Pours a one-finger khaki head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Nearly black color, reddish brown highlights. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Hint of chocolate nose and flavor is burnt chocolate malt. Strong, bitter lingering aftertaste. $1.95 for a 12oz bottle from Bert's Better Beers Hooksett, NH.

From the 12 oz bottle into a snifter, pours very dark brown with a small tan head that doesn't leave a lot of lacing. Very stout like aroma, lots of grain and malt. Flavor starts a little sweet, punch of roasted malt, finishes dry, grainy, and bitter. Lighter bodied and prickly carbonation. Not sure what they were going for here but it falls a bit short. No hops and it's too grainy.

A good example for the style. Black ales don't get a lot of love on this site in my opinion but this one is very representative of what the style should be. A nice dark roast flavor, with a slight bitter finish to balance out the sweetness of the malt. Overall, a very enjoyable beer.

Gave it another chance. Not sure if the first was bad for some reason or if was because I tried it at a little higher temp but this one was much better. One of the few beers I actually like at a little warmer.

Pours a clear, very dark brown (black until you shine a light into it) with ruby hints when held to the light, producing barely 2 fingers of foamy, somewhat lived, mocha head that recedes to a collar ring & thin island cap leaving a pasty wash of thin lacing. Aroma is citrus & floral with roast & chocolate with a hint of toffee. The nose has a very reserved hop profile. Taste is citrus hoppy-roast, semisweet chocolate, toffee & burnt malts producing a bitter/burnt, chocolate malt aftertaste. There is a plastic/phenolic presence in the finish that I have have noticed this in other black IPAs. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation, oily & slick with a little prickle in the dry finish.
