Stowaway I.P.A.Stowaway I.P.A.

Brewed by:
Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

This beer pours a nice orangish color with a offer white head. The smell is citrusy and floral a really nice hop profile. The flavor follows the hop aromas with very little in the way of malt. The mouhfeel is dry and bitter and overall this is a great ipa

Had this at the brewery and at dinner, and then Lunch when I got home. I liked this better than Lunch, though Lunch gets all the hype. No dissing intended on Maine Beer Co, I'm a fan. More commentary on BA hype....

Good looking golden/amber, medium white head, decent retention, a bit of lacing and moderate activity visible.

Very rich hoppy aroma that comes with significant floral and fruity elements, and a whisp of pine. It hangs on and on, and the sweet malty backbone also comes into play adding depth and complexity. Surprisingly pleasant aroma.

The taste has the same elements coming into play, but it doesn't shine quite as brightly as the smell, probably because dry hopping doesn't add to the flavor the way it does to the nose. But still there are prodigious floral, citrus, peach and mile pine hop influence balancing delicately with the sweet malty base of the beer. The medium bitterness plays well with the other influences and it finishes clean.

Good carbonation level, medium body, gentle warming, and a clean finish that isn't overly dry.

I am impressed! The bountiful floral and fruity hop bouquet in the nose, especially, but also in the flavor were surprising and appreciated. And the body and balance are far more to my liking than the aforementioned, more heavily hyped beer from down the road a spell. Good job Baxter! Keep it up.

Big thanks to Drazzamatazz for hooking me up with a 4 pack of this in the Nice Cans III BIF. 12oz Into a Baxter Brewing "can" glass (this thing is awesome!).

A: Pours a nice, crystal clear, orange color with a cream colored head, that foams up to about an inch and sticks around nicely. Head is nice and dense. Large spots of lacing are left behind as the head starts to fade.

S: Big blast of citrus and pine with a nice amount of hop resins, behind that is a fairly large malt backbone consisting of some graininess and a touch of caramel and honey. Just a touch of booze in there. A few yeast esters find their way into the nose as well. Reminds me a bit of Odell's IPA.

T: Nice amount of hop resins, citrus, and caramel. Really a lot going on right up front the tongue gets pulled in a few directions but leans towards the hop side first. Malt profile is sweet and caramelly. A fair amount of resins linger on the tongue for a long time. A little more bitterness would be alright though, bitterness is a touch soapy. Still a nice IPA.

M: Medium body with the perfect amount of carbonation. Finish is fairly dry, but finishes with a lot of flavors on the mouth. Just about right.

O: A good IPA. Very enjoyable. This would be a great tailgating/game watching/sitting outside and relaxing sort of beer. I could drink a ton of this stuff. Not a lot wrong with it at all, just doesn't have those few characteristics that really set it over the top. Very enjoyable.
