We aged our stout in four freshly emptied charred oak bourbon barrels for over four months. Next we carefully blended it with fresh stout to balance the character of the barrel with the boldly familiar flavor of Lake Trout Stout.

22oz. bottle served in a Spiegelau tulip. Pours an inky black with a creamy, quarter-inch, khaki-colored head that settles into a broken slick. Spots and swaths of lacing are revealed during the tasting. Nose expresses a hint of oxidation, milk chocolate, vinous notes towards the back and perhaps a kiss of ethanol. Taste is a bit chalky and watered down - really no traces of the barrel present in the flavor profile. Primary character is baker's chocolate, followed by some roast. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with a mild carbonation and a trace of acidity. Overall - meh. Why barrel-age a beer and impart no character. Swing and a miss.

Drinking a bottle thats been aged for at least a year
Pours a pitch black body with the slightest mahogany highlights. Head is 3 fingers and chocolate milk colored. Lacing is pretty awesome and head remained present throughout
Smell is of charred oak, sweet vanilla, molasses, and chocolate syrup. Bourbon is very light but alcohol scent is potent for a 6% abc beer. Hops are non existent.
Taste is of burnt, biscuity, chocolate malt, semisweet dark chocolate, and charred oak. Hops are slightly present and bourbon contributes some alcohol flavor.
Mouthfeel is somewhat light for this style but the head adds to the fullness of the beer. Carbonation is a little higher than most stouts.
Overall this beer was pretty tasty. Very drinkable, yet flavorful aged stout. If only there was a bit more bourbon flavor present this beer would be in my top ten. Glad that I received it in a BIF, otherwise I probably would have never heard of it.

Picked up a bomber on a recent beer run. I liked Lake Trout, so how could I not try it BA? Pours a dark brown coloring, with only the slightest of chestnut highlights around the surface with direct light on it. Pours smoothly, with a thin, light, filmy, light-tan colored head. Aromas of smooth cream, bitter roasted coffee, and a woody characteristic at the end that is slightly charred. Good balance on the aromas. Flavors are a little more charred, and with the roast coffee characteristic this gives an initial bitterness with a slight campfire flare. Cream profile is muddled in, and helps to keep the beer a little balanced and a little rich. Very subtle blend of earthy and woody characteristics at the end of the palate. Smooth and light in body, the beer has a roasty and bitter aftertaste, with hints of dark chocolate coming through. Very smooth, clean finish. Very decent brew, and a tasty spin-off from the Lake Trout Stout.

Appears to have a beautiful dark brown body with a half-point off for a ridiculously oversized, even cakelike, tan head. I started to wonder if there was a bit of an infection, but it seems to be OK, judging by the ...

...flavor from the barrel. Some oak and a little vanilla from the bourbon. The chocolate bitterness shows up again, but not much at all of dark fruits or molasses, or anything much more intense. Not too surprising judging by the ABV. Still, it's a smooth, tasty and modest brew, that description extends even to the...

...overall a decent, well-made and drinkable american stout. barrel-aging adds very little here, but it is certainly not over done. Enjoyable.
