Sang RougeSang Rouge
Notes: Previously called 'Mouton Rouge'...

Sang Rouge is a blend of sour red ales aged in select red wine barrels and oak puncheons for up to 24 months. Highlighting the depth and complexity of our base red ale without the influence of additional fruits or spices, Sang Rouge serves as the foundation of our “Sang” series. This rare project features notes of roasted malts, dried currants, aged red wine and toasted oak

sometimes you get a wild hare and split a 65 dollar bottle of beer with your brother... I know we overpaid, but the liquid here is epic. as good or better than the other sang beers, and aged real well (2013 edition). its a deep and complex blend, the color of red wine with the same intense tannic acidity and full bodied structure, this is as red winey as beer has been in my experience, certainly without adding fruit. surprised how much head is on this for what it is, I like that a lot, especially in wild ale. the sourness stings the nostrils and makes the palate water like crazy, and the first sip does the same thing, as soon as I swallow it my palate waters for another sip, then another, and another. flavors are real complex here, licorice, black cherry, cabernet, raspberry, lemons, tobacco, musky wet oak, vanilla, even cardamom for a second. its layered and well integrated, and the mouthfeel is astonishing. its fuller bodied, insanely dry for how fruity it is, and piled high with lactic acidity fighting with oak mellowness. it also has a certain creaminess to it, never before seen in a wild ale, richness without the sugar. it needs nothing at all to be perfect, this is one of the best wild ales of all time. a very very pleasurable and indeed regal drinking experience. if you find one and you like this sort of thing, you will not regret this bottle.

Random tasting night with kbutler1 finishing with some cascade. Thanks Kevin for the nightcap!

Poured into Lost Abbey stemware.

Pours a light layer of khaki head. Color is a dark robust red, fairly brown.

Aroma: Sour cherries, oak, spices. A good amount of tartness here. Not funky, sour. I like it and am ready to get into this one.

Taste: I get a bit of brett here with some funk going on. A bit of horseblanket here with a hint of medicinal (very light). Sour, tart cherries. A nice tartness with this beer. Oak and spice notes blend in well. It is funky, but the sourness is more dominate and I enjoy that.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, tart, refreshing. Light to medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Ends a bit dry, but fairly clean.

Overall, one of the better wilds from cascade. This one is pretty drinkable. I like how the sourness out-does the funk. A nice offering from cascade.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours red with a solid white head leaving good lace.

S: Cherries, some red apple, nice acid notes.

T: Red malt with oak, good acidity, slightly tannic. Sour pie cherries, just a tasty brew.

M: Medium acidity, some biting carbonation, tart.

O: A really good Flanders style ale. Very straightforward, direct flavours.

Bought at Whole Foods in Irvine. Thanks beerman4!

Pours a dark brown with some red tinges. A light tan head. Smells like oak, cherries, and more than a little similar to New Belgium's La Folie.

Taste is bitingly acidic, but there's some sweet fruit here. Cherries and something else, actually. Kind of a general "berryness." Light acid dances on the tongue. Very refreshing.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Good lively mouthfeel.

A - Clear ruby brown colored with a quickly dissipating off-white head. Very effervescent with lots of lacing.

S - Light lactic sourness. Sweet bready malts. Lite woody oak aroma.

F/M - Nice sour complex lactic sourness. Complex with a nice firm funk. Oaky flavors mix in quite well. Sweet bready malts, slight earthiness. Low bitterness but finishes very clean and dry. Light sour aftertaste. Medium bodied with moderately high prockly carbonation.

D - Good, refreshing and full flavored. Quite complex yet easy to put down.

On tap at Cascade Barrel House, $6 for 8 oz. pour into snifter, 7.2.11.

Almost no head, though a bit of light brown head initially on pour, ultra quick dissipation. Deep dark reddish hue to body, no visible carbonation. Funky nose, a bit of horse blanket, sour pie cherries, a bit of floral hops. Taste is more sour than tart but both are quite present, the acidity was nicely balanced by cherryish sweetness and lengthy barrel aging. Mouthfeel is medium, lip smacking tart finish, little effervescence, some sweetness but not sticky. This is some funky shit, not for the first time sour/wild ale drinker, but certainly one of the best examples of the blender's art. Well done Ron!

Light fizzy head, slight yeast chunked slight clear cola brown color.

Nose nice tart fruit, raisin, malt vinegar, nice sourness, light reddish malt, pretty good.

Taste brings quite a bit of sour, light malt vinegar, nice acid and hint of lactic, hint if reddish malt and brown sugar raisin, tart plum, slight sticky. Finish is drier but light phlemmy, bit more sour malts, acid, and dark fruit, and hint of bready malt.

Mouth is med bodied, almost no carb.

Overall quite nice, good blend of malt vinegar, tartness, fruit, acid, lactic, and hint of dry bready malt finish.

This beer was part of a great tasting that included seven bottled Cascade sours.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is dark fruit with a good mix of tartness. The flavor is oak, tannins and dark fruit. The beer is very dry. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. One of my favorite Cascade sours.
