Draught
Brewer's Fork
Boston

Deep dark brown pour with lot's of wood, cherry, sweet funk. Restrained tartness with lot's of fruit. Marzipan and vanilla. Drinks like it's 4% but still has appropriate body.

Beyond the layered oak barrels, the sour character evokes a good Flemish brown like La Folie. Notes of nut, caramel, and cherry create the canvas; while the nuanced oak provides the cherry on top. The flavor profile is similarly brilliant. Initial flavors of tart cherry and caramel pop nicely - lacto is very well executed. Caramel trails off into the oaky finish, along with vanilla and coconut. The hints of deep, dark fruit from port barrels end up being the X Factor, giving it insane depth in the process. This isn't some brute force sour, that's for sure. It feels shockingly crisp and light on the palate, with a liveliness that utterly belies it's 8.4%. Shame it's so pricey, because it's unbelievably stunning...

4.32/5: Who needs monster sourness when you showcase barrels this effectively?

Beer from Cask served about 10degrees C.
Rich and deep reddish burgundy colour. Light reddish tan head. Aroma of red wine an oak barrels. Tasted of dark cherries, vanilla and oak with moderate sourness. Soft and relatively light body. Infinitely drinkable if it were not for the 10.1 ABV which it hide exceedingly well. Very much enjoyed.

Tons of oak, and sour cherries. Coming off the heels of drinking a 13% ABV Oud Bruin, this smells deceptively like an Oud Bruin, but the big matted red "Cascade" label is laughing at me and telling me I'm wrong. Upon second whiff, there's also hints of dark fruit, vanilla, and sweet wine; all signs point to a barrel-aged sour.

Huge flavors of sour red berries and oak inundate the tongue upon first sip. Secondary flavors pretty much mirror the aroma, with subtle hints of raisins, figs, port wine, and vanilla as well. The flavor profile turns slightly more intense as the beer warms up as darker flavors of tobacco and earth come out to play.

Medium-bodied and spirited in terms of carbonation. Despite the high ABV, the brew finishes very crisp and dry with no signs of an alcohol burn (or maybe I'm that drunk?). Overall the flavor profile reminds me a lot of Russian River Brewing Company's Consecration, if it were supercharged/further aged in oak barrels.

On-tap at Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Portland, OR

A: The beer is hazy dark red in color. It poured with a thick collar consisting of off white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Pinot Noir wine are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, and has additional hints of port wine in the finish.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes a lot more a lot like a red wine than a beer, but it has a lighter body and some sourness.

Note: 2015 vintage, live barrel
