Had on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City, TN.

Arrived with no head whatsoever along with no lacing. Not really a good start.

The aroma had some lightly toasted grain along with just a small amount of piny hops. Some caramel in there too. Not extremely impressive but no real flaws either.

The flavor had licorice and roasted malt up front with caramel and piny hops coming in midway through. There was quite a bit of astringency towards the finish along with a chalky bitterness. Some stickyness on the lips even though the mouthfeel as a whole is quite watery.

Overall, there is quite a bit that could be improved on with this beer. Increased hopping along with a little less attenuation could do wonders for this beer. Right now it is a little all over the place.

Heady, Roasted, Resin, Coffee

Just enough roasted character for a dark beer without going full in on being a porter or stout, great use of American NW hops which really elevates this brew and brings forth a solid drinkability. Hints of caramel, chicory, & unsweetened chocolate in the middle feign a stout like presence. Big and bold with both malt and hop characters pushing for dominance, perhaps that is what a Black IPA is.

The 2014 Tuxedo is a much improved iteration. The initial aroma of dark roast and coffee notes are amazing and in balance with the hop aroma. Hop bitterness is balanced with the dark malt but leaves no doubt this is a black IPA.

This is one of my favorite black ipa's. It's smooth and balanced. I could drink this with a steak, a slice of pizza, or with some cake.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into tulip glass.

A: Very dark brown almost lack with 2 finger head. Leaving very nice lacing.

S: Coffee, cocoa, and pine.

T: Roasty malts with some coffee and chocolate notes. Earthy undertones with pine and other hops. Nice balance.

M: Medium body and nicely carbonated. A bit dry in the finish.

O: Good Black IPA. On par with several of the others that I have tried...

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, some roasted malts. Taste is hoppy, bitter, some roasted malts, a touch of coffee. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

22 oz. bottle served in a tulip glass. Pours dark brown with a reddish hue, a decent sized foamy tan head, good lacing (poured fine, no abundance of foam). Aroma is caramel, a little bit of coffee, citrus, pine and slightly earthy hops. Flavor is slightly roasted, coffee, a hint of cocoa, pine and grassy hops. Mouthfeel is medium, astringent, and dry finish. Good beer, nice balance.

Smells like a mixture of coffee and pine. No citrus whatsoever.
Dark purple color with a 1.5 finger head that quickly went away.
Not a super complex black ipa.
Had a dry quality but not offputting.
Solid after dinner or before bed ipa.
Great example of a local black ipa.
