Notes / Commercial Description:
This NW style sour blond ale was barrel aged for up to nine months, then aged on fresh apricot for an additional six months. Aromas of sweet apricot blossoms and tart fruit are present as you draw the glass near. Deep, rich apricot flesh, then tart apricot notes dance on the palate and lead to a sweet apricot flesh finish with a lingering fruit tartness.

The 2015 edition pours a slightly hazy amber with a long lasting off white head. Lots of bubble action. Aroma: sour grain & oak. Taste is initially sour & salty but not overwhelming. Flavor is apricots & peaches & hints of mild funk & barrel flavors. Very interesting how the flavor attacks the roof of the mouth first & works it’s way down with the sourness & carbonation lingering on the tongue. Very mouth watering. Paired with a funky cheese like aged gruyere it’s just incredible.

Mostly clear gold with a fuzzy, persistent blanket and creamy lace all over the glass.

The aroma consists of fresh apricot and peach, as well as a sort of sticky spice, wine oak, and a hint of carrot.

Slightly stinging, semi-dry sour notes of lemon spritzed apricot with sharp oak nearing white wine vinegar without becoming overly acetic.

There seems to be a theme with these Cascade sours having great, medium to full, perfect bodies and carbonation, and this is no exception.

Reviewed from notes. 2013 label vintage, reviewed in February 2016. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter.

A: Golden apricot in color, and hazy. A good amount of visible carbonation and a finger of white head fades quickly.

S: A big punch of apricots and peaches up front. Lactobacillus tartness and funk and some horse blanket. The aroma has a nice depth to it, rather than the one-note-Lacto that some of the Cascade offerings have. There’s some cracker malts and a hint of funky feet underneath, but the apricot and Lacto tartness dominate here.

T: Apricots, Lacto, and tart citric acid. Some funk with notes of cheese and feet. Possibly some Brettanomyces-derived dryness as well. Nice balance with the fruitiness, that has notes of peaches and lighter pineapple. The cracker malt peeks out just a little. It finishes with a lingering dried apricots and a puckering dryness, but stops short of having the gum-burning acidity.

M: The body is a bit to the heavy side for style, but offset by being very well-carbonated. Alcohol presence seems fairly low.

O: I really liked this one. I think this seems better than any other Cascade I've had to date. A nice depth to the sour and funk – maybe not as much as the best of sours, but really good. I shall have to seek out more of this. I still have a 2011 sitting, and it will be interesting to compare for sure.

NOTE:
Scores given are for the above bottle. Differences found in a 2014 label vintage bottle below.
A: Surprisingly low level of visible carbonation.
S: Less funk, more fruit, and has more oaky character.
T: More fruit-forward.
M: Similar to above.
O: A bit different, but still very tasty. Interestingly, I ended up scoring them identically.

Appearance - The beer pours a golden yellow color with a white head.

Smell - The nose would be best described as a nondescript sour nose.

Taste - The nose is best described as a well balanced sour with oak and fresh apricots. The beer is well balanced and not acidic like many trendy sours. The fruit is very evident.

Mouthfeel - For the style, the beer is rich and full bodied.

Overall - Cascade really knows how to do the style.

2013 bottle shared with friends. Pours healthy and lively, releasing an outrageous aroma of fruit, yeast, spice and funk. The taste is brutally sour, a pucker-your-mouth assault on the senses. Close to vinegar, but more gentle. I alternatively loved and hated it, and definitely could not drink any more than a small glass. Overall unique and tasty, but only for true sour fans.

Bottle with a buddy. We both poured into tulips. My observations: the appearance was a transparent golden color with a slim amount of carbonation bubbles rising at a slow pace. Finger’s worth of white foamy head slid off fairly quick. Not much lace. The aroma had a nice blend of sweet to tart apricots, lactic behavior, sweet wood, smooth sweet grassiness, a touch of pine needle, light floral tones, and a little bit of white grape/vinous quality at the end, acceptable. The flavor blended the sour to the tart to the sweet very nicely. Apricots with a little bit of vinous and oaky tones run over some hay to semi-dry grassy aspects to guide into the aftertaste and slide into the finish. The palate was almost medium bodied, seemed to sit just a touch under and creating a pretty good sipping quality about it since the acidity did seem to produce the expected harshness I got, but wasn’t too bad. Carbonation did feel on par and the ABV felt just a touch under, but wasn’t too far off, maybe closer to 7%. Overall, lucked out on getting this one. Good thing my buddy paid for this.
