Notes / Commercial Description:
As days get shorter and sleeves get longer, Baxter Brewing releases its fall seasonal, Hayride Autumn Ale. A generous portion of two rye malts give the beer a full body, bready flavor, and subtle spiciness; while toasted malts provide a touch of sweetness and a rich, almost reddish hue. New Zealand Pacifica and Pacific Jade hops balance Hayride’s maltiness and suggest notes of oranges and tropical fruit. Finally, we cold-condition the beer on oak, with light additions of ginger, black pepper, and orange peel, bringing out the spiciness of the rye and rounding out the soft sweetness of the beer. Hayride will give a touch of warmth for those cool fall nights, while remaining deliciously drinkable.

A: crystal clear; deep bronze in color; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a splotchy cap; very little lacing;

S: ginger, black pepper, and orange rind; a hint of oak;

T: follows the nose initially, but the oak comes on strong from the middle through the finish; mild bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;

O: nice complex flavor and aroma; the wood gives the impression of a higher ABV;

Poured from a 12oz can n to a dfh snifter

A: a nice slightly browned bet with a finger of slightly tanned head that recedes nicley and leaves a decent lacing.

S: oak, and rye, a nice tropical fruit hop aroma, passion fruit, light mango, perhaps some of that aroma is coming from the orange peel. This brew does not smell overly spicy which is what I was afraid of.

T: very nice blend of rye and trip oak fruit hop deliciousness, the oak adds a nice roundness and I feel like the peppercorn deffinatly comes in on the finish and in the aftertaste... There seems to be a bit of caramel on there.. The only ingredient that I don't really get is the ginger, which is ok with me... A lot going on but it all works very well

M: medium body with a bit of creamyness, moderate carbonation and dry on finish, as mentioned above there is definite pepper in the finish... I like it though .

O: I really enjoyed this beer, this is a great fall rye ipa, nice body and warmth, complexity and balance, defiantly give this one a go.

12oz can @ Duckfat: This one pours a cloudy, amber color. There was a large frothy tan head on it. Almost no lacing. It has a nice nose. Spice, pine and rye notes. The taste is very good. Rye, spice, hint of pine. Perhaps a touch of orange and ginger. A touch bitter. Very Nice!

12 oz. can poured into a Libby craft glass.

Appearance: Pours a muddy, murky reddish brown with a big cream head that sits around forever. Carbonation heavy. Lots of lacing.

Aroma: Rye, pepper, peppercorn, caramel, malts, toast, herbaceousness.

Taste: Pepper and rye bread dominate the flavor. I like it. Nice dry, peppery punch in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Good autumnal depth. Not heavy, not light.

Overall: This is a really nice rye ale from a dependable Maine brewer. Autumn seasonals are full of browns, marzens and pumpkins and it's nice to see a slightly spicy rye in the mix for a change of pace. Good stuff.

Out of the can and into a pint glass:

A: dark red/brown colored body and leaves a three finger white foamy head that must last at least two and a half minutes. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. There is some nice minimal spider web lacing here and there.

S: rye up front with a fair amount of malts combined evenly with the hops.

T: basically the same leaving a slight dry aftertaste.

M: light to medium and leaving a great feel on my tongue (nothing harsh, just right).

O: another great beer by Baxter that I would definitely have again.

This brew shows a murky haze of rusty brown with a stout tan-ish head and goodly gobs of lacing. The aroma offers a malty mulled apple with hints of light lemon hop. It definitely sets the stage for those October days. The flavor brings more bright yeasty bread over the same cider malt with woodsy-leafy characteristics and a dry grass finish. I get some ideas of nutmeg and tea and hints of orange clove. It's medium bodied with delicate but purposeful carbonation that provides a good bit of tongue tingle and refreshment for those football afternoons and brisk autumn winds. Very woodsy, crisp and flavorful. Nice job Baxter!

Appearance: Dark chestnut with light amber hues and a rocky two finger head.

Aroma: Tropical fruit, grapefruit, piney, light notes of caraway seeds. Malty sweetness has a light molasses touch.

Taste: Grapefruit in the front, crisp hop bite in the mouthfeel, rye bread, caramel malts and piney notes. Fruity esters, yeasty notes.

Notes: A very good Rye beer citrus hops with light belgian yeasty notes. Cheers.

A: Pours a cloudy and hazy mahogany color with 2 fingers worth of tan fluffy head

S: Get a nice bit of rye malts along with some spiciness, citrus, and oak

T: Follows the nose with some spicy rye along with a spiciness from the ginger and peppercorns. Also has a very slight citrus note at the very beginning. Finishes off with the oak, earthiness, and light bitterness

M: Medium bodied with soft moderate carbonation

O: This is a nicely complex brew that captures the season well. Perfect for the cooler weather, and as always with this brewery, easy to transport in the canned format

On-tap 10/4/2015 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep coppery red color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized rye malts, fruit and floral hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty malt character up front. Then a strong but not over-powering hops bitterness come in followed by some mild fruit and spice sweetness. There’s a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

One finger bar poured head. Leaves multiple lines of lace. One after each sip. Light brown to dark amber color. Hard to tell but I honk this beer is clear.

Heavily roasted crystal malt sweetness. I also get berry notes.

The taste is far more dry, a bit like a dark lager. No coffee or chocolate. The hop finally shows up in the swallow, becoming strongest in the aftertaste. Dry, nearly rye-like finish. Decent body with an elevated carbonation level. Late in the aftertaste I detect a flavor/smell that reminds me of autumn leaves. I've never tasted this in a beer before. There may also be some pumpkin spices but it is very subtle.

Over all this is a very good beer although I felt the pine like flavor from the hops was a bit too forward and made this brew somewhat off balance. However, the underlying, deep flavors added a complex and likeable beer. The malt came through and added some sweetness. The finish was somewhat bitter (which I like) and left no lingering after taste. I would not make this my every day drink but I will be happy to have this in my refrigerator in the autumn.

Looks like a glass of apple cider with a beery head on top. Hearty skim of retention. Poured into a mighty Pamola can-glass because appropriate glassware rocks my socks. Pretty can.

Bright yellow grapefruity citrus with a gentle oak and honey overtones. Smells "fuzzy," but in a good way.

Very bold grassy citrus hop and rye spice run right over an underlayer of mellow vanilla'ed honey sweet malt Balanced bitter. No caramel, contrary to what the color indicates. This was aged on peppercorns, ginger and orange peel and while I can't pick any of those flavors out it does taste...exotic? There's a lingering dish soap after taste that once I noticed it that flavor quickly became overwhelming.

I really liked the first can. I didn't like the second can (the dish soap aftertaste got to me). I had cans three and four at a BBQ yesterday and those were alright. I gave away can #5 so I guess it's up to the final can in my fridge to determine how I feel about hayride.

A beer of ostentatious vs. mild: bright, vibrant hops vs. mild and mellow oak. Spicy rye vs. subtle honey sweetness. It's a bit messy but I like it. Most of the time.

Baxter Hayride

12oz, canned in October 2012.

Pours a murky reddish brown with a very nice off-white head. Great lacing. If it had a bit more clarity and no floaties, this would be a 4.5. (3.5)

Definitely some orange peel on the nose, a touch of ginger too. All very, very subtle however. Clean and relatively nondescript. (3.5)

Chewy rye malt, solid bitterness and a hoppy, orangey character. A touch piney as well. Reminds me of the bitterness on the Baxter IPA but without that dirty vegetal character. Finishes dry, with a bit of spice. The herb/spice character is subtle, as is the oak. I honestly wouldn't have known this beer were "oaked" unless I read the label. Drinkability is surprisingly high. (4, 4)

I really like how this beer is malty but dry, and the spices don't overpower. Far and away the best Baxter offering I've had. When you get a clean can or pour of Baxter, the beer is solid. (4)

A- An amber-brown beer with a pretty large amount of murky haze pours out of the can into a can-shaped glass. A massive light tan head forms to several fingers in size and has great retention. A large, puffy thick cloud stays along with a big bubbly ring leaving nice coats of lace.

S- Not quite what I expected but I suppose what they list on the can is represented. I get a mix of citrus, brown sugar malts, rye spice and very light malt.

T- Citrus is once again highly present. It seems the dried orange peel lends the citrus and grapefruit hints I get. Ginger is also pretty big here. Rye, brown sugar, cracked grains, raisin, spice and bitterness (spicy, floral, lemon zest hops) make up the rest of the flavor. Oak is extremely subtle here and I didn't notice it in the aroma.

MF- The body is somewhere between light and moderately thick. It has a fairly creamy texture and a medium level of carbonation. A nice, clean bitterness in the finish.

Not what you might expect but it hits the spot. The ginger, citrus and spicy flavors on-top of a amber-brown malt profile make for a nice Autumn ale.

Hayride pours a hazy dark amber with a big, frothy, light tan head on top. The foam fades away slowly leaving behind clumps of lace on the glass.

The aroma is malty with some spicy rye notes mixed in. It's also bready with a touch of ripe fruit.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is creamy, slightly water with mild carbonation. The flavor is malty with tastes of rye, bread, caramel malt and toast. It finishes mildly bitter with some citrus notes. Once gone the rye and citrus bitterness lingers on the palate.

An easy to drink beer with lots of flavor. Very malty.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger off white head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy amber color with a little clarity and bubbles coming up through the glass. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank

Smell: Spicy rye, caramel, toasted malts, spices, and a little fruitiness.

Taste: You get some citrus in there, bitterness, spiciness from the rye, pepper, chewy malts, caramel, and orange.

Mouthfeel: A little smooth, chewy, light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, and a little spicy.

Overall: Pretty solid rye beer that I have enjoyed a bunch this year and last. The can aspect is good for those warm and cool fall days.

L- Burnt amber with a fluffy off-white head and good lacing.

A- Piney hops with a hint of citrus. Ginger is prominent upon the backbone of rye and complimentary orange peel. A bit of caramel.

T- Pine and ginger again, with a wave of rye spice and graham cracker malt.

M- Medium - Creamy mouthfeel with a good amount of carbonation.

O- I realy liked this beer. The rye, ginger, and orange peel work together without overpowering the entire experience. It's pretty dialed in.

Poured from a can into a pint glass.

Appearance: Brown in color, with a very think beige head that lingered for more than 20 minutes, heavy lacing on the glass. A significant amount of carbonation, some debris as well (can condition maybe?)

Smell: Pine and hop notes.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of bitter hop and pine notes, some toasted malt like flavors and subtle citrus.

Overall: One of the better "Autumn" Ales I have had.

Darker shade of orangey chestnut brown in color. Forms a very large off-white colored head that slowly reduces to a thick surface coating. Moderate lacing. Aroma is rye malts, piney hops, and a slight metallic quality. Taste begins with a good dose of toasty caramel malts along with a mild sweetness. A blend of woodsy and piney hops and a fairly appreciable rye spiciness. Full bodied. Appropriate carbonation. Moderate bitterness.
A nice beer. Very autumnal. Appreciate that, while this is a full flavored beer, the oak aging and spices aren't overdone.

Can > Pint Glass

A - Very cloudy dark amber with two fingers of off white head, little patches of lacing, lots of yeast floating around.
S - Pepper, rye, toasted caramel, light herbal scent, biscuits, a hint of smoke.
T - Lots of sweet malt mixed with that peppery rye spice.
M - Semi dry after it lays on your palate for a while, but still very chewy.
O - Its ok, not my favorite beer at all, could benefit from more balance.

Pours a hazy looking amber color, smallish light tan head, fades quickly but leaves a lasting thin cap on top.

Smell has a huge malt backbone, picking up some spicy rye and hop notes, not really picking up the oak though.

Taste is a bit more complex than the aroma unfortunately it's all over the place, what starts out with caramel malt soon is hit with other flavors like ginger, rye pops in the aftertaste along with a spicy hop character, sharp carbonation with a surprisingly soft and full bodied mouthfeel.

Poured from a can into a tumbler pint, the beer is a deep, dark, almost opaque ruby-copper coloring with a tall, frothy, dense, off-white head that starts around an inch and a half and slowly settles into a half an inch that remains for the duration of the brew. Slightly hazed body gives the appearance of opaqueness. Aromas of a malt-bomb. Rich, roasty caramel and nut, with a subtle grainy underlying character. Smells pretty good. Flavors are hop forward, surprisingly, with a resiny and bitter backbone that supports the grainy and malty profile. Tangy and sweet caramel with a roasting characteristic, blended with some pepper spices from the hops. The malt profile is a bit restrained compared to the nose, providing a little more breathing room for the hops presence. Resiny and peppery aftertaste, with a touch of sweetness at the very end. Slick, rich finish, with a clean, slightly drying feel. The body is a bit lighter/watery compared to what I was expecting on the pour, but the flavors are interesting and tasty. Easy to drink.

A-Pours a turbid brown with orange hints. Head is thin and creamy. Very interesting color.

S-Lighter tropical hops. Lightly spice with the rye. Oak is very mellow. Almost hard to pick up. Caramel malt. Nose is of minor intensity. Almost smells like Dr. Pepper.

T-The oak comes out more in the flavor. The rye is not very intense. Hops are milder too. I get some metallic flavors unfortunately. The hops are fruity and even a bit soapy. Well malted.

M-Medium bodied with tingly bubbles. A bit creamy. Goes down easy enough.

O/D-Cool set of flavors to put other for an Autumn brew. May be a bit too ambitious because none of the flavors really stand out. Baxter has some interesting brews and this one fits in with their collection. They just didn't really nail it with this one.

Can from Bert's
Fairly clear reddish amber color with a frothy off white head. Peppery spicy bready aromas with hints of brown sugar. Lots more malt in the flavor; big caramel and brown sugar with hints of chocolate. Peppery spicy pine cuts through the sweetness quite well. Lingering light ginger and drying wood tannin long after each sip. Its a bit different, and beats the hell out of any pumpkin based autumn ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. can. 2014 batch. Sampled on September 1, 2014.

Chestnut-reddish amber pour with a tremendous cream colored head that sits on top for ages.

Aroma of roasted malts and a solid floral, resiny hop sensation.

Medium body.

The taste also has those malts and hops but there is an added minor spice bit. If the label did not say Autumn I would have thought it was a standard pale ale.
