Brewed by:
Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

L: Pours a nice cloudy copper color with a medium sized thick off white colored head that laces the glass a lot and fades slowly down the glass.
S: Smells of piney, citrus, and earthy hops. This one has a lot of citrus in the aroma.
T: Tastes of a tiny bit of sweet malt and then a big citrus, piney, and earthy hop flavor. It ends a bit bitter.
M: Crisp, fresh, refreshing, a bit bitter, perfect amount of carbonation, lighter bodied than it looks.
D: Overall a nice mix of hops on this. Well worth it, and good beer in a can is always nice!

Pour - tangerine-orange in color, clean and clear with a very rich, very thick and creamy head. Very impressive pour, be it from a can, bottle or on tap.

Aroma - citrus, fresh pine and evergreen needles, orange peel, grapefruit and

Taste - lemony-orange citrus flavors hit the tongue first followed by some malty sweetness and some notes of passionfruit and other tropical fruits. Nice carbonation levels with tiny little bubbles bringing refreshment to your taste buds. A bit dry in the finish which has you dipping your face back in the glass for more. Somehow this beer weighs in at 6.9% ABV, but I don't taste it. I could get into some trouble with a case of these...

Overall - a nice debut IPA from the canning folks in the great state of Maine. As this brewery ages I expect to see this beer mastered and certainly become one of the top IPAs in a very crowded New England brewing scene.

Would I buy more of it? - absolutely. I'll definitely be picking up some more cans of this IPA next time I'm up in Maine.

This beer pours a nice orangish color with a offer white head. The smell is citrusy and floral a really nice hop profile. The flavor follows the hop aromas with very little in the way of malt. The mouhfeel is dry and bitter and overall this is a great ipa

Had this at the brewery and at dinner, and then Lunch when I got home. I liked this better than Lunch, though Lunch gets all the hype. No dissing intended on Maine Beer Co, I'm a fan. More commentary on BA hype....

Good looking golden/amber, medium white head, decent retention, a bit of lacing and moderate activity visible.

Very rich hoppy aroma that comes with significant floral and fruity elements, and a whisp of pine. It hangs on and on, and the sweet malty backbone also comes into play adding depth and complexity. Surprisingly pleasant aroma.

The taste has the same elements coming into play, but it doesn't shine quite as brightly as the smell, probably because dry hopping doesn't add to the flavor the way it does to the nose. But still there are prodigious floral, citrus, peach and mile pine hop influence balancing delicately with the sweet malty base of the beer. The medium bitterness plays well with the other influences and it finishes clean.

Good carbonation level, medium body, gentle warming, and a clean finish that isn't overly dry.

I am impressed! The bountiful floral and fruity hop bouquet in the nose, especially, but also in the flavor were surprising and appreciated. And the body and balance are far more to my liking than the aforementioned, more heavily hyped beer from down the road a spell. Good job Baxter! Keep it up.
