Brewed by:
Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

12 oz. can into a pint glass.

Appearance: Beautifully hazy and darkly peach-colored, with a lot of bubbles floating swiftly to the top, leaving nice raindrop lacing and a good ring of lacing around the body of the brew.

Smell: Pungent and sweet, with spiky citrus notes dominating, especially grapefruit and lemon, with some tangerine notes too and mild peach. But the sweetness isn't overpowering. A lot going on here.

Taste: Initially the balance happens very well here, with some marijuana-like flavors from the hops, that go very well with the zest-like orange and lemon going on. Lingering grapefruit, and again, the sweet peach notes come in, but they're working well to make this extremely balanced. Also some husk and grain notes linger long after the finish.

Mouthfeel: Not necessarily velvety, but the carbonation works very well in this more medium-bodied brew. Lingering bubbles, not so much champagne-like, but they serve the purpose to make everything smooth sip after sip.

Drinkability: A pretty awesome surprise. Went to Portland a week ago and picked up a 6-pack on a whim for $8 or $9, and it's definitely worth it. Baxter only does two brews thus far, but i hope they continue to do more. Check this out if you can.

L: Pours a nice cloudy copper color with a medium sized thick off white colored head that laces the glass a lot and fades slowly down the glass.
S: Smells of piney, citrus, and earthy hops. This one has a lot of citrus in the aroma.
T: Tastes of a tiny bit of sweet malt and then a big citrus, piney, and earthy hop flavor. It ends a bit bitter.
M: Crisp, fresh, refreshing, a bit bitter, perfect amount of carbonation, lighter bodied than it looks.
D: Overall a nice mix of hops on this. Well worth it, and good beer in a can is always nice!

Pour - tangerine-orange in color, clean and clear with a very rich, very thick and creamy head. Very impressive pour, be it from a can, bottle or on tap.

Aroma - citrus, fresh pine and evergreen needles, orange peel, grapefruit and

Taste - lemony-orange citrus flavors hit the tongue first followed by some malty sweetness and some notes of passionfruit and other tropical fruits. Nice carbonation levels with tiny little bubbles bringing refreshment to your taste buds. A bit dry in the finish which has you dipping your face back in the glass for more. Somehow this beer weighs in at 6.9% ABV, but I don't taste it. I could get into some trouble with a case of these...

Overall - a nice debut IPA from the canning folks in the great state of Maine. As this brewery ages I expect to see this beer mastered and certainly become one of the top IPAs in a very crowded New England brewing scene.

Would I buy more of it? - absolutely. I'll definitely be picking up some more cans of this IPA next time I'm up in Maine.

This beer pours a nice orangish color with a offer white head. The smell is citrusy and floral a really nice hop profile. The flavor follows the hop aromas with very little in the way of malt. The mouhfeel is dry and bitter and overall this is a great ipa
