Draft at the Barrel House. 2015 vintage at 10.1% ABV. Pale, clear golden with big foamy head. Light bodied and light on the palate, but the grapes also lend a lot of flavor, think white grape juice on steroids. Aroma and flavor lean on the grapes, initial tartness dries out on the back end.

Slightly hazy orange color with almost no head. Aroma has unripe stonefruits, lemon but also a vanilla sweetness from the barrel aging. Taste is sour and acidic with unripe fruit notes. Quite refreshing yet intense on the flavors and easy to drink.

Pours fizzy orange with an equally fizzy head that's gone almost immediately.

The nose is white wine, sour grape, apple, pear, and funk.

This is the least sour of the Cascade beers I've had. The taste up front largely follows the nose. Green apple and white wine. Very balanced for 10% ABV. Oak and orange-y malts mid-palate. Drying on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium. Way more balanced than I expected.

Beautifully shimmering rare earth golden body with a thin, fuzzy collar.

I can smell Tripel-esque notes of spice and ester coming through with hints of Belgian candi and caramel. However, wheat, oak, nougat, and the botanics of an aromatic forest make their mark and bring this into a realm of its own.

Taste steps further away from the Tripel, with mature and sour grape, pear and funky, fruity oak.

This has become kind of watery and is lacking carbonation with a slick feel and dry chewy finish.

750ml caged and corked bottle (the 2015 Project), @10.1% ABV. I sure do like me some Gewurztraminer!

This beer pours (it was a gusher, but I caught it just in time!) a slightly hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, very loosely foamy, and mainly fizzy off-white head, which leaves but a few specks of remote islet lace around the glass as it quite quickly abates.

It smells of tart lemon, green grape, and red apple fruitiness, gritty and grainy wheat malt, a mild earthy funkiness, gentle toasted oak notes, and a bit of wet hay/straw bitterness. The taste is bready and doughy pale malt, a lesser edgy wheatiness, white wine vinegar, sour apples and lemons, a thankfully restrained barnyard funk character, fruity green grapes on lees, a very tame wet barrel stave woodiness, and further understated earthy, hay-like, and musty bitters.

The carbonation is average in its palate-baiting frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and sort of smooth, as the hovering tartness kind of has that expected downer effect here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and fruity essences (in all their inherent yin and yang) predominating.

Overall, this is a fairly tasty and engaging version of the style, with the white wine doing well to complement, rather than overwhelm the base sour ale. Not yet mentioned is the surprisingly AWOL north of 22-proof alcohol measure, which is a testament to the brewing prowess on display, I would imagine. Great stuff.

Beware the wild yeast !
Looks give lots of foam and very quickly ... then all settles down into a sipping experience.
Smells are mostly the wine grapes, plus all that sour.
Tastes are both slightly sweet and then really sour. And while they come and go, sour wins.
Feel has very active carbonation, champagne-like; with an interesting tug between sweet and dry.
Overall, I brought it to a party of wine drinkers and got lots of turn-down faces, a few raised eye-brows and no converts. (But then, I am hardly a sour evangelist... being shy about those styles.)

Listed on the "1001 Beers To Have Before You Die", I think it probably should be there for making the difficult bridge between wine and beer. Glad I Had this one, but probably not again.

Poured from the 750 ml bottle. 2015 Project.

Initially foams out of the bottle rather quickly so have this over a glass immediately as it has wild yeast. Pours a golden straw color with a thin, white head the dissipates instantly. Carbonation is that of champagne and a very fine ring of head clings to the sides of the glass. Lacing is present as I sip, however it does not still to the sides of he glass, it falls back into the beer level.

Smells of lactobacillous, funky white wine, white balsamic.

Tastes initially sweet like moscato but quickly changes direction into tart deliciousness. Very acidic, but quite flavorful.

Feels very prickly from the high carbonation level, and the acidity stings the tongue a bit. Does not drink like a 10.1% beer.

Overall a very well done American Wild Ale from Cascade. One of the best sour blondes I've had in a long time. I really enjoy what they do up there in Oregon and will continue to try their offerings whenever I can.

Cheers!
