Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This NW style sour blond ale was barrel aged for up to nine months, then aged on fresh apricot for an additional six months. Aromas of sweet apricot blossoms and tart fruit are present as you draw the glass near. Deep, rich apricot flesh, then tart apricot notes dance on the palate and lead to a sweet apricot flesh finish with a lingering fruit tartness.

Clear golden with a fluffy white head. Amazing floral apricot, candy sugar, and caramel aroma with vanilla and oak notes. Creamy very bright and yet lively palate. Tastes of orange, apricot, lemon, caramel, green apple, vanilla, and oak with a tart, lightly acidic, crisp, dry finish.

Reviewed from notes from 12/14/13. Enjoyed out of a dark brown 750 mL cork & cage bottle with "2012 project" marked clearly on the label. Poured into a 16 oz standard tumbler glass for lack of anything better.

Appearance - The color is pretty flat, with an apricot, light yellow-orange hue to the body. Some translucence, but overall, you can't see through the beer, as it's mostly opaque. Head is fairly light in volume, about a finger thick before fading away into an ethereal film atop the body. Minimal lacing.

Smell - Apricot, lactic tartness, and generic fruity elements with some notes of jam/preserves. Mostly sour, but there is a funk that provides a bit of heft to an otherwise piercingly acidic aroma. It's the type of sinus-clearing aroma that I love about really sour beers. The only minor quibble I would have is that it's a bit one-dimensional, sorta like the color.

Taste - Here we depart from the one-dimensional nature of the color and smell. Lots of things going on here, with apricot, mango, some apple cider vinegar, again some notes of peach preserves/jam as well as sweet white wine, like a sauterne or muscato. Nice mouth-puckering effect that becomes more pronounced as the beer warms. This one is nicely refreshing in addition to being so sour, almost like a really tart apricot lemonade.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium body with nice prickliness in spite of moderate to light levels of carbonation. As noted, there is a puckering factor, as well as characteristics that prompt me to start salivating, like really sour things can have a tendency to do.

Overall, it's probably my favorite out of a limited sampling of Cascade beers. What minor shortcomings it has in look and smell, it more than makes up for with a fantastic taste and a nice, invigorating mouthfeel. As one of the more reasonably-priced Cascade beers, it's one I'm likely to try to get my hands on again. Outstanding stuff.
