Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

A: The beer is somewhat hazy orange amber in color and has lots of small and large sized particulates floating in suspension. It poured with a quarter finger high beige colored head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and lacy rings of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pine resin hops are present in the nose along with notes of citrusy hops.
T: The taste follows the smell and starts out with piney flavors from the hops along with notes of caramel malts and hints of grapefruit. There is a moderate amount of bitterness. The pine lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and surprisingly a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The pine in the finish lends some dryness to the mouthfeel.
O: Despite all of the piney hops, this beer has a pleasant smoothness in the mouthfeel that coats your mouth a little. It has rather bold hop flavors for an IPA, similar to what you would expect from a Double IPA.

From the can it pours an amber and sunset orange looking color with a moderate puffy foam head. The carbonation is visible. As the head dissipates, it leaves a gentle swirl of film on the surface and scattered splashed of lace.
Holding the glass up to the nose, it is initially malt forward. Aromas of silky and sweet caramel and toasted biscuit and crackers pervade. However, soon enough a complex hops bouquet develops, starting with a gentle grapefruit and light hint of tropical fruit. A grassy and pine needle, even peppery, aroma becomes even more prominent, evoking fresh herbs and green forests.
The hops dominance extends to the taste, as notes of grass, pine needle, tobacco, and pepper, render a spicy bitterness that lingers in the finish and is dry. A juicy coating of citrus and caramel sweetness add balance. The crackery malt backbone is also everpresent in an important supporting role to the hops.
Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, hops forward, prickly, bitter and yet accessible. A nice combination of juicy and earthy. The dryness of the palate aids the drink ability. Solid and tasty ipa!
