Brewed by:
Baxter Brewing Co.
Maine, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

Poured from a 12 oz can into an oversized wineglass. "Bootleg 06/25/14" on bottom of can. Single purchased at Craft Beer Cellar (Waterbury, VT).

A: Clear as a bell orange-amber with 1-2 finger, off-white head with good retention and a healthy amount of craggy lacing. (4.25)

S: Orange pine soap is the best descriptor, some floral, a bit of light caramel and breadiness. (3.25)

T: The flavor makes a nice comeback with a solid light-to-medium caramel backing not really yielding but sharing with orange, herbal-honeysuckle, tobacco, and floral hops notes. Pine whacks the palate in the finish, with a big resin blast which is welcome after the malty beginning. Bitterness is medium-to-high, especially in the finish and aftertaste. (3.75)

M: Feel is sticky overall with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty dry despite all the maltiness in the flavor and aroma. (3.5)

O: I liked the whole better than the pieces on this IPA -- I like the strong bitter, resiny finish more than the rest of the beer, and it has some weaknesses, but it is worth a try.

12 oz. can poured into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber with pretty good carbonation and a nice one-finger creamy head. Lacing moderate.

Aroma: Grapefruit, lemon, apricot, and pine are all present along with a solid malty backbone.

Taste: This is a nice, mid-range IPA that brings the hops and malt forward in nearly equal parts. Taste follows the nose, with grapefruit dominating.

Mouthfeel: It's pretty drinkable for a fairly sturdy IPA.

Overall: Nice IPA from this can-loving brewer. The alcohol and hops are a touch beyond sessionable depth for most folks, but it's very approachable. Should please the IPA crowd.

12oz can. Pours a semi translucent copper orange color with a half inch of head. Moderate amount of lacing. The aroma is a mix of citrus and piney hops. Resinous. The taste is much of the same. Piney and resinous with not much of the citrus from the aroma. Bread, caramel, nuts and some light grapefruit notes. Finishes with more of the bitter pine and caramel. The mouthfeel is on the heavier side. Overall, pretty decent IPA I'd grab again.

A: Nice deep amber with a sizeable creamy head. Long lasting retention and noticeable lacing.

S: Pine, caramel, nuts, bitter grapefruit, toffee and spices. This definitely leans towards a bold malt-hop aroma with a musky element.

T: Similar to aroma with caramel, wood, herbal/floral qualities, grapefruit pulp, and spices. An immense bitter finish with a huge presence of both malt and hops.

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Oily with lots of resin. Wonderful stuff.

D: This was a well crafted IPA and l can see this being a regular go-to IPA but I would still place this in the very good not outstanding category.
