One of the best.
Proper pour into pint pub glass produces 2 finger head which soon dissipates to thin pancake that remains leaving delicate lacing down the sides of the glass. Flavors of raisins, plums, prunes, cider, and cherry chocolate. Perfect mouth-feel. Love the aftertaste. Alter the serving temperature a bit to discover different flavors. Experiment a bit. It's worth it.

A: crystal clear; a little lighter than cola brown; ruby highlights visible throughout; 1 finger light tan head that receded quickly to a thin collar; very little lacing;

S: sweet malt dominates up front; oak, vanilla, and tobacco come in shortly after;

T: vanilla for a moment, then a ton of caramel; toward the end, some tobacco; finish is mildly bitter with a little vanilla, caramel, and tobacco;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: complex flavors and aromas; very enjoyable;

Really surprised on this one. Very nice English style brew, in fact, one of the best I've had from the island. My only complaint on this is the lack of complexity. Especially compared to their Jacobite.

500ml bottle served in a tulip. Pours a translucent mahogany hue with a fizzy, off-white head that quickly dissipates towards the shoulders - no lacing on this one. Nose expresses vinous notes, yeast and a hint of cocoa towards the back. Taste is somewhat dull and flat - vinous notes remain; however, there's also an unleavened bread quality and a kiss of something herbal - no oak here. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a carbonation just shy of prickly and a semi-dry finish. Overall, a bit underwhelming for a beer considered to be a style archetype.

Poured into tulip glass. It pours a dark cola with a pretty, ruby hue when held to the light, with a foamy, one-finger ecru-colored head and extensive lacing. It's a very pretty pour. It smells of earthy peat, dark chocolate, tobacco smoke, dark fruit, and spices that I can't quite identify. The taste, as might be expected, is oaky but it is also very dry. I'm not tasting the chocolate that I smelled and the dark fruit is fairly subdued although it becomes more noticeable as the ale warms in the glass. It has a very earthy, smoky taste. Although I don't discern any hops, it is dry and has a slightly bitter finish. This ale is medium-bodied and light in carbonation. I didn't notice the alcohol despite the moderate ABV of 7.2% Overall, I enjoyed this ale: it has a complex, but pleasing blend of flavors and it would pare well with a hearty meal before a fire in a Scottish pub.

Cola and bubblegum in the aroma. Fruity and floral. Interesting herbal minty note. Milk chocolate and toasted bread. No hop aroma...maybe a bit earthy herbal.

Slightly hazy cola brown with amber highlights. Small thin off white head. Poor retention and lacing.

Sweet dark fruits and earth. Cola and herbs. A bit of cardamom. Rich and complex. Surprisingly dry finish. Just a touch of bitterness to balance.

Medium light body and low carbonation. Rich and full.

Hearty and complex but still balanced.
