Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Runabout Red Ale is a classic! Our Red Ale has a malty sweet taste that comes from 3 different types of caramel malt. It is a clean, well-balanced beer that started as seasonal ale that we only brewed from March until July. It was so popular with our regulars that we started brewing it year round in 2002. Our red ale is made with only two hop additions to the kettle as opposed to three in most of our other brews and the malt character shows this. Please enjoy our staff favorite!

I had this at a restaurant in Eastport on tap. Not much head, but had a nice red color and the smell was malty. Taste was mild sweet with no bitterness. There was no lingering aftertaste other than malt. A very drinkable beer. I recommended it to several people in our party and they all enjoyed it. I love red beers for some reason - this one is a keeper.

On tap at Sebago. Pours red with fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of some hops, caramel malt and red fruit. Body is medium and crisp. Earthy hops, caramel malt and ripe fruit nicely balanced on the pallet. Finish is long and earthy. Overall it is nice session brew.

I'm partial to Red's and this is probably my favorite.
Look: Pours a beautiful red brown with carbonation clinging to the glass and a moderate bubbly off white head
Smell: Slightly malty and sweet on a background of piney hops
Taste: Crystal and caramel malt prevails without becoming to sweet, a light hop bitterness balances and compliments the malts
Feel: Moderate carbonation, crisp and clean
Overall: A wonderful red, malt forward with a nice balance of hops, light crisp and refreshing. Love this beer chilled down on a summer day.

A real nice find while walking around Portland, pours a nice deeper shade of red with a light but sticky head, aroma was malty and lightly toasted.Real good flavor to this red lightly sweet with a nice toasted malt flavor that lingers very well, not heavy just the right body feel and real easy to drink.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Reddish amber with a thin off white head.

Smell: Malts, hops and some grassy notes too.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of bitter malts and mild hops.

Overall: Not bad for a red ale.

Smells of malt: sugary, slightly fruity, perhaps even flowery.

The malt continues on the tongue, though here the sugars and fruits are dampened considerably from how they were presented on the nose. Primary malt flavors include caramels, dark brown sugars, perhaps a hint of vanilla, and at the end, a strong toasted grain taste lingers on the tongue, begging for another sip. What is surprising, given the initial scent, is the level of hops: while they're not present in IPA strength, they certainly give the ale a pleasant bitterness to offset the sugars, and pervade the palate with a lovely grapefruit-like taste.

The end result is a well-balanced and flavorful ale that contains a little something for everyone: pleasant sugary notes as well as light bitters. While none of the flavors are necessarily as distinct and strong as in, say, an IPA, a white Belgian, or a barleywine, there are shades of each in here, and the result is a very drinkable and accessible beer.

This was interesting.

Smooth, hoppy with a bitter finish this ale pours into a glass a light amber color. With a nice head, this beer follows suite of a lot of American Amber of Red Ales.

I liked the hoppy finish, it reminded me of a Red IPA.

I would buy this again.

Pours a great orange amber with a giant tan foamy head that leaves great lacing. An impressive looking brew. The smell is a strong mix of sweet roasted malt and nuts. The taste is chewy with nuts and full of roasted malt. A very good tasting beer. The m/f is light with all flavors mixing very well. This beer and brewery are one of Maines finest treasures. Cheers.

Bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: Lighter amber, and fairly clear. Not a lot of retention or bubbles around. Decent ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Some sweet malt aromas along with grain and husk wafts. As it warms, some citrus makes itself apparent.

Taste: Nice balance between darker malts, some chocolate, and lingering husk flavors, all amidst some decent fruitiness and balanced hops by the end.

Mouthfeel: Lighter to medium-bodied, but a good crisp nature to the brew by the end. At first it may seem slightly watery, but then the carbonation does its work and rounds everything off.

Drinkability: A good and solid Red that I would go to again. Definitely a nice session before the summer, and probably one even better for the fall.

A- Poured into an imperial pint glass, this one is a bright copper/red, almost the same exact color as the label. A small white head fades away quickly.
S- Malt forward with some mild hop aroma. Lots of sweet candy smell, almost like twizzlers.
T- Again a very malt forward beer, but with much more hop flavor then was in the smell. Hops are fruity with a decent bite. Again, the red rope licorice brings itself to the front of the flavor.
M- Low carbonation and a medium body. Finishes a little on the sweet side.
D- I really like red ales and this one does not disappoint. Nothing earth shattering, but a great example of the style. Definitely a good session beer.
