Brewed by:
Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is our annual opportunity to abandon subtlety and replace it with chaos and volatility. For this sixth edition, we combined over a metric ton of grains with heavy hop additions and then dry hopped the beer three times with inordinate quantities of nine hop varieties, just to be ridiculous (ridonkulous?). Intentionally unfiltered, unbalanced, and surprisingly smooth. Reekris!

Can. Poured a rugged orange color. Head was cream colored and fluffy. Aroma was brash and bold. Lots of citrus and a good amount of dank pot. It's a mix of US and Australian hops, if my memory serves me right. Like a skunk, this beer warns you of its potency via its aroma. The flavor was slightly less explosive and consequently more approachable. Still, it was exceedingly hoppy. Juicy citrus, some tropical fruit, green "herby" flavors. Hop dominated, thankfully. Level-headed, pale maltiness. A success. The body was full and the carbonation was uplifting. I am a big Baxter fan and this could be their best yet. Great beer.

Cheers to Bilco for giving me a can

Consumed 12/17/14

A: Pours a golden orange with some honey and some light copper - some chill haze - medium sized, white head that fades to a wispy cap, keeps a small collar, leaves some splotches of lacing

S: Immediately disappointing, as this does not smell like gunpowder (false advertising) - definitely a hop explosion, though, for what it's worth - chaotic hoppy aromas - oily grapefruit rind - syrupy, overly ripe pineapple - fresh green onions - sharp, abrasive pine - very herbal and spicy - earthiness - relatively sweet malts at the base with some very noticeable booze - update: becomes even messier as it warms

T: Very hoppy in a weird way - this is an all-on assault of hops, with flavors bludgeoning your tongue left and right - very, very bitter - straight-up aspirin-like bitterness followed by oily, wet pith - oily, sticky citrus rind - resinous pine needles and a big dose of mint - very herbal, spicy, and earthy - decidedly unclean and raw - alcohol is obvious to the extent that I would not guess this was a mere 9.00% - tropical notes in the aroma are lacking here, but the onion is even more potent in the taste - malts are mostly nonexistent except for some boozy sweetness

M: On the heavy side of medium, very sticky, abrasive, boozy

O: Boom?

This starts off explosive and mildly interesting. The more I drink, and the more it warms up, the more it reveals its flaws. This is a mess. It's a hop bomb, which is not ever a bad thing, but hop profile here is lacking just about every attribute I look for. And did I mention it's beyond boozy?

This is one beer that started out very good, but the medicinal qualities in regards to smell and taste just started compounding for me as I drank more of the can. Just a bit too much alcohol harshness and not enough of the tropical finish the nose suggests at first.

Yikes. I really enjoy the beer that Baxter brews but this thing was just a mess. Too boozy, no hops. Terrible mouthfeel. A complete and utter let down. I think they just amped up Stowaway without regards for subtlety or softness. This was a harsh medicinal drink. Got me drunk, though.

Appearance: Bright slightly burnt orange. Head is white and bubbly. Drops to a small cap and collar with no lacing, Cap disappears completely after a few minutes.

Smell: Bitter pine needle. Malts are very light with a touch of caramelized sweetness. Some cracker and biscuit crumbs. Hops have a ton of peppery spiciness with a massive herbal and slightly floral component. Hits with an oily resin. A touch of fruity esters in the back as well. Pear and pineapple candy. Slightly dank. Alcohol spiciness as well. Smells better as it warms but the pineapple dominates. Hints of peach, grapefruit, and orange.

Taste: Bitter and loaded with herbal spiciness. Hops are slightly leafy on the initial sip but push hard and oily the longer it's sipped. Malts are barely there, offering up a small amount of caramelized malt sweetness. Some sweet biscuity dough and light cracker. Pale malt sweetness as well. A touch of tobacco and aspirin with some hearty mint. Some woody notes as well. A lot of hops and little else. Alcohol on every sip. Artificial pineapple takes over on each sip and lingers. Underripe pear. Slightly vegetal as well...think green onion. So much green onion.

Mouthfeel: Sticky medium body. Moderate carbonation. A touch of backing dryness thanks to the alcohol. Drinks heavier than it is. Sticks to the tongue.

Overall: No need to cross state lines for this one.

It's a bit of a mess. The hop profile is all over the place and never really jives. It's possibly to be unbalanced and delicious. This is just the former.

A: Pours a golden color with a fingers worth of head that fairly quickly fades down to a very thin cap within a minute

S: Citrus and tropical fruits up front along with a hint of pine and earthiness. Malt stands up against the hops a little, but the hops still win out by quite a bit

T: Starts off with the citrus and tropical fruitiness from the hops, followed by some pine notes and very light malt undertone. Again, the hops win out against the malt, and it's even more so in the taste. Moderate bitterness comes through at the start, growing in intensity as it nears the finish. Finishes with more hints of tropical fruits along with a stronger bitterness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A touch oily

O: This brew certainly focuses on the hops, and it does a great job at doing so. The malt does just enough to provide a light balance to the bitterness, while allowing full hop flavor. This makes for a dangerously drinkable 9% hop bomb that you just want more of. Luckily it comes in 16 oz. cans! Definitely pick up a 4-pack or two if you see it around. You won't be disappointed!

I was in The Beer Store (Nashua) today and opted for a 4-pack of this new guy on the block. Came to $12.00 for four 16oz cans. Looks like a date on the bottom says 11.15.14 - I can only assume this was a canning date? Anyhow...

Poured one into a Sammy pint glass.... Bier is bright golden and mostly clear, with just a smidge of haze. Carbo is scattered yet steady, and the head is white, fine and thin. The foam covers things with a tiny layer, and clings mostly to the edges, while also leaving some lacing here and there. Aroma is hop heavy, as if I expected something else! Quite citrussy, with rindy grapefruit and pineapple, and a hint of apricot sweetness. The feel is rather smooth, overall, and the body has just a touch more than medium to it.

Flavor does actually have sweetness present, with apricot and tangerine hitting the palate first. That's followed by a lovely layer of hops covered by a wave of more bitterness. There's some bitter grapefruit and sweeter pineapple, with rindy, resiny, piney action all mixed together. It has a definite, warming, boozy aspect to it as well. Final answer? I rather like this one, and at $12 for 4x 16oz cans? Yeah, what the fuck, Gus!?! Prosit!!
