Runabout Red Ale is a classic! Our Red Ale has a malty sweet taste that comes from 3 different types of caramel malt. It is a clean, well-balanced beer that started as seasonal ale that we only brewed from March until July. It was so popular with our regulars that we started brewing it year round in 2002. Our red ale is made with only two hop additions to the kettle as opposed to three in most of our other brews and the malt character shows this. Please enjoy our staff favorite!

Has a strong butyric acid taste. A charitable interpretation of that sentence is that it has a funky twang along the lines of very strong cheese; an uncharitable interpretation would be "stomach acid and partially digested food." This brewery is usually very good, and I'm frankly rooting for the handful of New England breweries who don't have political crap all over their sites and can artwork. But either something's wrong with the batch I bought or this needs work.

Had as a pour at the Portland location. Had a thin head that left a bit of lacy white foam on the sides of the glass. Color was rust-red with a moderate degree of opaqueness. Scent and taste were both malty up front with a bit of hop notes on either side. I found myself desiring the beer to have either more maltiness or more hoppiness in both taste and smell and found the end result was a beer that hewed too close to the middle of both flavor profiles to have either really jump out.

Bottle. Clear amber with a thin head.
Sweet caramel malt and hops. Light leaf and grain.
Mild malt flavour. Leaning towards sweetness.
Medium body. Light carbonation.
A reasonably refined red ale.
