial Description:
This NW style sour blond ale was barrel aged for up to nine months, then aged on fresh apricot for an additional six months. Aromas of sweet apricot blossoms and tart fruit are present as you draw the glass near. Deep, rich apricot flesh, then tart apricot notes dance on the palate and lead to a sweet apricot flesh finish with a lingering fruit tartness.

2011 Project 7.76% ABV. 750ml bottle served in a Russian River stemmed glass. Cork removed with a loud pop.

Appearance: Golden honey in color. Slightly hazy. A ton of visible carbonation streaming throughout the glass. Poured with about 1 finger of a slightly off white head (nice retention and lacing too)

Smell: Lots of lactic sourness, white grape, apricot, peach, slight oak and funk.

Taste: Big sour punch right at the front of the tongue that sticks around through the finish. More flavors of white grape, oak, apricot, vinegar. Acidic but not overwhelming.

Mouthfeel: Medium/light bodied. Medium carbonation. Soft creamy mouthfeel. Sour dry finish. Very slight alcohol warmth.

Overall: Another great sour from Cascade. The apricot was a bit more toned down than I was hoping for, but this is still an excellent beer. I'd probably put this one slightly below some their others I've had though.

Cloudy dark orange with a thin, wispy white head that's quick to dissipate. Big apricot aroma that's slightly sour. Massive wallop of tartness and sourness in the taste, again with apricot the most prevalent, skins and all. Medium bodied with a little carbonation and slight creaminess when swallowing. This doesn't mess around.

Pours a hazy orange-golden color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of tart medium fruits - apricots and pears. Also present are hints of light and indistinct malts and even lighter hints of spicy oak.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Light malt flavors kick things off before being overwhelmed by medium fruit flavors - apricots and pears as with the aroma. The tartness is toned down a bit from the aroma but is still fairly large. Midway through the sip the tartness fades just a bit as oak flavors work their way into things. The fruit flavors take back over before a crisp and moderately tart ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without any problems and could have another.

Overall I was a pretty big fan of this beer - it's not my favorite from Cascade but for a middle-of-the-road beer from a brewery they're doing pretty well. Worth a shot.

2009 bottling per the label, courtesy of mrand01 from our in person trade yesterday.

Pours a nice deep golden honey color with a thick cream colored 2 inch head on top and plenty of tiny carbonation bubbles.

Aromas begin quite lactic and acidic with plenty of fruity smells; apricot obviously but it also almost smells like peaches. I've heard apricots smell and taste like peaches when added to a beer. The sourness is def also present like fresh green unripened apples with a hint of oak barrel.

The tastes begin with sweet apricot immediately met with sour acidity. The oak and fruit provide a fair amount of tannins which dry out the beer quite a bit; pretty sour but not overly so that becomes a sipper or you need a glass of water.

The carbonation is quite high on the mouthfeel and the beer is very dry, especially on the finish, which I like in this style. Less sweet and quite dry; the way a fruity Belgian Flanders should be. Crazy high drinkability for 9.0%ABV. Not that I am going to but I could pound this if I had to; carbonation might slow me down but just saying...

Overall this is my first Cascade sour and I couldn't be happier with it; also my first apricot sour. Very enjoyable but just like all sours I will only really crave/want them on these crazy hot summer days when normal heavy beer is just undrinkable. Do I have to drink this again, no, but would I, definitely. Blows all that crap Lindemans brews way out of the water.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip. This is a 2011 bottle.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a touch of haze and a strong effervescence. Head is two fingers of frothy, fizzy ivory foam. A good looking beer!

Smell: sweet aroma with a light sourness and a touch of farmhouse funk. The apricot comes through nicely but is not overpowering at all. It has a very natural quality to it.

Taste: a nice moderate sourness and a light funk start off the flavor, which then reveals a rather strong sweetness and a good apricot flavor, which blends well with the acidity. As the other elements begin to fade away, the tartness reestablishes itself on the palate. A nicely dynamic flavor, although it's not super-complex. I like it.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a big carbonation and a mouth-filling if evanescent creaminess. Works for me!

Overall: this is a tasty and very refreshing beer; insanely drinkable for its high ABV. I happen to love well-done fruit sours, and this beer is no exception. This is where I eschew objectivity and just say that this is a beer that really works for me; love it!

A: poured an ice tea brown with a thin head and good sticky lacing on the glass.

S: I'm getting more of a acetic aroma with very faint apricots and oak notes in the mix. I kinda get a little vinegar as well after a couple whiffs.

T: mild tart acetic apricot backbone with oak accents like the nose but not really to sweet to throw off the balance in the beer.

M: Meduim body beer with good bubbly carbonation that adds tingles to the flavor.

D: I always enjoy cascade beers and this one is no exception. Glad that I've been able to try this brew a couple times.

A - pours a hazy golden-light orange with a white head and some lace. No bubbles.

S - soft and pleasant aroma of apricot and faint vinegar. Not much more.

T - is like the aroma, except much more impressive. Delicious. Apricot with a moderately sour finish.

M - light-medium body with a nice bubbly feel. Mouth watering after a few sips. It does very nice things to my tongue in several locations. Semi-dry and unmistakably sour with a long sour sustain.

O - another well crafted fruit sour from Cascade. It's a pleasure to drink and should satisfy anyone who likes sour fruit ales. This one doesn't have much contribution from the barrel, but I don't care, because it tastes great.

Fresh bottle in 2012 (2011 Project). Unibroue tulip glass. Pours orange with fizzy and quickly receding head. Smell is sour vinegar with a hint of citrus and apricot (as expected). Major sour flavor from beginning to end. Very slight fruit flavor that seems mostly overpowered by the sour vinegar. Perhaps this mellows and highlights the fruit as it ages? Light bodied with high effervescent carbonation. Just was hoping for more fruit. Way overpriced at $20 a bottle for what it is, but a solid beer overall. I think I just wanted more apricot, because the dry sourness is pretty awesome. Good beer.

This ale appears a hazy light yellow/orange hue. There is a small head that leaves a tiny amount of lacing on the glass. The aromas consist of funky brettanomyces, oak, and slightly sweet fruits (apricot). This beer has plenty of flavor. The wood is very noticeable in both the aroma and the taste. The beer is mostly sour, but does have a subtle sweet note in there as well. This is a really good beer. It's complex and the flavors are well-balanced. I'd like to have it again.

Appearance: Pours a hazy tangerine color, capped by one finger of white head. Head retention is pretty good, and the lacing is pretty decent.

Smell: I get lots of citrus initially on the nose, as well as some dried apricot scents. I can definitely detect some lactic sourness in there too. It's not over the top or overly complex, but very pleasing.

Taste: Extremely good. Lots of apricot and citrus flavors up front with almost some caramelized sugar type flavors as well. Great funk and lactic presence follows, with pretty strong apricot and light funk on the finish. Pretty damn solid.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with a low to moderate amount of carbonation. I enjoyed the hell out of this beer, and would most definitely have it again. I would love to get hold of a bottle or two.

Enjoyed at the barrel house in Portland, OR on 9/2/12

A: Pours out a very pale yellow color. It's fairly cloudy. I get a mild bright white lacing when I swirl it, but the head on the small pours is basically not there.

S: On the nose, I get that acidic sourness. A good amount of that tart green apple and then a sweetness from the Apricot I assume.

T: Taste follows the nose: Green apples, white grape juice, stinging sourness. The Apricots are there adding some sweetness to the tart fruit juice flavors. Don't get tons of oak on this one, but whats there adds some roundness to the brew. Softens the edges.

M: Light bodied, dry finish.

750 purchased from the brewpub back in November .. I've been sitting on this one for too long... poured into my Chimay goblet..

1" head dies back quick.. not a great cap.. and only little lacing.. I guess that is sorta expected with the acidity and the higher ABV.. the brew is hazy lite orange.

The nose is more fruity than sour.. sorta smells like the bottom of a apricot basket in the heat of summer (in a good way :-) Obvious apricot and a significant amount of sour..

Flavor is better.. It is amazing how much better apricots work better on the palate than the nose.. flavor is sorta jammy for about a quarter second.. Then the sour hits with a lactic slam.. not acetic like the blackberry.. the palate reminds me of yellow cling peach essence and fresh apricot skin.

The body is way heavier than most American sours.. but it honestly helps with the thick fruitiness on this one.. The carbonation combined with the acid sorta sucks the saliva from my mouth.. It is by no means dry. just sour from the fruit and the lactic additions.. Drinkablity take a hit on my book just because it is sorta heavy AND sour.. subtract carefully either element and it helps.. but now... on this nearly 9% bottle.. and this is a sipper that I really probably should have shared with somebody else.

Hugely interesting.. and the backbone beer actually shows through with the triple maltiness.. and helps everything tie together quite well.

2009 bottling. 9,0% alc/vol. 750ml brown bottle shared with friends. Clear amber with a white head. I really like this peachy nose, apricot candy. Some acidity on the nose. The fuzzy peach taste is very interesting. Easy drinking, light and refreshing. This is a classic to be.

2008 bottle, poured into a tulip glass... 9% Alc. as listed.

- Slightly cloudy on the second pour, white foamy head about an inch thick down to a steady 1/4" at all times.. copper/amber color.

- Great tart and ester smell.. little bit of vinegar, apricot, grape and peach.. little bit of candy sweetness, and oak.

- Warming but yet very sour and tasty.. the alcohol is well hidden and this has some of the best oak barrel notes I have tasted. Very good for its style.

- Tart sourness left on the lips, and a clean palate in the mouth.. overall very good, and leaves no dryness...

- Other than being a bit bubbly like a sparkling wine (as it should for the style) its very drinkable, and I downed the whole bottle... very good.

Appearance
Hazy gold with 2 fingers of white head. Better than average retention for a sour. Low-moderate carbonation. Very find lacing drips down the glass.

Nose
Apricot, Sweet Tarts, peach, nectarine, lactic acid and oak.

Taste
Big lactic sourness and vinegar upfront. Juicy apricots, peach and pink lemonade. Some nectarine and Sweet Tarts. Bready notes underneath with drizzles of caramel and chestnut. Just a touch of French oak on the finish.

Mouthfeel
Light bodied, clean and refreshing with a moderate-heavy sourness.

Overall
Very potent stuff. Excellent sourness with big juicy fruits. Very easy drinking and complex. Yummers! :)

Great smell of just a bit of apricot and tart sourness. Taste was sour, tart, finishing with apricot sourness. Mouth feel was crisp and decently full bodied. Could have used a decent amount more of ripened apricot. Great none the less.

Sampled June 2009
A solid pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet glass produces a three finger thick, light tan colored head that slowly subsides in to a persistent, dense, creamy layer of foam that resides atop the beer. The beer is a bright copper hue that shows a brilliantly clear, beautiful, orange-gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of fresh, floral, ripe apricots, not quite as exuberant in volume as an actual rip apricot, but it definitely captures the essence quite well. The aroma has me picturing myself biting into a perfectly ripe apricot that is sweet and tart with a bit of tannic character in the skin. There is not a whole lot of other, more beery notes going on here, but the fleshy, skin scented apricot notes are so alive and fresh here that I am finding the nose quite interesting. The nice thing is that apricots are not a in your face fruit, so even though they are the dominant note here in the nose it is still not a loud, in-your face apricot character. After the beer has warmed up for a bit there is perhaps a touch of dough-like malt in the nose, but it is still quite subtle if not down right fleeting.

The beer is lightly tart tasting and is infused with a floral, almost flower-nectar essence of apricots. The beer finishes with a touch of a tannic bit as well as a wisp of higher alcohols and some spiciness that seems to be influenced by spicy oak notes and a touch of wood-character. The finish doesn't shake the infused apricot essence that perfumes the whole of this beer though. The lactic tartness, while present and noticeable, really serves to accentuate the fruit character here; it melds with the fresh fruit notes and intertwines with it in such a way that one really just imagines the tartness of a biting into a fresh, perfectly ripe, apricot. There is a bit of a bite to the finish here, a bitterness from the hops used in the Tripel. There are also some warming alcohol notes here in the finish, but they are quite mellow for a Tripel, more contributing to the general spiciness than anything. There is just enough residual sweetness here to boost the fruit flavor just that much more; I wouldn't describe this as a sweet beer, though it isn't bone dry either. The finish is quite dry, but still has a floral, flower-nectar note to it that lingers on in the palate along with a clean, peppery spice note.

The second pour has a bit more haziness to it, which corresponds with a touch of a yeast bite. I really like the balance between floral, fruity apricot flavors and the spicy, bitter, peppery finish, these notes balance together quite well and even lead into the next sip, thus continuing the cycle of flavors. The body is light enough to be dangerously quaffable, it is well within the Tripel range though (for instance it is not as light as something like a Duvel that is at the same strength). A hint of phenolics become noticeable and they subtly tie in with the spicy finish. I like how the oak plays a truly supporting role here, it adds to the tannic structure and the spiciness of the finish, but isn't overtly noticeable.

This seems to have rounded & softened up a bit since I tasted this back in October. It is much more fruit focused, or at least some of the sharper phenolic notes seem to have aged out such that the fruit is much more noticeable. It is still not overly funky, in fact it is arguably not very complex (except that it does achieve a complex apricot character), but it is such a great use of this particular fruit; it is certainly the quintessential apricot beer that I have had. As a show case for the use of fruit in beer it easily out shines the sticky sweet New Glarus stuff by a long mile. If you like apricots and I mean you are a stickler for only enjoying fresh, abundantly ripe ones, then this is the beer for you.

The beer pours with a pale gold color that is quite clear. It is topped by a pale, white colored ring of a head with a careful pour. The aroma is quite fruity, as expected, but also has as significant floral and even almost herbal edge to it in the finish. The apricot is noticeable, but not overly expressive. There is a light sourness to the aroma as well and the fruit notes remind me of a mix of apricot and Meyer lemon.

The beer is quite dry, pretty light bodied, definitely tart and has a nice aromatic-flavor of apricots; the apricot character is fleshy, almost juicy in quality. This finishes with some phenolic notes in the finish that adds a light, biting sharpness and there is also a bit of astringency. The phenolics contribute a mix of notes of curing plastic and a pale smokiness, though these are kept fairly muted. This is quite drinkable and really hides its alcohol quite well, I wouldn't have guessed that the base beer, before souring and fruit, was a Tripel. It could use a bit more complexity to be truly great, but it is quite drinkable and tasty.

Cascade Apricot is a nice orange hued beer with some spots of faded gold within the liquid. The cap was about an inch in height and off white in height. It dwindles eventually into nothing, leaving no stick on the glass. After a while the liquid looks kind of dead. Smell is of fresh apricot pith, this is an extremely fresh bottle that just touched down in Philly, not sure how long it was in the bottle before I opened it immediately. Warmed up, apricot, pale malt, some lactic quailty and no alcohol. It's a pleasant smell, just not all together bold. Taste is pretty balanced, expecting a sour bomb I am greeted by fresh apricot, orange, pale malt, french oak and some lactic funk. The wood shows up more towards warming with orange popping out as well melding in with the apricot. Feel is a step below medium, the funk and apricot hit the tounge and leave off with light malt and lactic twinges. Carb is surprisingly low, but I guess that works with the acidic nature of cascade, which is heavy on the lacto/acidic nature of their sours. While not all that extremely sour, this is a pleasant beer that I think others could open up to, especially girls.

A - Pours a hazy peachish orange with very little foam to speak of
S - nice sour aroma with the apricots coming through along with some lemon
T - The taste has some pucker to it, a mix of apricots and lemon
M - crisp carbonation, medium bodied, a bit muted flavor, it seems to leave quickly
D - very drinkable, I just can't get enough of this beer. I'd be interested in trying some other years to compare

A - Orange with a clean slightly syrupy body. Nice white head

S - Sweet apricot with light tartness to it

T - Tart lactic acid up front. Sweet apricot comes through in the middle. The lactic acid comes more in the finish.

M - Light carbonation with good tartness. Dry finish

750ml bottle into Old Rasputin nonic glass. 2009 vintage.

A: Pours a slightly hazy, well...apricot color actually, with a billowing off-white head that frothed up quickly in the glass. It settled nicely after a few minutes into a foamy thick film that left a pretty epic sheet of lacing down the glass. Impressive.
S: Sugary sweet notes of apricots with a touch of dank barnyard musk and a light citrusy tartness. The smell is amplified after each pour and is especially perfumey and floral at times. Very inviting.
T: Not as sweet as the nose but the apricots are right there to balance out the mustiness. The finish is both refreshingly tart and funky sour. The oak barrel comes out in the finish along with some of the Belgian spices and even a hint of bitter hops from the base Tripel. Aftertaste is
M: Medium body, full yet soft carbonation and a semi-dry finish. Alcohol is completely masked.
D: Really liked the nose on this one, and the flavor and drink ain't half bad either. Pretty great all around, can't wait to try more Cascade beers!

2011, 7.76%, 750ml... cork took some effort to extract. Pours a hazy amber with one finger thick dense white head, settles to a thin ring leaving a couple of rings down the glass. Smell: acetic, oak, a little hay-heavy barnyard funk, apricot. Taste: fruited vinegar, vanilla; tartness backed by sugary dried apricot.

Relatively quiet pop of the composite cork that was a pliers-size bitch to get out of the corked & caged 750 bottle. Hell, the cage was wicked tight, too - wire handle a little too small. Either way, it's going into a Duvel tulip.

There's not a lot of head here - just a few light bubbly wisps above a...well...apricot-colored...body (at least slightly). Slight honey and bourbon tones, too. A few extremely slow wisps of carbonation. The wisps stay for a while and leave a little decent lace.

Nice beastie smell layered and well-blended with huge apricot essence, with a little bit of added muscat notes. Huge yeast electricity and raw grains make this an enjoyable scent.

It's dry...of course it is...but not as dry as, say, something like Fou Fonne, which is Dust Bowl dry. A smidge of residual apricot sweetness melds with a dry balsa wood/oak complement, and the light Belgian malts provide the appropriate backbone.

Palate feel provides great acidity along with the oak/lacto combination. Apricot ripeness preclude the supreme pucker we would otherwise expect; hops? Not really part of the equation - perhaps a mild addition of Styrian Goldings but that's about it. Good Belgian pale malt character along with an extra dry sweet & sour notion.

This one works. It works slowly, but it works. Just what I was in the mood for...something less dry than Brute yet less beefy than the bottle of Consecration I have downstairs.

A - The cork blew off this one and hit the ceiling. Very hazy orange color, nice big head that disappeared really quickly and didn't leave a ton of lacing.

S - Wow, this is the most apricoty beer I have ever tasted. Smells like fresh, or maybe dry apricots, not the artificial stuff that a lot of these apricot beers smell like.

T - Apricot taste dominates. It's slightly sour, but there's a big apricot sweetness that takes over everything else. It's a very natural apricot taste that is nice and sweet and a great lambic take on the fruit itself.

M - Medium bodied, syrupy, nice carbonation.

D - Surprised this is over 8% abv. For that reason it is pretty drinkable, but the syrupy sweetness keeps it from getting super drinkable.

Hazy platinum with no head.
Apricot fruit roll-up on the nose with a touch of white vinegar.
JuicyFruit, bright orchard fruit, a touch of funk, lemon zest and a bit of chalk.
Bracing fresh fruity finish and white spice linger.
Crisp, light, no heat.

Champagne-like. White vinegar and Belgian funk hidden under fruit, but still very acidic, in a good way. Probably the most accessible sour ever.
