Dark cherry red with electric apricot edges and Champagnesque carbonation. The pastel gold head was large to start and looks like bubble bath as it deflates. The lack of a firmly creamy cap, and the fact that it leaves almost nothing of itself on the glass, is partially offset by great looking beer.

The aroma is an outstanding combination of cherries, berries, oak staves and lactic funk. If the beer's flavor is anywhere close to being as deep and as complex as its nose, look the hell out.

Raccoon Lodge and Brewpub Cascade Sang Royal is amazing beer that is kept from being even more amazing by a disappointing mouthfeel (see below). Whatever combination of blending and aging and cherry maceration went on, it worked out splendidly in the end.

The use of lactobacillus qualifies CSR as an American wild ale (per the BA description), but don't pop the cork expecting Brettanomyces horse blanket funk. Given the fruit vinegar vibe, it's more along the lines of a Flanders red ale.

110 pounds of Northwest Bing cherries should have added some sweetness, but the beer is tart, tangy, puckery and drying. Other flavors include a perfect amount of oak barrel woodiness, a red grape quality from the port barrels, lemon juice and cider vinegar. Sorry, but that description doesn't do this brew justice. Simply put... it rocks the house!

Given the style, the ABV and the barrel aging, appearance and mouthfeel deserve some slack. Besides, the initially fizzy carbonation settles down before too long and there's an underlying slickness that keeps things from feeling too light. Also, the cap never fades completely and there's some glass decoration in the end.

Cascade Sang Royal (Royal Blood) is an outstanding effort from a brewery that probably isn't very widely known outside of the Pacific NW. If you have any interest in beer of this sort, do whatever it takes to locate a bottle. Thanks a million to BKIII for sending me this one... just because he's a helluva generous guy.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.

Pours a cloudy reddish dark brown with a layer of off white head that fades to a ring around the pour. Smell is a bit funky with some vinegar and tart wine. The taste is rather sour, I'm getting vinegar and berries. There is some dark funk in the finis. The wine notes are layered nicely. Quite complex.

On-tap at Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Portland, OR

A: The beer is hazy dark red in color. It poured with a thick collar consisting of off white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Pinot Noir wine are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, and has additional hints of port wine in the finish.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes a lot more a lot like a red wine than a beer, but it has a lighter body and some sourness.

Bottle shared by John the other night. I preferred this over the version I had on tap.

Clear dark brown with reddish highlights, there a dense, light brown head with nice lacing. A gorgeous sour. There's a nice, bright raspberry/fruit vinaigrette with a rich fruit, mild cocoa. Quite New Belgium-like in some ways. Leather and earth are present as well. The palate opens quite sour with vinegar, apple cider and raspberry , very bright and tasty. The mid-palate has oak, leather and tannins, with grapes and grape skin tannins. The tannins linger on the finish. Medium in body, medium-light in body, this is excellent.

2009 project. Teku glass.

A: Pours a deep burgundy with hints of brown, an inch of burnt cream colored head which recedes moderately quickly to a sturdy ring. Excellent clarity, very good retention, and a few streaks of lacing.

S: A gorgeous marriage of lactic sourness up front, moderate funk, and a hint of red wine and red fruit and barrel spice.

T: Mouth puckeringly sour, at a medium-high level which stretches out through the finish. Notes of juicy fruit, funk, bright red wine, with a little oak and vanilla on the finish which really brings the flavors together. Clean flavors overall.

M: Fizzy, Pop Rock-like carbonation with medium-light body. Alcohol is extremely well hidden.

O: Excellent. Very drinkable, and I think on par with Sang Noir and other of the better Cascade BA sours.

A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a small, one-finger, khaki colored head of foam. The short-lived head left little to no lacing.

S - It smelled sour with dark cherries and red grape.

T - Great sour flavor punches you in the mouth with tart black cherry flavor. The is a very subtle caramel maltiness.

M - It was crisp and had a high pucker factor. A medium bodied sour ale.

O - This was fantastic. I've had 2 Cascade beers and both have been amazing.

2009 vintage.

Pours a slightly murky honey brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some fruity and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with a woody aftertaste and an acidic finish. This beer has a high level of carbonation with a very crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a great beer with some very nice aromas and flavors.

Picked up a bottle at City Beer Store last week, consumed on Thanksgiving day with dessert, shared with a few family members. Surprisingly, it went over very well.

Dark brown in the glass with ruby red highlights, this is one incredibly turbid beer. The bottle gushed a bit upon being uncorked, and poured with a thick three-finger head that fizzled away like soda until it hit a steady half-inch cap, which retained for the entire hour or so I sipped on my glass.

A funky cherry aroma greets the nose immediately, tart and ripe, both cherry skin and flesh. A wallop of lactic sourness backs it, and as it warms I get a trace of damp earth.

The taste is very lactic and biting up front, green apple and a ton of fresh sour cherries dominating the flavor. The fruit component is awesome. I get a hint of dark malts, but the lactic sourness and fruit flavor are incredibly pervasive. Acetic acids are pretty reserved here; this is all about the sharp lactic sourness, not unlike Russian River's Supplication. Crisp, medium in body but surprisingly refreshing and easy to drink. The finish is mildly tannic, vinous, and quite dry, making me think of a mellow pinot noir (that's gone sour) with a lingering flavor of cherry skin.

This brewery seems to get better with each new beer, this being by far the best I've had from them so far.

750 mL bottle poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass


This gorgeous looking, ember-red brew is one of the more compelling sour beers I've recently imbibed. Layered with complexity and seemingly disparate aspects, everything blends with a delicious singularity on the palate. The nose carries notes of cherries, oak and red wine vinegar, backed by a subtle undertone of grape jelly. The flavors are more tart-forward than the nose portends, but initial puckering sour quickly gives way to unripe berry sweetness and earthy oak. Suggestions of wine reveal themselves throughout the sip, but unlike many grape-infused concoctions, this one never loses is 'beer' foundation. Long finish with lingering notes of earthy oak and citrusy sour.

750mL (2012 project) into a tulip. Pours a deep mahogany w/ a 1/2-finger khaki head.

Aroma is sour cranberries, grapes, oak and vanilla. Sort of like a Flanders oud bruin.

Taste is tart, vinous and woody. Red wine, oak, tannins (a word I don't use often). Just the faintest suggestion of bitter dark chocolate. A touch more acidic than I prefer, but there's a really nice balance between sour and sweet. The oak barrel character is really dominant here.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall a complex, well-built beer. Glad I finally found a bottle of this.

Pours a deep mury brown/red color with a nice off white head that lingers unusually well for the style and leaves ok lacing, good for the style.

Nose is full of lacto bite. Clear cherry and oak in the nose, some almost green appley presence as well, minimal vinegar.

Hmmm. This beer is alot like consecration...only better. Big tartness is melded with oak and cherry flavors, balanced extraordinarily well. There is some vinegar presence, but minimal compared to something flemish in nature, this is clearly a sour wild ale. The finish is bone dry and puckeringly tart. Aftertaste lingers with some flemish notes, cherry, and lacto sourness.

Mouthfeel is perfect for the style, high in carbonation and minimally viscous. Very dry and crisp on the finish.

Drinkability is really rather remarkable for the abv. Barely makes its presence known at all. The major lactic bite is there, keep in mind, but style wise, this is nearly as drinkable as they get.

Overall, yet another very impressive cascade wild ale. Really a wild ale with some slight flemish overtones. These guys are quickly becoming the under the radar authority on sour beers in the northwest, and rival the other west coast big boys with some of their offerings. It's too bad their stuff is so limited, because it really is a treat. Great beer.

2009 Vintage, Poured Sep 2014

Pours a deep brown, ruby red color, hazy with a short-lived bubbly tan head with no lacing. Big tart nose here, loaded with sour cherries, lemon rind, a bit of funk. On the palate, the first sip assaults the sour taste buds on the back of ones tongue; it is an intense blast of vinegar! The flavor does transition nicely though, especially as the beer and my palate opens up and the subtleties come through, again, sour cherries, grape skins, oak, wet wood, and vinous notes. The body is medium and the carbonation keeps it light. This was a really interesting beer.

2009 barrel project poured into snifter.

A: Pours a deep mahogany with a finger of dark brown head that quickly faded to a lasting film and thick collar that lasted the whole beer through. A few spots of soapy lace were left down the glass.
S: Musty notes of red fruits and vinous red wine. I get hints of cranberry, current, port, candied dates, and raisins. Mild leather and maybe some brown sugar.
T: Full robust flavor. Red berries and musty wine barrel dominate. Hints of cranberry juice, currents and red grape are noticeable, with sweet hints of port, dates, and greasy oak in the finish. The aftertaste is full of port, raisins, slight leather, earth, and blueberries. Very mellow and integrated flavors with a complex barrel profile. Acidity is moderate with a tart pedio bite.
M: Full body, greasy and thick mouthfeel, with a drying tart bite and soft, low carbonation.
O: Didn't know what to expect after waiting so long to open this. It is fantastic. Definitely reminds me of consecration. Complex and robust flavors. Really smooth and delicious.

A - Murky, color of cooked dark brown sugar, small off white head, leaves to disk fast. Not much cling.

S - Funk is all I get out of it. But, it's lively and fresh.

T - Beautiful. Sour, funky, bright, pleasant.

M - Medium body, great carb, balance is well played so that the sour funkiness calms down by finish.

D - Very easy to drink , especially at that ABV!

One of *the* toughest corks to remove that I've come across followed by a huge pop, it pours a murky dark rusty brown with a +1 finger head of offwhite foam. It looks to have some good lacing.

The smell is hugely and nicely sour with lots of cherry tart and green apple goodness. Sticking my nose further in the glass, I'm getting some earthy malty notes and some light fruity sweetness. Peaking in and out, there's a definite note of the oak influence. Wow, this smells great!

The taste is big cherry and green apple sour with a touch of some malty or is it fruity? sweet tones, light earthy malt, a bigger oakiness than what was in the smell, a dash of vanilla here and there, with another big blast of the yummy sourness near and through the finish...it makes me smack my mouth in a very good way. I'm liking sipping on this puppy as it's so flavourful and the alcohol is a not noticeable at all.

Medium bodied with fairly high carbonation, it's a very smooth sipping American Wild Ale.

Drinkability? It's a big bottle but it's really so tasty and alcohol non obtrusive that it won't be a chore at all to finish. This is a super well made brew that fans of the style should hold in high regard. Thanks again, Kevin!

A: Opaque red with a nice tan head.

S: Cherries and sweet port wine.

T: Good and tart but not more so than cantillon blabaer. Still though, a good kick in the glands. Fairly dry but a hint of port sweetness. Clearly a tart sour driven beer though.

M: Thin like a wild should be.

D: Pretty damn good. Among the better American wild ales I've had.

750ml cork'n'cage of the 2009 project, poured into an Old Engine Oil tulip. Huge thanks to Dan for sharing this sour treat.

A: Clear deep crimson body with a half inch of creamy off-white head. Ok retention, spotty lace. Not bad.

S: Pure, intense lactic sourness, with a hint of grape skin. Very, very acidic. I love it.

T: Starts out sour, then opens up into some nice grape juice sweetness, and finally closes out with intense, pure, puckering tartness. Awesome.

M: Fairly light body with late-arriving carbonation. Ok.

O: This isn't the beer for you if you want delicacy and complexity, but if you love straight tongue-ripping sourness, then seek it out. Terrific stuff.

Served into a snifter

A: Dark ruby amber colored body, hazy and cloudy with no head to speak of. Absolutely no lace or retention bubbles of any kind. Appears almost flat?

S: Merlot grapes, oak, an acidic sourness akin to lemon, and tons of red wine qualities. Could be almost a Pinot Noir type of aroma as well. Touch of sweetness here too.

T: Big sourness at the front with plenty of grapes and red fruits to complement it. The woody, oak flavors and the malts give this a sturdy backbone and balance out the sweet, sour flavors really well.

M: Carbonation is moderate, not overly done like most Wild Ales but this is far from flat. Not too dry or sweet in the linger either.

Simply put, this was awesome. We had this side-by-side with a fresher 2011 Sang Noir and it completely blew it away. Different aging and fruits, I know, but still.

Opened with friends right after Sang Noir. Beautiful pour again; brownish red body and good head + lace. Tons of cherries, complimentary bourbon.

Sour fruit takes center stage; funky yeast accents the fruit. Mild earthy bitterness combines with the bourbon for a pleasant blend of flavors. Delicious. Mild bourbon coats your mouth for minutes after drinking. Distinctly different from Noir, but slightly below. Still fantastic.

Murky hazy brownish muddy reddish color.

Awesome nose-- sour cherries, raspberries, with bigtime oak and earth notes. Definately some funk in there too-- and not bright sunshiney day hay funk-- a deep ominous scary earthy funk that fucking rocks.

All those notes translate beautifully to the taste. Some what sweet up front that leads into a great sour/tart note at the back end.

The body is quite good too-- good firm carbonation, smooth medium/light body with a solid cheek-puckering sourness.

Really quite good. This is my favorite from Cascade-- aside from Apricot, of course!

App- When it comes down to it, this has a rouge type of color, a little red, a little pink, a little purple. A few staggling bubbles were all that poured.

Smell- Much more dry than I was anticipating. A nice oaky, fruity, tart, tannin note.

Taste- A nice sour beer with that oaky, grape, barrel note. Much like the nose it was a bit dry.

Mouth- A bit of a lighter medium body with a medium carbonation level.

Drink- I was very excited to see this and try some. It was one I tried to trade for but never could land. I liked the cherry aspect very much. A nice dry sour with some layers and some tart flavors.

A; poured a brownish red in color with a thin head that left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: I definitely was able to get a whiff of the pinot nior grapes which was accompanied with a good amount of wine barrel character, a tad of brett, some vinegar notes and a nice aroma of oak.

T: The pinot nior grapes blended quite well with the vinegar wine barrel flavors with good oaky accentss and nice cherry notes that gave it a nice amount of sweetness.

M: the brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, fruity, bretty funky, oaky, and tart finish.

D: this brew was just drinking fantastic and have to say it is one of my favorite blends from the cascade brewery. Good job!!

A: Pours dark brown with a small off-white head. Medium retention, leaves a thin film on top of the beer.

S: Smell is lactic, oaky. Fruity, mainly grapes and other dark fruits.

T: Sharp attack, sour, but not harsh. Some funk, blue cheese, also oak and red wine in there.

M: Good carbonation. Medium bodied.

O: Nice red ale. Got a nice complexity and nice balance between the tartness and oak sweetness.

This beer is quite the gusher; I actually lost a couple of ounces before I could react to the foam over. A careful pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces an almost four-finger thick, amber tinged, tan colored head. As the head slowly subsides with a rocky, crag-riddled surface it leaves some nice fat lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a dark plum color that shows a hazy, rich red hue when it is held up to the light. The aroma is quite vinous and smells of dark fruit; notes of prunes, raisins, lots of black currant, as well as some bright cherry and berry notes (this last reminds me of blackberries, blueberries and mulberries). There is a backdrop of toasty oak in the nose as wellas a touch of toasted grain effect; some tannin, a spicy oak character and a hint of vanillin are noticeable. The nose on this beer is pretty nice, it is well integrated and rich smelling, though I could wish for a touch more complexity.

The beer tastes lightly tart up front. It has a palate fullness and heft to it, which a lively, effervescent carbonation tries to offset; it is actually a bit excessively carbonated, but the body of the beer still stands up to this excess quite well. A nice sourness can almost be bracing, it couples with a tannic bite towards the finish that makes this that much more puckering. Spicy oak and wood flavors play a more prominent role than they did in the nose, but the fruitiness is much more subdued in the flavor; this last is likely because this beer is quite dry tasting, with little residual sugars. Still the fruit notes are noticeable here and remind me of a dry, fruit forward red wine; notes of berry, dark-concentrated plum, tart currant flavors, some washed out cherry skin and even some port-like fruit notes are noticeable here. As the beer warms up the fruit does become more evident though. There is a tart bite from the acidity that is most lactic, but there also seemed to be a rounded acid influence from the fruit character. Especially after the beer settles down (from the initial carbonation level), the texture is lush and structed from the tannic influence, yet it is still quite drinkable; velvet-like and silky seem like apt adjectives for this brew. There is some spice character here as well and a bit of a biting note that is contributed by the rich fruit / malt character (sort of reminiscent of a spicy fruit skin flavor).

I like that this has a nice oak backbone to it; that and the tartness really helps to bring a suave balance to the jam-like, rich fruit character. I paired this beer with some fish tacos for the last 25cl and this brings out a peppery spiciness from the oak as well as more of the wood-like flavors, but what it really does is accentuate the rich fruit character that is in this beer. This is a really nice, rich, complex, layered beer that retains its ample drinkability. A fantastic beer, that I am quite happy to have polished a bottle off of.
