Notes: Manhattan NW is a blend of sour quad and blond ales aged in bourbon barrels with sour pie cherries and apricot noyaux. A tribute to the classic Manhattan cocktail, this unique sour beer interpretation features flavors of bourbon, maraschino cherries, bitter almond and rich malt backbone.

750ml, caged and corked bottle, the 2014 Project, which sounds a lot like another 'Manhattan' based project in recent history.

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium salmon amber colour, with one rather skinny finger of essentially wispy and fizzy off-white head, which leaves a bit of mitochondrial lace around the glass as things quickly sink away.

It smells of sharply tart cherry pits, grainy and gritty pale malt, edgy white and black pepper, a strong earthy mustiness, some not so subtle Bourbon barrel astringencies - rye-flecked woodiness, mostly - and a touch of unrequited booziness. The taste is big and saucy cherry flesh, some muddled earthy nuttiness, grainy and doughy pale and caramel malt, still edgy mixed pepper dust, further free-range sour fruity notes, some weak Bourbon woodiness (no parsing really required), and a minor impression of alcohol wanting to get in on the scene.

The bubbles are adequate for the basic support job required here, via its simple frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, that is if you are already acclimated to the sour/funky/yeasty side of the spectrum. It finishes trending dry, as the sour fruit, pepper, and bare woodiness tend to skew just that way.

Overall, this is a gross approximation of the titular cocktail - sure, sour cherry and rye whiskey are a good start, however the tight focus on the sour, rather than the bittering offset, kind of puts this one right off the rails. I know that this is a beer, but they chose to go down this thematic path, and Imma gonna follow it right down the veritable fucking rabbit hole. Good, but not really worth the stupidly elevated shelf tag, IMHO.

2011 bottle.

Hazy reddish-brown color into a large wine glass (Prairie 2nd Anniv. because it was handy). Big puff of foam, 2-3 inches of head, simmering down to about 1/2 inch, and finally settling at a thin well-retaining layer; dots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of cherry candy, little bit of cough syrup, lacto-lemon. Taste of sour cherries and dough--cherry pie, basically--lemony acid, yogurt, definite bourbon notes in the finish. Prickly mouthfeel, slightly puckering, medium body, slightly filmy in the mouth. This didn't help my already raging heartburn. Higher ABV surprisingly well-hidden. Very enjoyable overall.

Drank this on 4th of July, prior to the awesome Weidman/Silva parlay card I won! Pours a unique color. Pink, rose etc. . . thin head on it, dissipates very quickly.

Aroma was complex, cherry, berry, apricot, bourbon. Cherry and bourbon most prominent. Lactic tartness as always, all over this one.

Taste throws in some oak, coconut, vanilla on top of the aforementioned aromas that are tasted as well. Continues to develop in complexity and intracacies throughout. The quad base is obliterated. Drinks nowhere near as powerful as it indicates on the label. A chocolate undercurrent develops, probably from the Heaven Hill barrels. It is mildly sour, nowhere near most of their beers, even their other bourbon barrel sours like Vlad and Bourbonic seem to have a little more going for them in the straight up sour department.

A very good beer. Worth $30? Once, yeah. But I won't be stocking up on this one when there are just as good (if not better) options from the same brewery for only $20.

Pours a thin head on a hazy medium straw body.
The aroma is fruity.
The taste is lots of sour fruit... cranberry.
The texture is crisp.
Nice.

A big thanks to Jeff for this one. 2014 vintage. 750ml corked and caged bottle into a Surly teku. Shared with schen9303.

Nose is sweet and tart red fruit, vinegar, Brett funk and a light plastic-iness. Nice but pretty subdued. Beer opens tart cherry and raspberry mixed with an acidic vinegar and a fruity creaminess. More acidity in the finish with pureed cherry skin and pit that creates a very light bitterness. Incredibly sour throughout. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Foamy and slick in the mouth and goes down dry and puckering.

This one is very very very sour with a puckering acidity. Its good but maybe a little much for me.
