During my recent tour of Norfolk my wife and I stopped at A.W. Shucks. We actually passed by it as we were on our way to Bold Mariner Brewing (or was it Smartmouth? both are close, as well as Benchtop - wait! It was Coelacanth, even closer!), but she thought we needed a snack so we turned around.

It was late afternoon/early evening and there were plenty of parking spaces to be had. Inside it was busy, but far from full. We sat at the bar and perused the beer list. There were 18 taps that included a fair amount of locals, and some of the bigger national craft brands. It wasn't impressive to me as I'm quite jaded, but I'm also not blind enough to not recommend it as a fairly good list. I don't remember what we had, which says a fair amount, but I'm pretty sure I had a Smartmouth Alter Ego Saison which is easily found throughout the area - there was nothing on tap that was rare or exclusive or even just beyond the mainstream craft market. And that was OK, I don't really expect that at a restaurant.

Looking around it's a fairly decent looking place, nothing special, but not bad at all, and everything seemed clean, including the bathrooms.

The service was good, and the bartender checked on us quite often, perhaps even a bit too often, but I'd rather have that than ignorance; and I will note that although there were a fair amount of tables occupied in the dining room, we were the only people at the bar.

We decided to just split an oyster po' boy, which turned out to be a bad idea given our history with New Orleans - they make better po' boys in dingy corner stores in NOLA than they do at A.W. Shucks, but whatever, would the average Joe know? I don't think so. And I should note that they didn't skimp on the oysters, it was pretty full of the good stuff! And in all honesty, even though I don't remember the price, I do remember that it wasn't that bad either. And the fries were good. I shouldn't eat fries but I do remember that we almost polished those off! It's basic mid-level restaurant food with a seafood side, and that's all you really need to know. I'd rather go here than Chili's, Applebees, or Red Lobster but it is on the same level, just not as corporate-polished. If we go back, and I suspect we will one day, we'll probably try the crab cakes.

Conclusion, it seems like a nice place to have a simple meal with some good beers, and I'd imagine that even though it's a restaurant the bar itself probably has its own life a little later on in the evening. Probably worth a stop.

I checked this place out on a lead that they carried a good selection of a local brewery (O'connor Brewing) and I want to try some of their beers. Located in the Ghent district of Norfolk, it's a little tough to spot but once you know where it is you are hooked. Raw bar and regular seating as well as a great bar scene this place was great. Very relaxing and inviting staff I spent a few hours enjoying good conversation, good food and great beer. Their selection was amazing. Tons of craft brews in the bottle and a great tap selection. In fact the only non craft beer on tap was bud light. All the others were either from the local brewery or from other craft brewers. Great prices and good food selection I would definately recommend you check this one out.

A small, somewhat cramped and hidden place in Ghent but the locals know it and that's all that counts. Owned by same people who own Tortilla West so prices are same and that goes w/ selection, although Tortilla West seems to have a few more options. The server screwed my food order up but at least she got them to make a new one on the fly and apologized - at least she admitted her error. For quality of food and portion it's a little steep but guess that's a judgment call. As for the beer itself, they rotate some of the bottles they get in so you can find a seasonal/new release (for a price) but mostly the list is basic beer bar fare and is somewhat stagnant. Had a lot of people for the ODU hoops game, though.

Awesome Place on the edge of Ghent.

Servers are always nice and knowledgable about the beers that they have. They usually have a few microbrews on tap. Recently they have consistently had Legend Brown, O'Conner's Red Nun and Green Can, and Bell's 2Hearted Ale.

Food is always exceptional, highly recommend the meatloaf, hushpuppies, mac and cheese, and pretty much everything else on the menu. Daily Catch specials are always delicious and new, with Soup of the Day always a warm addition to any meal.

Open from 11am to 1:30am everyday. Sunday from 11am to 4pm is a brunch, but the regular menu is also served.
